As a language teacher, the most important piece of advice I can give everyone is to commit to a language that "grabs" you. The number one determinant to whether or not you'll become fluent is motivation, not linguistic usefulness (unless that's your motivation). Your fascination with the language, culture, and/or people will be the biggest driving force.

Whatever motivations causes me to learn it, but it all starts from my desire to learn Swedish because of someone said if it is a sexy language. Oh yeah, what I write is the spoken form of Norgie, not the written form.

Chinese is definitely up there due to its population, but I'd put Spanish higher due to its geographical dispersion and its relation to other culturally and economically relevant languages. Plus, I hear a lot more Spanish music than I do Chinese music. Chinese is incredibly useful if you're in business and doing business with China, but it's fairly localized enough that, for casual learners, it's only going to be useful if you specifically visit China.

Just doing quick research: In Vietnam, the most spoken foreign language English, Russian was more popular in the 80's and 90's because of the Cold War, French has significant standing because of the colonial era, and about 1% of the population speaks a Chinese language. It isn't necessarily Mandarin (from message boards that I've browsed, it seems to be Cantonese), and for comparison, 1% is also the proportion of Americans that speak Mandarin and Cantonese combined, so learning Mandarin would be about as useful in Vietnam as it would be in America. www.quora.com/What-foreign-language-is-taught-in-Vietnam-French-or-English en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Languages_of_the_United_States Similarlo, Laos and Cambodia have significant French-speaking populations. In both those cases, English is threatening French, and Mandarin Chinese doesn't factor much into the equation (though the French in the area has some influences from Cantonese): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_language_in_Laos en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_language_in_Cambodia So ultimately, since most people watching this video are from the West and probably American or Canadian, I'd guess that Spanish would be more useful for the average person than Mandarin, and if you're in Canada, French. If you want to tour Europe, you can get basically everywhere if you speak English, French, and German. So with all that in mind, I'd basically keep the Top 4 the same, except switch around Mandarin and Spanish.

I'm a native Swedish speaker and started to learn Chinese 10 years ago. Have reached a fairly good level but really have problems finding a use for Chinese anywhere else than in China. Finding a job in Europe based on Chinese as a sole merit is also hard, especially if you're not interested in doing business or something. Thus, I could honestly put it just above Japanese, just because there are more Chinese people than Japanese but otherwise its use is fairly limited to China only. Also, even in trade and so on most Chinese people know better English than we could know Chinese anyway, so usually it's not really useful even there. Maybe only in tourism..... :)
@shuxuuann
@shuxuuann 6 жыл бұрын
I feel that your comment makes sense but learning Chinese gives you access to many opportunities in different fields due to reasons like the sheer population size of china (you mentioned that). Chinese is not localised, there are many Chinese communities outside China (I’m part of one) and they speak Chinese, obviously. Just the population of these communities around the world makes Chinese a legitimate option for even casual learners. (this comment might have been biased but I’m chinese so bias is unavoidable. also i live in Asia so it is a little hard to relate to your perspective)
@johnhooyer3101
@johnhooyer3101 6 жыл бұрын
I actually think that bias is incredibly important, and I don't discount it -- after all, there's no such thing as an objectively best second language. It's all relative. Many language experts have said that the most useful language for you to learn is the one that you're the most passionate about. If you want to study your family's history, it might be useful to learn the language of their homeland (in my case, Dutch). If you want a great engineering degree, German is pretty useful. If you have no plans on traveling but intend on learning a second language anyway, then you go with the most spoken language in your region that isn't your own. If your best friend only speaks Esperanto, then learning Esperanto will be of a bigger benefit to you than most other "useful" languages. If you're a nerd who wants to develop his own science fiction language for a book series, then it would actually be incredibly useful to learn an obscure language with a completely different kind of grammar (or pick up the grammar book for Ithkuil). _Generally_ speaking, English is the most useful language internationally. After that, it really depends. For most English speakers, it will be either Spanish, French, or German. In Asia, you might find Hindi more useful. For general use among international travelers, it's hard to say. Here are some interesting statistics about the most widespread written languages, though: *Number of books published* 1. English (21.84%) 2. Chinese(10.99%) 3. German (9.78%) 4. Spanish (8.88%) 5. Japanese (6.12%) 6. Russian (5.29%) 7. French (4.81%) 8. Korean (3.90%) 9. Italian (3.78%) 10. Dutch (3.71%) *Newspaper and Magazine production by language* 1. English (62.55%) 2. Spanish (6.93%) 3. German (5.88%) 4. Chinese (3.90%) 5. Hindi (2.93%) 6. French (2.38%) 7. Polish (1.10%) 8. Russian (0.95%) 9. Italian (0.90%) 10. Portuguese (0.88%) (what I find interesting about that last list is that, if you plan on reading newspapers a lot, Polish might be more useful than Russian) Here's the big one, when I think of usefulness: Scholarly journal production by language* 1. English (45.24%) 2. German (11.01%) 3. Chinese (6.51%) 4. Spanish (5.66%) 5. French (4.94 %) 6. Japanese (3.46%) 7. Italian( 2.99%) 8. Polish (1.70%) 9. Portuguese (1.70%) 10. Dutch (1.48%) I should clarify that the methods here weren't talking about individual scientific papers, but rather scientific publishers regardless how how much scholarship came from them. When you talk about the total number of scientific and scholarly journals, over 80% is done in English. However, I have been unable to find the numbers for other languages. If the 11% of scholarly publishers who publish in German is of any indication, though, it seems to me that German would actually be the second-most useful language, according to that particular metric. Which, I'll be honest, makes it pretty useful to me. This is another category of usefulness that would be relevant to many people: *Movies and video production by language* (information gathered by IMDb) 1. English (34.89%) 2. Spanish (5.12%) 3. German (3.63%) 4. French (3.34%) 5. Japanese (1.72%) 6. Italian (1.08%) 7. Danish (0.87%) 8. Dutch (0.76%) 9. Portuguese (0.71%) 10. Russian (0.60%) *Distribution of languages on the Internet* 1. English (56.43%) 2. German (7.71%) 3. French (5.59%) 4. Japanese (4.86%) 5. Spanish (2.96%) 6. Chinese (2.38%) 7. Italian (2.03%) 8. Dutch (1.92%) 9. Russian (1.66%) 10. Korean (1.52%) *Percentage of the world's literate population* (this is not the same thing as the percentage of the literacy among those who speak the language) 1. Chinese (14.68% readers compared to 14.1% of the world's speakers) 2. English (10.58% compared to 5.52% of the world's speakers) 3. Spanish (5.47% readers compared to 5.85% of the world's speakers) .... (the of this list mostly shows similar trends between number of the world's literate and number of the world's speakers. I think that the main takeaway here is that English, which is notorious for being difficult to spell, has a larger literate population than the phonetically spelled Spanish) For the record, this is where I found my statistics: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q4XMYqOubLtjiMU&lc=z22zx1urgqnesxcuracdp433nps5n3pgc3kryrb4vstw03c010c.1510233423843399 Normally I would have been more thorough, but I recognize that this is a fairly casual internet conversation. In any case, it seems that German is still pretty useful for certain things, and Spanish isn't _quite_ as useful as I thought. At least, by certain metrics. It would still be the most useful language for Americans to learn. I'm not personally all that interested, actually. It should be noted that I'm highly interested in learning Chinese.

out of the ones arguing that spanish is hard, yours gives a more realistic side of what spanish is, rather than the usual 'put three or four infinitives with three or four of their conjugated forms' that are plastered all over the comment section. Even so, i find it easier than my native language, english; once you know how each tense works, the rest is easy. But hey, that's just my opinion, and i respect the fact your sticking up for a language you love
@Guimaster127

Of course! I just said that Spanish can be harder in some cases, like verb tenses, but it's much easier in pronounciation, for example. If we write "mesa", we say /m e s a/. But English has tons of pronounciation diferences for each letter. However, when you get used to it, it feels natural to just pronounce words the way they are pronounced. That's why I like English: it's really easy! Also thanks for being polite, people like you aren't very common on the Internet.

I'm a South Indian (automatically makes me trilingual, Malayalam, Hindi and English) but I am from Saudi Arabia so I also speak, write and read Arabic too. (For those of you wondering, I didn't learn Hindi until I moved to India) I've always had a thing for learning languages. I tried learning French by myself in middle school but with nothing but Duolingo and Derniere Danse I couldn't continue. Few months ago I discovered Anime and the language sounded so beautiful to me. Everytime I pay attention to a new language I get completely lost in it so I shook it off anyways. But I kept going back to Japanese. Not much of an anime person, I was surprised to find myself watching and rewatching animes to listen to the language. I've gotten hold of the accent pretty well (I can acquire accent pretty quickly) and I'm now really actually looking forward to learning the language. I've seen everywhere that it's very difficult so I'm pretty scared. Lol but still I haven't lost hope (as I haven't started learning yet XD)

The Spanish language has been present in what is now the United States since the 15th century, with the arrival of Spanish colonization in North America. the United States now has the second largest Spanish-speaking population in the world after Mexico it is common for many American manufacturers to use multilingual product labeling using English, French and Spanish Spanish is the most widely taught second language in the United States.

@@wtfdidijustwatch1017 The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the Mexican-American War (1836-1848). The treaty came into force on July 4, 1848.The Mexican government, which had never recognized the Republic of Texas as an independent country, had warned that annexation would be viewed as an act of war. The opponents of this treaty were led by the Whigs, who had opposed the war and rejected Manifest destiny in general, and rejected this expansion in particular. The central issue in the 1840s was expansion, with proponents of "manifest destiny" arguing for aggressive westward expansion, even at the risk of war with Mexico over the annexation of Texas. Neither side took any further action to avoid a war. With the defeat of its army and the fall of its capital, Mexico entered into negotiations to end the war.The treaty called for the U.S. to pay US$15 million to Mexico. The Mexican Cession included essentially the entirety of the former Mexican territory of California,Nuevo Mexico,Nevada,Arizona, and parts of Colorado. The treaty extended the choice of U.S. citizenship to Mexicans in the newly purchased territories, before many African Americans, Asians and Native Americans were eligible. If they chose to, they had to declare to the U.S. government within a year the Treaty was signed; otherwise, they could remain Mexican citizens, but they would have to relocate.Over 90% chose American citizenship. The others returned to Mexico (where they received land), or in some cases in New Mexico were allowed to remain in place as Mexican citizens. Mexican communities remained segregated de facto from and also within other U.S. communities, continuing through the Mexican migration right up to the end of the 20th century throughout the Southwest. Mexicans and Indians in the annexed territories faced a loss of civil and political rights, even though the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo promised American citizenship to all Mexican citizens living in the territory of the Mexican Cession. The U.S. government withheld citizenship from Indians in the southwest until the 1930s, although they were citizens under Mexican law.

Every Sweedish person i have met knows 3 languages, are very cultured and have no apparent superiority complex. Even though Sweedish have better Lifestyle than Americans. I think only Moroccons may be the only ones that know more languages than Sweedish people. They are taught to speak Arabic, morrocon, spanish, french, and English, and that is part of their school system. lol Meanwhile here in Ignorant closed of USA English is the only language really spoken, it is no wonder why arrogance levels are off the charts, it's the only language and world we know. I personally believe the "lengua franca" should be changed to another one, we are too privileged, and now the world caters to our language further feeding the ego. Spanish would be the next obvious choice, easy to learn and sounds nice.
