The reason "It's a Wonderful Life" is such a treasured classic nowadays is because when it originally was released, it flopped so hard that after 20 some-odd years later, when the rights to the film became available, nobody wanted to purchase it; thus it went into the public domain. As a result of this, many low budget local television networks began airing it late night, around the holidays, to fill airtime without having to pay anything. Families looking for something to watch on TV, during a time where most people had 3 or 4 channels, began tuning in to this movie; and because it was always on around the holidays, it turned into a beloved annual tradition.

Another thing that hurt Titan AE was that at the time, Fox was having a dispute with one of the big theater chains (I forget which one, not Regal or AMC, but they were partially owned by Paramount). That chain would only show a limited number of Fox releases each year. That summer, some markets got Titan AE, others got Big Momma's House. Fox did a big advertising push for Titan, but the film's limited availability in places did nothing to help its numbers. Big Momma's House, on the other hand, did quite well. I like Geena Davis, but it think Cutthroat Island would have faired a little better in the hands of another lead.

The biggest issue is getting enough people to pay full price for a first-run big screen presentation. For some reason or another, audiences simply didn't feel the urgency. I enjoyed the Golden Compass (though I've not read the books). Regardless of what people are saying about it.

Holy Christ in a Cracker Jack box! Why the funk didn't you include Mars Needs Moms?! You'd think that bomb would make Battlefield Earth's box office income look like the Cave of Wonders from Aladdin!

It's a bad movie, but a Disney. Disney didn't go bankrupt over it.

The only reason It’s a Wonderful Life became a Christmas classic is because it was free to show, so the TV channels started showing it nonstop around Christmas.

You forgot Mr. Bug Goes to Town 1941 which caused flopped due to World War 2 going on and Fleischer Studios to be bought out by Paramount Pictures. Also, ImageMovers went bankrupt when Mars Needs Moms 2011 flopped big time. Disney company was nearly ruined over the 100 years with flops including Pinocchio 1940, Fantasia 1940, Bambi 1942 due to World War 2. Later on, in 1959 Sleeping Beauty 1959 flopped which caused animator layoffs and a reduction in the animation workforce. In 1985 The Black Cauldron was a big flop which almost bankrupted the company, the Rescuers Down Under 1990 flopped which prevented Disney from making film sequels for theaters until the 2010s with Frozen and Wreck it Ralph, in 2002 Treasure Planet was released and did flop but it was Home on the Range 2004 which ended the release of 2D animated films in theaters although it made a brief comeback with The Princess and the Frog 2009 and Winnie the Pooh 2011 and caused Disney to switch over to CGI films. In 2022 movies like Lightyear and Strange World flopped so hard, that it could spell the end of Disney CGI animated films or cause them to take a break from it. Sooner or later Disney company will likely resort to more live action Disney films in theaters like they did in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s since live action is still cheaper and easier to make than animation which is time consuming and expensive.

Balto (1995) - Amblimation Although the film has gained a sizable cult following on home video and DVD, “Balto” was not a critical and commercial success upon its theatrical release. It didn’t help that the film came out A MONTH AFTER Pixar’s “Toy Story”. It was pulled from theaters after its third week, and Amblimation (an animation production arm of Steven Spielberg’s “Amblin Entertainment”) was shut down after only three films (the other two were “An American Tail: Fievel Goes West” and “We’re Back! A Dinosaur’s Story”). The good news is that a lot of the animators who worked on that film would go on to work at “DreamWorks Animation” (an animation subsidiary of Spielberg’s other production company “DreamWorks Pictures”).

I honestly had no idea there was an Astro Boy film released in 2009. I worked at a movie theater that year and I swear we didn't even get it.
