Well the Rangers wore their Liberty jersey's that night, so it makes sense. I don't know what a better impression could have been, especially with how short and in-the-moment celly's have to be. I'm guessing he wasn't planning it, he probably just improvised and wanted it to be something unique for winning the greatest shootout of all time.

I think Malik's celebration is iconic and recognisable for Statue of Liberty. Only good cellies in the list, also a modern classic that could be on the list is the eagle by Kuznetsov after the Capitals eliminate Pens in OT.

The reason why Malik's goal and celly was so popular was more because of the meaning of the game. That game was a 15 round shootout against the Caps in 2005, which was the most shootout rounds in NHL history until 2014 when Panthers beat the Caps in 20 rounds. Yep, the Caps lost the 2 longest shootouts in the span of a decade. However, I do not know the meaning behind the handshake celly. Definitely more special celly's than that.
@Argonith152 жыл бұрын
Plus nobody really expected anything from Malik, as a defensive defenseman. And to have hands like that and a move like that, I think the celly got elevated because the goal became so iconic.

It may not be in the top ten, but I love the high kick by Panarin.
@TheSnapback2 жыл бұрын
I think Panarin's high kick is definitely a top 10 celly in of itself, but this video seemed to show more "bizarre" or "meaningful" goal celly's that are/would-be remembered decades later. Although Panarin's high kick celly is unique, I don't think it was bizarre enough for them to include in this list; especially because most of these clips are from decades ago.

Marek Malik easily takes the cake. 6'7" defender gets put into a game-deciding shootout and scores "that" goal, perfectly. Does the Statue of Liberty celly, in New York while playing for the Rangers. Iconic. Way before anyone was using this move in an NHL game, hadn't scored a goal all season to that point, and the shootout was relatively new to the league. I love how all of these either come from a guy who isn't known for scoring, or a guy who is known for scoring way too much.
