Kovalchuk was good in New Jersey. He didn't retire because of low-production. He was one of the leading scorers. He helped the team clinch a very unlikely SC Finals berth in 2012. He just felt homesick and the Devils wanted to get rid of the horribly long contract, because Parise had left the team, Brodeur was retiring and it was triggering a rebuild. Still a shitty contract, but he played well.

I'm wondering about Barry Zito's contract with the SF Giants counts. 7 years, $126m, and he was terrible for all but one of those years. However, the Giants wouldn't have made the playoffs in 2012 without him, and he was instrumental in the elimination NLCS postseason game and outpitched Verlander in World Series Game 1. It may still have been an insane contract, but maybe it was worth it for the 2012 championship.

Great list 1-3 are PREFECT! Poor Devils...they are screwed for years to come because of the contract and the retirement. Shame on you Kovalchuk, even as a Rangers fan I hate him for what he did to an entire organization that showed such good faith to him. Islander and Yankee were just plain old stupid. Wade Redden didn't crack the list but I was glad to see him in the HMs. When he was sent down to the minors he DID help a lot of the young rangers defensemen learn their game.
@AprehamLincoln9 жыл бұрын
Where the NHL is concerned, some others should be mentioned. Alexander Daigle's contract is the reason there is a limit to how much rookies can make now. Bobby Holik's contract might be the greatest catalyst for the 05 lockout and introduction of a salary cap. Mike Richards and Vincent Lecavalier both got absurd deals that were highly publicized when they were given the boot from their respective teams. Of course, where Yashin is concerned, it should be noted that he was one of the team's highest paid players a few years ago despite being gone for nearly a decade.

StlOutdoors I'll explain it more thoroughly for you: Michael Jordan retired from the NBA to pursue a career in baseball. He was absolutely awful at baseball and soon went back to the NBA. So when they say "He could've been the Michael Jordan of baseball", it's a bit awkward because MJ DID play baseball and he was tremendously bad at it. So "the MJ of baseball" isn't necessarily the compliment they might have intended it to be.

Johan Franzen the Detroit Red Wings had a choice between him and Hossa. They signed him to a 10 year deal in the first year he had a concussion and has post concussion syndrome since. Meanwhile Hossa has won 3 Stanley Cups in Chicago.

In 2015 at the ripe age of 39-40, Arod played in 151 games, hit 31 HR's, had 131hits, and batted .250. He was well worth the 22 million he was paid. His contract is not "insane," per baseball standards.

Soriano's contract with the Cubs was freaking BRUTAL. The dude didn't put up ANY decent numbers for those long, laborious 7 years.
@KibblezanBitz9 жыл бұрын
DiPietro did not earn that contract. He had a good first year under the contract, but hadn't done anything prior to signing it to warrant that kind of cash and term. The crazy thing is that he played more games in 2007/08 than he did in the five seasons after it. Thankfully, the Isles, buyout monies aside, have gotten past all that and are actually borderline contenders this season. Also, David Clarkson's contract with the Leafs should have been an honourable mention.

That dude who knocked out Kimbo Slice just signed a pro wrestling deal. I always used to wonder if he and Kimbo threw that one fight but it's clear today that he really just knocked out an inexperienced fighter.

Gilbert Arenas was a stud who was averaging 29 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals between 2005-2007. It's pretty unfair to label his contact terrible when it simply reflected his on court performances (prior to injuries and the infamous gun incident etc.)

The whole reason that LA Galaxies bought Beckham was because they knew he sells, that is it. It was clear he was on his way out before they bought him. The man was the most famous 'sports celebrity' in the world, I would wager he still is, I would say more people know him than any other 'sports celebrity'. From what I remember, Japan loved him.

You could do an entire list with just the Yankees since 2000. Jamey Wright, I think, got like $40 million and only pitched, like, 5 innings for them.
@Noahman4449 жыл бұрын
Putting Beckham on this list is a bit harsh considering he brought mass attention to the LA Galaxy and also the MLS by leading the the way for top quality players (though on the wrong side of 30) to come to the MLS. Not to mention him and Donovan won them an mls cup

Albert haynesworth 100 million 7 year deal for the Washington redskins should be top 5. The deal was expected to pay Haynesworth $32 million in the first 13 months, included $41 million guaranteed, and could have reached $115 million if all incentives were met. Only appeared in 20 games before being released.

Idk...the A.Rod contract was bad. But the steroid suspicion was after the contract. What made the Aeranas contract so bad was he was injured that summer before the contract was signed, then a few days later he was out for the season with serious knee injury.
@haydn17089 жыл бұрын
Wait so you say that "soccer" transfers won't be counted (for whatever reason) but then include Beckham? Are you sure you just can't be bothered looking into any other leagues besides the MLS? Or maybe you don't understand football, I don't understand this list at all
@jojag59 жыл бұрын
+Haydn xo They were only interested in players who only had a contract. This is not a list about high transfer fees, which are different from contracts.

Hey Watchmojo, Want to do some groundbreaking reporting? How about you look at the profits of the team owners? Most of these guys contribute nothing to the sport aside from writing large paychecks. Yet, they get to pocket large sums off of the backs of others. What other business allows a person to receive large, [almost-] guaranteed profits without any skill/knowledge/contribution to the business?

2 points. as a Phillies fan, I think the muts' bobby bonilla deal was and is great, I love bringing it up every time some ignorant mut fan tries to run down our deal with Ryan Howard. we aren't paying Howard anymore, the muts have 20 more years of bonilla. (and Ryan Howard was better and way more productive than the overrated bonilla ever was.second, the A-Rod deal was a typical Steinbrenner deal. in the late 90's the yuckees were a dynasty. why? because of a foundation built through their minor league system. a foundation of players drafted while George Steinbrenner was suspended from operations. (look it up). after winning several championships, Steinbrenner switched from foundation building which leads to championships to signing free agents superstars. while winning multiple world series with players like scott brosius, the championship run dried up because players like A-Rod were not championship material. now, anyone can argue this point, but look at the list of world series champions, and the yuckees' rosters for the last 20 years. as stated, i'm a Phillies fan, and we made the same mistake. we built through th eminors and built a world champion (2008). our new GM in 2009 decided to start going the free agent superstar route instead of foundation building and a team that should have contended and still be in contention becamse a laughing stock.
