Could you review Schaeffer Supreme 9000 engine oil. Back when I was working as a diesel mechanic the place I worked ran Schaeffer in all the diesel engines. When I would perform an engine overhaul the rod and main bearings showed almost no wear at all. Other than minor debris "scratch" on the bearings they looked almost new. These engines I'm talking about were operated under heavy duty use. I've overhauled quite a few engines in my life as a mechanic from small diesel engines, DT466, up to large natural gas engines, 7042GSI, and have never seen bearings with so little wear than at my first mechanic job with those running Schaeffer oil.

I knew an elderly retired pilot who flew radial engined aircraft in the 1950s. His job that took him into Alaska. He would do his maintenance in super cold weather, and for an oil change he'd just drain it onto the ground, wait a while and roll it up, throw it into the trash can. Interestingly, flight manuals and FAA methods manuals tell how to dilute oil with fuel to compensate for the cold.

Mr Lake, thank you so very much for taking the time to be so in depth!! I’m sure most of us don’t care how long your videos or live stream run because of how in-depth you go !! You don’t need to be “more smooth and polished”!! One of the things that I truly enjoy about watching your videos is that you are more down to earth and relaxed.. Don’t change who you are to be more smooth and polished. We all know how intelligent you are if we didn’t we wouldn’t be here!! we all have high level of respect for you. I’m sure that I’m not the only one that would be slightly turned off if you started being more uptight or up snooty to be more smooth and polished. I would rather watch you all day long as yourself then to have you be prim and properto make the Internet happy. So please don’t change who you are! As a female who’s been turning wrenches my entire life, my dad told me if I wanted to ride or drive. I had to learn at least the basics, and he started me turning wrenches on my first minibike when I was very, very young less than 10 he literally would stand behind me and walk me through how to do the basics, and he did that on my regular dirt bikes and then on my first car and if I wanted to use his truck and horse trailer to take my horses somewhere, ir to take the boat out fishing, I had to service his truck as well. So it is something that I very much enjoy. Watching you explain more in-depth is absolutely incredible, you are a huge wealth of knowledge and we are all benefiting from that!!! Again, thank you very very much!

When it comes to different brands, your video doing the oil change on the boxer. Change the oil twice, sample the oil and look for wear under 5 parts per million. That what the engine likes regardless of marketing. Another brilliant suggestion, look at the fuel dilution and then treat with injector cleaner. I can go on ie dont add additives and changed the chemistry. Best engine oil channel for learning by far!!!!!

This is why I love KZbin University. We get to see Lake "The Motor Oil Geek" but really "The Motor Oil GOAT". As a DIYer and one that wants to keep my cars/truck running at their best I love The Motor Oil Geek channel and the fact he will corroborate with other KZbin channels to educate us. Lake will never tell you a brand that is best. However, Lake will tell you what chemistries are the best. Lake guided me to a cure of fuel dilution problems in my Cummins through using diesel fuel additives. It turned out to be carboned up injectors. I settled on Howes Diesel Defender, again Lake did not suggest a brand. The fuel dilution issue disappeared within a couple of treated tank fills. I am a huge believer in used oil analysis (UOA). You don't know the actual health of your engine without data from doing UOA. I will add Howes Diesel Defender to every diesel fill up. Thanks for answering my question on liquid titanium. I used it a bunch from the Kendall brand. Kendall recently changed their formulation to be more in line with Dexos and no longer has the liquid titanium additive. My cars seemed to like it. I just tore the valve cover on my daughter's 2003 Dodge Caravan to change the gaskets. I expected to see sludge. Everything was clean. I suspect that it may have piston deposits so I switched to Valvoline Restore and Protect so we'll see what happens. I will be doing UOA to monitor the process. Again, Lake had a huge influence on my maintenance. Keep up the videos Lake! You are truly the GOAT of Motor Oil Tribology. Sharing your knowledge makes better DIYers out of the average Joe and we appreciate you.

Thank goodness for the The Motor Oil Geek. Finally someone who knows what he's talking about. No bullshit tests, just technology and chemistry. Have used most every brand on the market in the past 40 years and always refer to/rely on my analysis results. As for the AMSOIL product, none of my engines seem to like it.
@charlesb42673 ай бұрын
You have me quite curious at that comment about the Amsoil and refreshing to see someone not falling for a sales gimmick of exclusivity and high price which a few other oils out there are on that theme as well. Since Amsoil isn't for the most part sold in stores or in other easy to access physical retail outlets I have never gone down that rabbit hole ( I can't stand the Amway theme of marketing anyway ), I had only used a bit of their full synthetic automatic transmission oil years ago in a power steering application due to the superior flow in extreme cold weather as synthetics were hard to come by back in the 1980's for all applications. But back to your findings, what was showing up in your engines that did not like their formulation over some other brands ( by the way what brands/viscosities are you using currently ? )
@tech503493 ай бұрын
@@charlesb4267 Although always within specifications, I did not like the viscosity break down(CST), sulfation and oxidation values. Had better results with other oils. Also had decreased fuel economy over two engine platforms of 0.3-0.4 mpg. Why would someone pay double the price for a product with a less than comparable result? As for present oils in use: Castrol EDGE 5W30 and 10W30 Pennzoil Platinum 5W20 and 5W30 Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0W20 and 5W20 Will be experimenting with Valvoline Restore & Protect on my oldest vehicle(24 years old and 500K+ miles) as I'm curious. Listening to your stream, I kept thinking about AMSOIL. How AMSOIL has additive packages that do not meet the specifications of my 2.7 Turbo DI engine. My choice is the Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30 Full Synthetic Motor Oil (Dexos 1). I think I've gone full circle with my thoughts of the manufacturer recommended oils now. Love love love all the info in this stream. Good stuff.

Amsoil part numbers DP020 and DP530 meet Dexos D. 0W-20 and 5W-30.

I use amsoil signature series in all my vehicles. My wife's car, a 2011 toyota avalon, escaped my attention for a while. The oil had 42166 miles on it when I changed it. Caught a sample, no problems indicated. She still drives it daily.

???????? He say´s several times "BRANDS DO NOT MATTER!!" You follow the manufactuers specific recommendation. The Viscosity recommendation can be quastionable due to the CAFE regulations.
@charlesb42673 ай бұрын
@@markwarnberg9504 Unfortunately that seems to have become a problem in some countries and up here in Canada as well, and some vehicle/engine uses may very well not survive the thin viscosities due to sheer as he pointed out with heavy towing for example. I find it interesting that half ton pickups ( gas or diesel ) for an example are calling for 0W-20 when their 3/4 and 1 ton gas engines call for 5W-30. The heavy duty trucks don't fall into the same category so are not held to a certain fuel mileage expectation.

Great information! I used to use expensive "boutique" oils every 5k. After I started doing UOA's, I switched to quality FS oils I could buy at local big box stores and change my oil twice as often and filter every other oil change and still spend less than what I was on 1 oil change with "boutique" oils. The car does mainly short trips.
@MrsSunshine753 ай бұрын
@zspred Go-ahead and change that filter with that dirty oil in it every time. It doesn’t cost much and your engine is worth it!
@Bobthebuilder.693 ай бұрын
@@MrsSunshine75you beat me to it. Why spend 20+ dollars on oil and not spend $6-10 for a filter?

He makes a good point about oils... and about being able to use not for purpose oils... I once got stuck in the middle of nowhere in my old AW11 MR2 when I noticed a lower than normal oil pressure indication (not no pressure, just low).... Instantly pulled over.. Checked my oil level. Dipstick was totally dry... Called up my dad who was an aircraft engineer(dayjob) and racecar engine builder (weekends)... He said "You have any oil at all?". In the boot I found I had 1L of black as tar SAE30 used oil out of my lawnmower, and 1L of Brand new Redline MT90 gear oil (BLOODY EXPENSIVE STUFF!). He said "Tip it in. Any oil is better than no oil!. Then stop at the next place you find that has motor oil that is the right viscosity. Change it to that. We'll flush it and do the filter when you get home".... Hey it worked!. That little 1980's engine lasted me another 120,000km (280,000km total). Not bad at all for a 1984 4A-GE that had me running it to the redline around twisty mountain roads far too often.

Thank you Lake for another great informative video!! I didn't see it live, in fact I had to watch in shifts, lol. Your oil filter info is intriguing, I have used the higher end filters, thinking I was getting max efficiency, but they are "guaranteed" for 25K, so by definition are less efficient. I'm never going that far, but if it's 99+% efficient @ 20u I'm in. Lots of talk about Fram cheapening it's XG (Ultra Synthetic) filter by eliminating the wire backed full synthetic media & replacing it with un-wire backed layered cellulose/synthetic. The old media (OG) was tested by Ascent testing & was outstanding @ 10u & 15u, Fram advertising says the new media is even more efficient. I'd love to see more videos on filters!!

On my 10 years old BMW I had lots of problems due to low oil pressure with 5w-30. Once I changed it to 5w-40 not a single problem ever since.
