Went to a Mexican restaurant in Gadsden, Al last month. I think it was Las Brisas, off of Broad Street, close to the theatre down town. I was tired, had traveled from Atlanta Airport and really just wanted to grab a bite and relax at my location. First the nice waitress shows me to a dirty table at the back, while she placed the people that came in after first to the clean table up front. I said I’ll just take a Togo order so she took my order and said I can pay up front. Now I’m back standing where the man at the counter didn’t take my order before the young lady came to assist. After taking care of a customer he goes to walk off. I said excuse me, I would like to pay for my order. He kinda rudely said, I’ll be right with you, not even looking in my face and walked to the back to the kitchen. I didn’t realize at first that I was the only person of color in there, why would I, I just needed a bite to eat. I kindly walked out of the restaurant. I don’t patronize with those that don’t want me to. No harm no foul. Now that’s nice special order I made was on them😌

This video truly confirms why I refuse to live in the south especially AL & MS. My dad ran away from Greenville, AL as a young child because of this. He told me no matter how old you are, he'd still be considered a 'boy'. We were raised in FL and he never looked back. I've visited a salon downtown with my aunt and didn't experience any issues in the area at the time But I wish my relatives would leave there but after living there for so long they are conditioned to the environment...smh. Thank you for this video. I have quite a good amount of relatives throughout AL & this is a major concern. Hopefully this video will convince my nephew to reconsider attending college in Montgomery this year.

I and a girlfriend hitched from Upstate New York to New Orleans in the late 70's. Met all kinds of people, got all kinds of rides. Everyone was wonderful. Especially in Alabama, we stayed a week with some people we met who owned a cafe in Birmingham and kept a marijuana grow on their home property. I'm saying this because I have never in 67 years, seen people so hateful towards each other. I blame trump for the atmosphere of fear and hostility. It's like a disease that's infected the country. He's poison.

I live in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and people believe that Northern states are not racist, but that is so far from the truth. I just found out last week that Minneapolis literally has a law where there are some houses in some neighborhoods that cannot be sold two black families, and even though this is still a law to this day, when a family who is of color, especially a black family, goes to buy a house or wants to buy a house in these prestigious neighborhoods they have to get another form of document to eradicate that law so that the family can buy that house and close on that house. This is a real thing that I was told by Realtor And it is very sad. In addition to that Wisconsin is on another state top 10 list for being extremely racist so it’s like just because slavery did not exist in the north does not by any means equal that people in the north or not races in fact it in a way worse because they do it on the slick in on the sly they have this Minnesota. Thank you for sharing your experiences in the south. As a female in Construction, I face the racism in the form of mysogeny. I grew up on Tampa, Fl and was subjected to the discrimination in a more subtle fashion. I was always given busy work and passed over for opportunities. I soon learned to create my own opportunities and the guys felt entitled to steel them from me. That caused lots of conflicts. I relocated to Atl Ga for a job opportunity and found that Georgia also had the discrimination against women engineers and in Construction and didn’t even feel the need to hide it. They are in- your - face nasty! And not everyone feels that way however, the mysogenist get control over the others and force them to also be nasty to me or they will get repercussions. I have developed a habit that I will not engage with anyone that cannot speak to me in a professional manner. I get my work done but I will not let them disturb my peace. Its not easy but I like where I live in the mountains.

Hi Bárbara, I hear you sis. I was in an exclusively male working environment as a water inspector for the city. While not outwardly hostile, I would catch little phrases and thing's that showed me I wasn't welcome. But when they found out I came in making more money than some of them-- It got worse. This is absolutely true about Cullman. I have relatives there and have been there multiple times growing up. And some of it is so slight, so insidious, you almost blink and you miss it. Like someone making a big to-do about a Black family moving in closeby, or realizing that you've spent an entire day in town and not run into one POC. I'm white but my mom worries each time we go back that someone will pick up on the fact I'm queer, and we'd run into a whole other level of bigotry then. It's a damn shame the place is like that, too, because it's around some truly gorgeous places and like you said, if you look just so, the people treat you marvelously. I am from Baltimore MD and unfortunately we moved to AL. I absolutely hate it my family hates it and we would do almost anything to leave. I hate that my son has to grow up here (all of us are white). I absolutely loved Baltimore I loved the diversity and yes there were bad things about Baltimore. However the education here in Alabama blows and the way these other children act (based on things my son has told me) as well as things I have seen it just blows my mind. Also the way these men speak (based on what my husband has told me from work) it shows the lack of education the whites here have and how they think black and other races are so different they aren't. The Latino people here work so hard and I haven't had a bad experience but the things these people say about them are just flat out wrong and lies. My experience was totally different. I'm white and grew up in Los Angeles. The blacks hated me and called me names all the time. The Latino's were for the most part pretty cool. I married my Latina neighbor. I literally had to fight all the time, not my choice but one time I had to fight for my life and the life of my family. I sadly had to take a life. I moved to Arkansas and worked a lot in construction in Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi. Everyone was pretty cool and we had every ethnic group working together. We would visit each other after work and drink beers together. They became like family. To this day, If I walk through a neighborhood like Knickerson Gardens or a city like Compton, I'm gonna be on the news and you'll be reading my obituary. I can guarantee the Pork & Bean neighborhood in Florida would never welcome me.

I was born and raised in a small town in Tennessee in 1963. As with most modern- day laws being what they are, those laws were not as stringent back then. Racism was not watered- down or hidden during my upbringing, but as long as you minded your own business and stayed on your side of town, things were tolerable. Now, some 50 years later, the hate has reared its ugly head with a vengence! It's even more widespread and vicious than I remembered as a child! Did anyone besides just me notice an uprising in racial disparities between 2018 and the present? I wonder why?

Where I live in Illinois I do not see hardly any, I live above a black family and there are white ppl on my left side, there are Spanish ppl that live across the street, and we all talk and like each other, I have NEVER experienced racism until I moved to Arkansas (a red state) and I would constantly hear them use the N word and say they would never let any black people live in our city! I have a friend from the Caribbean.. Sadly he and his family were turned away because of their skin color, from a restaurant in Daytona Beach, right there on the main boulevard! I didn’t think that kind of thing existed in a big touristy city like that. Another place where I saw racism was in Marshall, Virginia. A big sign on the outside of a restaurant said “whites only.” I am just appalled to see this kind of thing going on today! I lived in Hawaii during the 50s. Those were the best years of my life because everyone got along. There was no thing like racism there at the time. When I came back to the states in the 60s we drove across the southern part of the country to our new home in Virginia. There were signs of racism throughout the entire trip, a big change from Hawaii. And now it is being used to divide us. Why can’t we leave the past now, learn from it, and move forward. Make it a better country where we all work together to that end? It does not have to be this way today, and we must put a stop to it!

Was this restaurant in a shack down a dead end dirt road in an all white Appalachian hollow? Even then I doubt it would last all that long... Anywhere else a restaurant with a Whites only sign in a restaurant window today would very quickly lead to big trouble for that restaurant, no doubt. It was either some freak looking for trouble which they almost surely found(!), perhaps some kind of stupid prank, or else you are just lying. Yeah this makes me seriously doubt your other statement about the black couple being turned away due to race. It may have been at least partly so to something else, but in some places restaurant discrimination is still a thing. I don't doubt that as I have seen it myself, but I none the less now have very serious reason to doubt the truthfulness of your story!

@@fazbell I don't remember exactly when but it around 2017 when the democrats and republicans could no longer agree on much. I wish I had gotten a picture for proof, but it made all the newspapers around there. Now it's all hushed up. There were lawsuits and I believe the owner countered and said he could serve anyone he wanted. Eventually the restaurant was closed and I don't know what happened to the owners. The whole incident lasted about a week.

I really wish I had the means to show SC in this light. I've known other places in the south were bad but your video and all the comments are absolutely the mirror of what my family has been through here in South Carolina. I don't allow my children to come back after they grow up. Because of health issues and the expenses behind them and the Hassel of changing doctors I'm not able to leave yet but in the next 2 yrs this suck hole will not have me anymore. I'll be stable enough to leave and my youngest daughter and I will not have to hear how great SC is from ppl around us that don't look like us. While thier enjoying visiting "The Slave Market" A full 10 blocks of reminders,(tourist attractions)stone blocks(selling blocks) Cobble lane( Cobble lame literally the place where the weak slaves were beaten to death..the houses on the battery where we were made to work. The Courthouse where our identities were changed and if that's not enough The church where Dillan Roof took the life of our family members after they befriended him,fed him and gave him a place to worship. Then the police took an uncuffed dilan(after shooting up a church! to eat at and after (uncuffed to the courthouse jail not the rat hole they usually take criminals in county to wait on transport. My friends and family that are here are slowly working our way out. This expensive Heck hole is one of the birth places of hate and horrible past and the present(my children have memories) creators of what racism was born to be and no where to live . My mother and father got stationed here in the 80"s and until we got older I didn't understand why my father refused to leave. He told us never give in to hate. Now I realize this fight will never end because now they Beat us on Paper and less in the streets so I'll literally never be able to be whole.if I stay here. Sad😢 I can only wish for better than here because my fight as a black person will always be here just hopefully not as bad as this place was. So sad.

My youngest daughter was planning on moving to SC from Puerto Rico with her husband. He saw a job opportunity and she has always wanted to move to the states for the same reason and so when she asked what I thought I said yes immediatelly. Knowing the kind of person she is, an amazing young lady, educated, decent, responsible I saw no problem with that. Then I started searching for info related to that area and I changed my mind. I was so scared for her and called her back a couple of days later and told her how I felt. Fortunately, they had already changed their minds about the trip and so I felt better. They started a dog grooming business and that's what they're doing and it's going good thanks God..

As a minority here our business tax isn't the same. Where they let us have a business is regulated (you can tell by the business owner's in the areas that were once forbidden as early as 1985 for us to have one or live) . My best friend is Caucasian and her husband and I have literally had to stop her from fighting when I'm treated unfairly here. In restaurants,gym,even a parking area in what they call downtown Charleston an attendant looked over me to her and asked if she wanted to park with them as if my car didn't belong to me.. it's to the point now it's crazy to be here. I’m a fair complexion Hispanic and have this thick country accent. We were passing by Mississippi heading to Florida. I was traveling with my ex-wife, sister-in-law and other friends that are white, any way we stopped at a store to fuel up and buy some snacks. The lady and gentlemen at the counter were super friendly we were talking it up while my friend was pumping gas. When a Mexican guy walked in looking for the restroom and I spoke Spanish and told him where it was. OMG😂 you should have seen the way their facial expressions changed in a instant. At that moment the friendly banter was over and the short cut communication started. When my friend came in and the rest of the people in my group was ready to pay the lady at the counter wouldn’t talk to me she just talked to my ex wife. I didn’t care, I didn’t feel bad or didn’t feel anything at all. My ex and the rest of the in-laws and friends were extremely apologetic after that. But I was like hey just stop apologizing for something that y’all didn’t do. 😂unless y’all feel the same way then my brown ass is in big trouble😂. It was just dumb how ignorant some people are. That way as my very first experience with racism.

The year I purchased my home I had a cross burning while I was at work and my oldest son was watching his little sister . When I was 4 living off Fordham rd Decatur Ave . Same thing we had a private house and a mob related gang was going to throw Molotov cocktails in our windows because they wanted us out the neighborhood as they wanted to burn tenement buildings across the street for insurance . I'm a Hispanic from TN, and from what I've come to believe is that the modern South isn't so much racist as much as it is tribal, and is suspicious of _all_ outsiders in general. I've had people be racist to me as well in more direct ways, but as long as you carry yourself with humility, compassion, confidence, and stay prayed up, you can disarm most people and put them at ease. I believe the South is still spiritually shell-shocked from the civil rights clashes, the Civil War, and the elimination of the indigenous peoples from here. Becoming the constant butt-end for comedy and prejudice from other parts of the US further reinforces the tribalism as well. The land needs healing, and the cities and people need a lot of prayer.

I am Afro Latina, and back in 2009 my daughter was MISS KENTUCKY PLUS, and had to compete in a Pageant in Louisiana. We drove down with my White girlfriend, my Black daughter and her White Boyfriend. I think we only survived because we had a mixed car of people. There was one time we were leaving a McDonald's in Alabama, and a race riot almost erupted because some black men started cat-calling my daughter and her 6'5 boyfriend stepped to the brothers! LAWD HAVE MERCY why he do that!!! Almost INSTANTLY white folks and black folks started taking sides. I begged him NOT to throw any punches because it felt like we were NEVER GONNA get out of Alabama if he did. Thank goodness he restrained himself and we walked to our vehicle with our food. But no joke, EVERY SINGLE WHITE PERSON in the vicinity walked him to the car to make sure that we left safely. I never saw ANYTHING like that in my life!!! I have Never been so scared in my life. I just KNEW we were about to die that day! All because some Black guys thought my daughter was beautiful. I have NO DESIRE to EVER drive through the RED STATES EVER AGAIN!!!!

When your soul is hurting because of racism then you know that it's really bad. I'm white, Jewish (not Hasidic) and gay, (you wouldn't know by looking/talking at me) and I was made to feel welcome in Montgomery, AL. I have family by marriage here, and a member of my family was in law enforcement, I was told that in his 40+ years as a cop, he never once fired his gun. I have however seen with my own eyes the active racism that happens in Montgomery, and it was frightening. Noticeably at a gas station. I got my gas, was going into the store to pay and I was probably 6th in the queue. I joined the queue to pay, then I was tapped on the shoulder by an employee and asked to come to another cashiers counter. In my naivety, I followed her to pay for my gas. That's when I noticed that I was the only white person in the store (besides the employees) waiting inline to pay. I immediately stopped, and went back to join the queue. The scowling and the burning eyes from the employee was making me uncomfortable, probably because I had embarrassed her. I waited in line, paid up and then went on my way. I have two amazing friends in San Francisco, they're originally from Guatemala and El Salvador, we went to Palm Springs just before Christmas, and on our drive down, I wanted to go shopping in LA, Rodeo Dr to be exact. Whilst they would happily join me walking down the street, they wouldn't come into the stores with me, again, being naïve it took a while to notice. I asked them why they didn't come into the store, and they said that they're not allowed as it makes employees and customers uncomfortable. They said being Hispanic is difficult, even in LA and they had to pick and choose where they could shop, eat etc without causing distress to others. I'm shocked, and ask if they were being serious. Yup, they were. Kinda ironic, when California used to be apart of Mexico until around 1848/50. That's when it dawned on me; the United States, isn't at all united, which is sad, and that that hurts my soul. I loved your video, you have a new subscriber. To you all, please stay safe.

We drove in a big school van to a class trip in the Okeefenokee Swamp in far southern Georgia near Florida. We were the only ones there in very early spring at the campsite waiting to start the day and two guys come up to tell us about what rentals and activities they had. They stopped short and looked at the town and northern state on the van and said "Oh you're from ___" You dont got any of those dark people here with you do you?" My friend changed the subject and tried to ask questions about the visitors center.

I've never understood racism... People are people to me. Where I live in Mississippi, as a white woman, men of all ages and races go out of their way to hold the door open for me. One of the sweetest things I've ever seen was an old white man with a cane who had a store door partly opened to go in when a young black guy was coming out. The old guy motioned for the young guy to come out first while the young guy was motioning for the old guy to come in first while he held the door. I kid you not... they went back and forth 4 or 5 times, each one motioning and smiling for the other one to go first. The young guy finally convinced the old guy to come in while he held the door for him.

I remember listening to an audio tape of an African American elderly man. It was taped after Jim Crow and things weren integrated. The interviewer asked him if things were better and his answer shocked me. He actually said that he was happier under Jim Crow because he was always with his own people and never encountered racism. I think there is a lot of truth in that statement for every race. All you have to do it look at the ethnic breakdown map of any large city in America and it is obviously people prefer to be around others that look like them, have the same culture, lifestyle etc. Does that make us racist? I don't think so.

It all comes down to how you were raised and you environment. I personally prefer to be around a mix of people. I don't like it when there are too many of any certain heritage. Blacks from the south are totally different from the black people up north. When I first move to Alabama I had black people look at me like I was from outta space or something. If you don't agree to what they say you was no longer their friend. Some of the black people from the south still has that slave mentality that would get me angry about them. I didn't fit in to be apart of the culture in Birmingham Alabama. I was born and raise in new Jersey I was never use to the black culture in the south vs living in the northeast we did things totally different. This is coming out of the mouth from a black man. This is why I no longer live in the state of Alabama.

Wow, this is so sad and I'm shocked. It's 2023, how can such places exist in this country today???? I'm from the northeast, born in Vermont and grew up in NYC. I watched this whole video, and it's depressing and creepy to see areas with boarded up homes, more like creepy houses in the woods. What's up with Alabama? I'm looking at video and I'm thinking, those areas need to be cleaned up, rebuild it with nice homes, fix the roads, build new and nice communities with all that space there. This is so sad. I live right now in New Jersey with my boyfriend and he wants to one day move to Georgia state, he told me that Georgia is happening right now because of affordable cost of living, jobs, new towns and cities, gentrified areas and many people from all over the USA and foreigners from all over the world had moved to Georgia in the last few decades. I'm worried about the racist attitudes in the South, because I'm mixed race, my mom is Asian, she's Korean and my dad is white American from the northeast. How will I be treated if I went to visit the South? My boyfriend is white. I love to explore different places and cultures in America. But now I'm afraid to, plus the South, it sounds like people there are way too comfortable pulling their guns out on strangers for the dumbest reasons.
