I think it was in 1994, i was a 10yr old kid, we were in a rented Ambassador on our way to Ooty, at Vijaynagar Signal in Bangalore, our Ambassador driver stopped since signal turned red, a truck banged the car from rear at atleast 40-50 speed, i was seated at the back seat with mumma and younger brother, dad at the front with the driver. The Trunk took most of the impact, so much that the rear windshield was all cracked, and the worst that happened was rear passenger doors on both sides got jammed, we jumped the seats and got out from from door. Thats all that happened. Infact after calling the travels they arranged another ambassador and we continued our trip. Such was the chassis of an ambassador. Another car with such chassis was Tata Sierra, those were literally like heavy metal boxes on road.

Our Honda City ZX (2007) crashed with a still car at 140 km/h, it's chassis was so strong that it withstood all the crash damage (deformed slightly, engine fully safe). Our Chevrolet Sail (2013 model, Sedan) is yet another strong car, crashed with bridge border wall at 90 km/h, chassis withstood all the damage (very minor deformation, engine fully safe). Nowadays, the build quality of the car chassis has drastically degraded, our Toyota Innova Crysta (2018 model) roof has got dented just due to monkey jumps (our area has alot of monkeys)

It’s amazing to me that there are brand new models out there that are more unsafe than my relatively low-volume, Australian made Holden that most people have never heard of, simply by virtue of being from and for a market where safety isn’t considered important by bean counters. It’s not that my car is unsafe - only that it was made nearly 20 years ago, still has four airbags standard, still has seatbelt pretensioners, traction control, ABS, everything that I’d consider essential in a modern car, and it’s made of metal that can actually hold up in a crash. But it’d want to have all these things considering it cost the equivalent of $70,000 today. I really feel for you guys in India and Africa. Cars should be safe everywhere, safety is a fundamental human right, not a privilege afforded only to those who can afford it.

Unfortunately, there actually ARE cars which are good, have decent safety, etc. but those cars are blighted by reliability and fit and finish issues, and parts which are more expensive, AND less mileage. If an Indian sees a car which has Good mileage Cheap parts He/She will instantly buy whatever vehicle it is. Sad but it’s the truth.
