Call me by your name and Find me by André Aciman are both some of the dreamiest summerbooks I've ever read. Northern Italy in the 80's, say no more, I am sold. I was super happy you recommended The Summer Book by Tove Jansson. I read it every summer. Thank you Jenny for such different book recommendations! Have a lovely summer 💌

"Call me by your name" is in my opinion the perfect summer read. It just really makes you feel the warm, chill, romantic atmospher of a vcation in italy. It's beautifull, it's a little bit sad but nostalgic and wow I'm gonna reread it this summer just for the vibes

The setting for "The Summer Book" reminded me of one of my favorite summer reads- Fire on the Mountain by Anita Desai. It takes me back to my summers in India, where we'd spend weeks living in one of the mountain towns to escape the heat in the city. The book is set in one of such towns. An old lady who has distanced herself from her family, finds herself spending the summer with her great-grand daughter. The book starts with the harvesting of apricots which are inherent reminders of mountain summers to me, ends up with the dry summer forest being set on fire, while old family drama unfolds in between. I loved it!

A nice easy read is: 'Midnight at the blackbird café'. A great summer read is 'Beautiful Ruins' written by Jess Walter. And an oldy: 'White Oleander' written by Janet Fitch. And are you visiting the West Coast of France? Read: 'All the light we cannot see' and go and visit Saint Malo. Or read 'The Paris Wife'.

Summer in Scotland for me is soggy rainy days and lovely bright sky days. Making the most of the sunshine and having deep fried langoustine and chips from my favourite takeaway in a cardboard box. Sitting and eating at the beach watching the ferries to the islands come too and fro. When it rains, and the plants look greener, and you stay inside and drink tea is also beautiful.

You want summer, good plot and mystery? I recommend "The dry" by Jane Harper. Set in an Australian outback, scorching hot summer, murder (or is it?) mystery, at the end you get an enlightenment and everything comes together. I love it, because you finish the book, but walk away re living it for a little longer 📚 ☺️

Also great summer reads Gerald Durrel "My family and other animals" - 1930s Corfu? Say no more. Evelyn Waugh "Brideshead Revisited" ultimate summer nostalgia and there are several good adaptations. Tana French "The Woods" - another great Irish mystery series, this book constantly flashes back to one siginifcant summer plus the language is beautiful.

I just finished one of my summer books and now I’m moving onto The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo 😬 I’m not a huge fan of crime fiction but I figured I’d give it a shot. Some of the ones on your list sound so interesting! And YES! Call Me By Your Name by André Aciman is the perfect hot and sweaty summer book and the film is lovely. I know everyone talks about it but the hype over the book and film are well-deserved.

I had that issue, too. After I graduated I read a few trashy romance novels until my brain could handle mysteries, my favorite genre. Then I read Janet Evanovich, the Stephanie Plum series. They are so much fun!!! Reading something light that doesn't require too much brainpower may help you get into the joy of reading again. It worked for me, anyway. 😁

@@dianana7371 That's a great suggestion! I got back into reading in the 1980s. I've now written three novels and a bunch of short stories. Some of my poetry was published in an online magazine that no longer exists. I don't have an agent, yet, but I'm getting help from a writing coach to make sure my writing is as polished as it can be. If I'm not writing every day like a fiend I read three books a week. A love for reading and writing seems built into my DNA.

Somehow all the summer books on my list make me feel a bit depressed, I guess it's because I really hate heat. Other Voices, Other Rooms by Truman Capote really exudes atmosphere, it's my favorite novel of his. It really transports you to the old oven-like-heat of southern U.S. I also reread every summer L'Etranger by Camus. It's curious how the ambience is summery, full of light and heat, but the narration is cold, like if the main character was in winter while the rest of the world enjoyed summer.

"The Magus" - one of my all-time favorites. David asks, What was that about? In my opinion, about a superficial young man incapable of truly feeling or connecting goes through a magical experience that changes him -- a line from the book sums it up: "Spare him till he dies. Torment him till he lives."

Hi Jenny, my top Summer book is "Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe" by Fannie Flagg: I know the story unrolls in different seasons throughout the year but what stuck with me most are the scenes located during those slow and hot Summers in Alabama. Another favorite of mine is "Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood" by Rebecca Wells which is quite similar to the previous book: it takes place in another Southern state of the USA (Louisiana), it moves repeatedly from present to past and there's a lot of drama. But this Summer I want to read "Call me by your name" as it's located in Northern Italy where I was born and spent all my life, so - who knows - maybe I will start loving this period of time thanks to a book. By the way, thank you for the suggestions. I'd love to dive in "Bonjour Tristesse".

I also read Bonjour Tristesse every summer. Love it. I wanted to recommend a book by a Spanish author, Elia Barcelo, but I cannot find an English translation (I read it in Dutch). It is very atmospheric and has a bit of a mystery to it. The original is called Disfraces Terribles. If there is an English or Swedish translation I can recommend. Otherwise check out The Razor's Edge by W. Somerset Maugham.

1. The quiet American by Graham Greene: sultry Saigon atmosphere, lovely prose, good thriller. (Similar atmosphere/setting in the film The Lover, which is an adaptation of Marguerite Duras' novel, so prob that too- and the novel's prob better!) 2. The Great Gatsby: sweltering 20's New York and beautiful prose. 3. The English Patient: Italy and the Sahara. 4. Annihilation/ Area X: weird and beautiful, set in a coastal civilisation being mysteriously reclaimed by nature. 5. The orchid thief: the steamy, verdant atmosphere of south florida swampland preserves. :-)

I loved this video! Just another example of how accomplished and intelligent you are. Your book choices are amazing and sophisticated. I can recommend the book Putney by Sofka Zinovieff, set between London and Greece, it explores the subtle and eerie ways in which an underage girl is seduced by a family friend. Poignant and beautiful. Btw I am learning Swedish now and would love if you could recommend on your channel some of your favourite Swedish authors! Much love from Bulgaria!

The Corfu Trilogy by Gerald Durrell is a favourite of ours, it made me want to up sticks and move to Greece. It also had me laughing out loud at the way he describes his family. Perfect summer read. There is a TV adaptation called The Durrells which is pretty good but much prefer the books!

Classic British "chick-lit" from the 90s: "Good Bye, Johnny Thunders" by Tania Kindersley. Unfortunately, it seems to be hardly available anymore.

I love The Summer Book. It's loosely based on Tove Jansson's niece. She didn't have a granddaughter.

Hey, could you recommend some other crime novels for me? I'm especially interested in classic, dark Scandinavian crime novels.

Jo Nesbo is a Norwegian writer of the Harry Hole books. I've heard he's very good! I will be reading the first in the series (The Bat) in the next couple weeks, after I finish what I'm already reading. 😁
