Us folks in older generations largely stuck with those more difficult games simply because we typically had access to fewer games. The price games typically retail for hasn't increased much since the early 90s, and that $50 or $60 in 1990ish money was a high asking price, so we saueezed every last ounce out of what we had.

I was surprised by some of the puzzle games on NES Online. Adventure of Lolo, Key of Solomon, Ice 'n Fire and Mystery Tower were all puzzle games I had never heard of before, and they surprised me a bunch, and held up reeaaally well. Absolutely recommend checking them out. I also thought Rygar was really nice. Except for some stupid insta-deaths, it felt rather modern, and so with save states I think that'd make my top 10 too. Nr. 1 for me is easily Zelda 2. I've never gotten the hate for it. It's not nearly as cryptic as the first and doesn't at all require a guide. It also offers a big adventure that is satisfyingly difficult all the way through, without ever getting too hard. Probably one of my all time favorite games, and that it came out on the NES is crazy!

Challenging games can sometimes be fun but if it wasn't for Nintendo's Mario franchise back then I probably wouldn't even be a video game fan. Sometimes I wonder what it would have been like for open sandbox games to existed back in the 8 and 16 bit era.
@bioluminescentlyunfolding57164 ай бұрын
That's a really tantalising question. I guess the closest thing I can think of is Sim City on the SNES - or even moreso, Mario Paint, which came with its own mouse and mousepad. Looking back, it's so strange that the latter existed at all: a painting (and music) application on a system that had no way of exporting your creations. It was a time when people with access to PCs could get software like Borealis for the RM Nimbus, or Deluxe Paint on the Amiga, so I guess we were just happy to have this oddity to mess around with, with all the playful, quirky Nintendo charm you'd expect.

I was more of an early aughts kid, but even then I had to work with what I had in terms of video games. And fittingly, they were all 16-bit era and back! You just had more of a reason to stick with games in a time when there weren’t practically endless alternatives you could hop over to. That situational incentive isn’t there as much unless you live somewhere more off-the-grid, I suppose. Kinda sad in a sense because sticking with a brutal game as a kid could be a truly gratifying experience when it wasn’t just a bad game you were stuck with. Beating OG DKC was a big childhood moment for me and my sister that I’ll always remember.

Regarding old games being hard, I’m nearly certain I know why. In fact, you spelled it out and may not have realized it. Today, if a game is too hard, you move on. We didn’t have that option when we were young. Games weren’t a dime a dozen like they are now. Basically, if you bought a game, you were playing it. You figured it out and you powered through, learning all its quirks and patterns, because games used to cost 3 weeks of dog walking or lawn mowing, or you got one for Christmas and one for your birthday. Each game was a big f***ing deal. And that, children, is why old games are hard.

I'd have to recommend StarTropics! It's my favorite NES game by far, and one of my favorite games in general. A few flaws are that there are beginner traps and cryptic puzzles. And also that Nintendo didn't include the answer to a late game question. You need a code for your submarine, and it was originally included in a real letter that came with the game that you had to actually dip in water, to reveal the code: 747. However the game is oozing with personality, and for an NES game, has a very engaging story. If you haven't played it, or only played a little, I really suggest that you give it a full try, the game deserves the love. It's definitely one of the few NES games where I feel like there is a lot to dive into. So it really may be up your alley! (Also, River City Ransom is also amazing!)

I’m a diehard Metroid fan and played Metroid 1 growing up and can still agree that game is a nightmare. Dying in that game sets you back 4 days of farming health. No map and everything looks the same. Maybe when you’re a kid and have infinite time to wander around identical looking corridors it’s fun, but nah Zero Mission made it obsolete and I have zero desire to ever go back and play the original. And Zero Mission was my favourite 2D Metroid game till Dread so ya there was a lot of good there but wouldn’t say it was successfully achieved in that NES original.

It doesn't sound like she really played all of the NES games on the Switch. I mean, she claims Ghosts and Goblins is one of the best games but she admits she didn't make it very far in it. It sounds like she's getting information from some website or something that lists it as one of the best games but I doubt she'd enjoy it if she played through the whole thing. There are some hidden gems on the Switch online service like Journey to Silius and Vice: Project Doom that are far more enjoyable than Ghosts and Goblins. Also, I don't feel Excite Bike deserves to be on the list either. It's clear that she didn't play it that much since she describes it as easy. The later courses get much harder.

I'm a bit spoiled with my PowerPak that gives my original NES 2GB of storage and lets me play the entire NES/Famicom library on it, plus mods (romhacks). I guess I got to be the cranky old man. Just kidding, I would say it's a respectable list considering the games on the switch. It's also nice to see a younger generation giving respect for what came before. For those game that were a bit more cryptic back in the day we has the "Power" Nintendo Power. Now you can easily search that stuff online or even lookup old version of Nintendo Power. We also had one other trick that you don't have with the switch or the really Nintendo hard game, or for kids that weren't good enough yet, and that was Game Genie. You could type in a "magic" password from a code book and get inifinte lives or energy, among other things. Game that would make my personal list would be Double Dragon, Double Dragon2, Ninja Gaiden and Super Mario Bros. 2(the first game I ever beat). I wasted so many hours of my childhood on those games. While I wasn't into it as much Solomon's Key was a good action puzzle game. I didn't really get into Punch Out until I had it on the Wii, at that time the best I could do is consistently get to Supper Macho Man.

Instead I got some like I think radio shack version of like a LCD think game and watch where you controlled a battleship at the bottom of the screen and had to shoot planes flying overhead. I play that thing for like 15 minutes and never say it again. Hope my pops returned it and got his money back. Had it been a Nintendo game and watch maybe better. Was not a tiger LCD game at least.
