@robertcampbell80703 жыл бұрын
@@lukegregg5944 Anime is good (I think the manga is far better, others will disagree), but the pacing can be pretty rough at times. One of the hazards of adapting an ongoing manga, you either have bad pacing or tons of filler.
@prajwalkrishnabhat55393 жыл бұрын
@@lukegregg5944yes, there is an anime version and no it's not good. At least it's not as good as the manga. One of the main flaws with the anime was it's pacing, as the anime kept getting closer to the manga, the studio had to start stretching the videos which would ultimately result in 24 min episodes containing only 10 min of new information every episode. But the voice acting and music is absolutely awesome tho, like amazingly good. The openings are bangers, and the anime makes the emotional scenes even more emotional. Like it made us cry for a boat. So pluses and minuses, I guess. Ps: the animations for the first few episodes is a little bit wonky since it was animated over two decades ago.

The declaration of war to the world govt. is one of the greatest examples of why Luffy doesn't fall into the cliché silly protagonist and actually demonstrates his cleverness. Luffy realised that the only way to dismantle Robin's fear of being betrayed was making her enemy's (the entire world and its darkness) his own, reason why he decided to declare war on the world govt. He didn't say a word or some weird speech (which wouldn't have been enough to change Robin's mind ofc), he just picked the only practical solution to the problem. Absolute genius.
@Illjwamh3 жыл бұрын
All of this. The other thing I love about that scene was that when Luffy ordered Sogeking to burn the flag, he did it without question or hesitation. He knew perfectly well the ramifications of what he was doing, too, but Robin was more important.

Hearing Merphy talk about and review One Piece hits different. You can feel her passion for the series in almost every sentence. And its so contagious! I have teared up during her reviews multiple times and of course its mainly Odas writing that makes the feels come out but also the way Merphy describes everything adds another punch to it. She really has become my favourite One Piece-reviewer and I have been into the series since 2003 and have seen countless content creators come and go. I would even say that Merphy makes me love One Piece even more than I already do.

Exactly! If see other reviews of her, of some books, you might recognize that at some point when she started reviewing OP it was completely different. She seems so excited to talk, talking faster, glowing and seem so happy to talk about one piece. @@voidseaker I love TNM's earlier reviews but in the later sagas especially post timeskip, his skipped a lot of important things including entire backstory of Law because he sped through chapters to churn out videos. He also has the tendency to compare or criticise Oda's writing to Dragonball which takes up like 20% of the videos. Instead of focusing on the story like Merphy, he rather talks about how he feels about Oda's paneling, sketching, structuring, etc and offers unsolicited advice as if it can improve them. That really sour my experience when watching his video.

There are two moments that I absolutely love but are not really mentioned enough. First is in Skypiea. During the whole arc Zoro has been extremely suspicious of Robin. But when she’s hit by Ener and is KO, he is enraged. To me, this is the moment when he accepted her in the crew because she was willing to take one for the team, and retrospectively knowing Robin’s backstory, I find this moment huge. Second is in Water 7, when Nami is screaming in tears at Luffy what really happened with Robin. This was a great wake up call to Luffy, and also a great character moment for Nami. She was so upset about the crew splitting, they are her second family and we know what a hard time she had with her first one. She also knows what it is to sacrifice herself for the sake of others. And this scene is just her, yelling with her guts that she is not ready to lose another member of her family. This hit hard.
@diddyknux3 жыл бұрын
I like that scene with Nami, because it really drives home that after everything that happened with Usopp and now Robin leaving, even Luffy has a point where doubt can creep in. But hearing Nami tell him that Robin was being forced to do this gives Luffy the spark he needs to start fighting for real.
@ur3sh113 жыл бұрын
Also Nami being the most worked up about Robin's situation, too. Nami's normaly the coward one. Even when Usopp was beaten up earlier, she still showed her cowardice by hiding back at the ship instead of going to Franky House. But for Robin situation specifically, she had balls of steel. Aqua Laguana tsunamis meant nothing to her. She was ready to take charge straight to Enies Lobby. She was ready to declare war on the World Government before ANYONE ELSE in the crew. Why? Because out of the entire crews, she's the one that understands Robin the most. She was in the exact same situation with Arlong. It's incredible character writing

What made the moment even more special was that when it happened I realised that I had never actually thought about wether or not it was actually real.

Yes. Sengoku revealed Ace's heritage and later said that Whitebeard's only motivation to take Ace with him was to protect him and invest in him to be the next pirate king. This was the marine's strategy in order to plant doubt about Whitebeard's true intentions within their crew. Obviously we know that's not true, and that Whitebeard never cared about Ace's heritage, but this, in addition to Roger being the one that killed Squidward's crew, it's what tips Squidward over and makes him feel betrayed.

One of my "favorite" moments that wasn't mentioned, was when the crew was Paw-Pawed away on Saboady. Just the grief Luffy went through during what was really his first major loss. It just really hurt me in a way few series had, and that was when I realized how much I truly loved this story and these characters. So much so that I felt deeply hurt by the idea of Luffy even thinking for a moment that he had lost them all. (Not to mention that the voice acting in the anime was absolutely top tier)

Merphy, while you are doing your re-read I would also recomend that you read the volume "Wanted!". It's a collection of short stories done by Oda and they are great to see his evolution as a writer during his early years. Also, there's a story there that's set in the past of One Piece, and it involves Ryuma, the zombie samurai that Zoro fought in Thriller Bark, so you should really check it out!

she could also read Romance Dawn (the actual manga, not the first arc of One Piece) if she wants to know what Beta-One Piece was like and how Oda eventually altered his characters into what they are now. Some notable differences are (spoilers) >Garp inspired Luffy to be a pirate, since Garp is a pirate himself >Nami does appear in Romance Dawn but her final character in One Piece seems to be a combination of two characters in the manga: Silk and Ann (One being an orphan abandoned by pirates and raised by a town and Ann who travels with Luffy and hits him alot while also wearing what would be Nami's clothes.) >Devil Fruits aren't "Devil Fruits" but rather just rare fruits from a particular kind of tree that give powers when eaten. >etc.

Ok, to give some sense of order to all of this. This would be the list in "canonship" order (i.e. First one was created as canon, second retconned into being canon, third one is related to One Piece, but not related to the canon of the story, and last one is entirely unrelated to the series no matter how you look at it: * One Piece Chapter 0: Strong World: Flashback with a few tie-ins to the current storyline, and a bit of development for a lot of characters, loosely ties into Impel Down and Marineford, and serves as a character introduction for the main antagonist of the movie Strong World. Movie is not canon, of course, but this chapter is 100% * Monsters: One-shot set in the same universe as One Piece, telling the story of the samurai Ryuma, whose corpse Zoro fought in Thriller Bark (written and published before One Piece was a thing, was inducted into the canon later on). You can find it on its own or as a part of Wanted! * Romance Dawn: One-shot that sets the basis for what One Piece became. There's actually 2 versions of this, but I'm not sure the first one is available. You can find it on its own or as a part of Wanted! * Wanted!: Compilation of one-shots unrelated to One Piece, but shows Oda's evolution. As I said, it includes Romance Dawn, Monsters, and more stuff.

I'm an old One Piece fan, and i believe i started reading it in elementary school (6th grade if im not wrong), and now I'm in my 30s. The favorite moments in One Piece for me, for the most part, is the ability to always made me cry in every single arc or saga... The feat that no other manga series could achieve (and i've read A LOT). The moments are: 1. Sanji leaving Baratie and Zeff telling him "careful not to catch cold" and Sanji is instantly crying. 2. Nami, after losing all hope, kept telling Luffy to leave over and over, and finally she gives up and saying "help me". Luffy the replied with 'Atari Maeda' (Of course I Will). 3. Dr Hiruluk willing to die by eatinh Chopper's poisonous mushroom, and stated that someone is only truly dies if nobody remembers them. 4. Chopper burst out crying in reminisence of Doctor Hiruluk when the 'Sakura' blooms in Drum Island for the first time. 5. While on the run from the Navy, Vivi is saying her farewell to the strawhats. Not wanting the Navy to know that she is in cahoot with them, they raise their arms with the 'X' mark. The mark that silently represent that even without words, they will be always nakamas. 6. After Norland and his crew was dishonorably outcasted from the island because they cut down the ancestor's trees, Calgara finally founds out that all of the thing they done is for the good of the people because the trees gave them the sickness. Calgara then vowed that they will always be welcomed here next time they came, but the island then got knocked up to the sky, and Norland was executed and called as the biggest liar in history. 7. All Robin wants is to die so The Strawhats could live. But after chasing her, burning the World Government Flag, and challenge the world, Luffy and the strawhats ask Robin to once again join them. And Robin replied "I want to live.. Take me to the seas with you" 8. Brook's pirate crew the Rumbars venture into the Grand Line, but they face with imminent death. One by one the crew dies while playing the orchestra... Till only Brook was left. 9. Hancock offered Luffy a preposition, to either get a ship and sail away or help the Amazonian's life. Without hesitation, Luffy smiles and choose the later and made Hancock fell in love with him. 10. Ace's death in the (literal) hand of Akainu, after Luffy saved him. His last words are the grateful feelings that the people that he met had accepted him. Luffy litterally broke down after this.

they say the strawhats became a pirate crew in the water 7 saga Also interesting to note is that Zoro's loyalty really goes so far back. Even in Alabasta when Luffy asked him to save Smoker, Zoro followed the order. Other strawhats at this point dont necessarily follow Luffy's order and there isn't a clear distinction between captain and crew. But zoro is there
@PlagueKing_LordFalix3 жыл бұрын
That's a point people over look. It really showed his loyalty not just to Luffy but also to Smoker. Smoker saw a man like Zoro tell him "I'm only saving you because my captain said to. I wouldn't have done it myself." He's seeing that Zoro will follow Luffy no matter what and that he actually does view him as a Captain. Its at this point I think Smoker really started to suspect Luffy was more than he appeared. Up until now he has just followed him out of pride and ego, nothing more. Then he sees a man like Zoro actively support Luffy as a Captain when ordered to save him and he starts to chase him for completely different reasons. Luffy saved him with a smile and a laugh and said that he liked him as he did it. Zoro knowing what it meant to save him does it anyway because his Captain said to and Smoker is left re-evaluating his entire life.
@raitorino75203 жыл бұрын
@@PlagueKing_LordFalix I would beg to disagree. Smoker chased Luffy because he saw Luffy smile as he was being executed which no one ever does. He probably chased him out of pride and ego, sure, but he also knew at Loguetown that Luffy was different. Smoker and Luffy's relationship is really interesting though. I suppose he does start to respect Luffy and his crew at that point, and was probably questioning his sense of justice

One moment I love, but feel didn't necessarily stick with a lot of readers, was Noland and Calgara's backstory and the subsequent ending. It feeds into larger narrative themes in the series like inherited will (Viper taking Calgara's part and Luffy Noland through Cricket) and the cruelty of social hierarchies. As horrid as the world nobels are, the first time we see such blatant abuse from rulers (correct me if I'm wrong about this) is when Noland gets executed on false claims and the people watch as his crew desperately try to reach the podium unsuccesfully. And he never saw his friend, dying disgraced and made into a legend to falsely be passed on to children. To this day I can't read it without bursting into tears. (Also Calgara slaying the snake and/or god trying to kill Noland, putting his faith on the words of this stranger instead of some 30 years of what he's been taught to believe in. Chills, it's so good. Could rant about this flashback for days.)

Absolutely agree. But I'm a sucker for these kinds of tragic "They never knew what actually happened and why their friend didn't return/betrayed them/what happened to them trope. I love how Oda portrays most of his female characters. While occasionally there are some damsel in distress tropes or pervy humor, most of the times he shows how strong, confident and in control they are of the situation. That in contrast with countless recent shows that prefer to tell us through direct dialogue how strong and independent and competent they are. And the examples are countless: Nami and Robin whenever the people or places they care for are in danger, Vivi acting like a future queen throughout Alabasta, Tsuru commanding respect every time she enters the scene, even in front of Admirals or Shichibukai, and even Hiyori (although I hated her last scene portrayal) in the nearly finished Wano, while not having physical strength, standing up to Orochi and protecting Otoko.

One Piece kinda does the opposite thing that Naruto does, where the women of OP are drawn in a pretty fanservicy way, but they also have plenty of agency & impact on the story. In Natuto, the women are (usually) drawn with much more realistic proportions in practical outfits, but they've got little to no impact on the story. Hell, two of the most fan favorite arcs (Arlong Park & Water 7/Enies Lobby) are about the women of the crew. They need help, but the message is clearly not "this helpless woman needs to be rescued," it's "you're never in this alone, your friends are here to help if you let them." Meanwhile, not a single one of the arcs in Naruto really centers around one of the women of the series. The closest you get is when they try to hunt down Tsunade. (I love Naruto, I just think Oda is better at writing women than Kishimoto)

A lot of my favourite moments align with yours, so I´m just gonna mention some others: 1. The indroduction of Blackbeard and the bar fight with Bellamy in Jaya. What a genius way to introduce such a major villain early on. Basically Luffy´s and Blackbeard´s ideal`s when it comes to a pirates dreams are the same but their means of reaching them is totally different, contrasted with Bellamy ideals which is the opposite, that dreams aren´t worth anything, is so amazing. Also Luffy not fighting back at first but then one-punching Bellamy after he hurt his friend is a nice recall to Shanks in Chapter One. 2. The end of Enel´s "suvivor game" in Skypea, where last five guys standing say: "We choose you, Enel!" and then Enel´s face when he realises his lightning doesn´t hurt Luffy. Priceless. 3. The Noland flashback in Skypea. Suuuuuper underrated in my opinion and not mentioned a lot in "favourite moment compilations". 4. Luffy chooses to save the Amazonian girls who where turned to stone by Boa over an escape ship to get back to his friends without hesitation or any sort of vengefulness towards Boa. Just pure happiness and gratitude that the girls who saved him are okay... It just encapsulates so well who Luffy is as a person, it´s awesome.

Hii, I'm new to your channel, so I've just watched your videos about one piece and I'm loving it. You asked what were our favorite moments and I think I've never done something like this, cuz I love every part kkkkkk, but anyways... I'm doing before watching yours not to get influenced. (I'm not a native English speaker so some things might be wrong). [obvious and yet necessary SPOILER ALERT for what happened so far (Marineford)] - One of the moments is when Luffy puts he's hat on Nami in Arlong Park Arc, is so emotional that moment because Luffy treasures that hat so much and he trusts her he's most valuable asset in order to prove her that she is part of the crew, and he will take care of her city/island/whatever that place is kkkk. - There is Brook's backstory, I love it, specially in the anime, because I love music and hearing Binks no sake played by he's old crew mates make's me cry every single time. - Robin's backstory, she is my favorite character and Water 7 is amazingly well written, the way she cries when everything is burning down water my eyes in a different way, and I'm not even starting about the "I want to live" part. - Ace's death, I just can't believe it happened, have no words to describe it. - There's also another related to "I want to live" but is the scene where Sogeking shoots the World Government's flag. - Another one is Sanji every moment kkkk (except for the Thriller bark and another one...) - "Nothing happened", I can't say anything about something that never happened - The part when Nami goes to the Weather sky Island, every time the yoyoyoi mosume-sanyo say this I laugh (don't know how to write this kkkk) - When everybody is wiped out by Kuma and Luffy is in pain hitting he's head against the ground - And I think that Chopper's hole arc is perfect. My 10 best one piece moments so far, I have others but I didn't want to spoiler you the future kkkk Long comment, but there it is. Sorry about the misspelled words and wrong grammar kkkk, Love the enthusiasm about one piece, and I'm going to look out your not one piece related content, because I love reading too :D

I'm watching the anime and I'm only on episode 32 and just finished the Don Kreig arc and I absolutely loved sanji's story. I loved I he never forgot how hunger feels like, even after so many years. It was so good! So far that's my favourite scene.

One of the best moments, in my opinion, is where Blackbeard tells luffy that dreams never end. Imagine having the, supposed, final villain of the story sit down with the protagonist and to give him a speech where not only does he reveal that he has similar ideals, but he also fully believes in Luffy's ability to make his dreams come true. Just this insane parallel between the two because even though though have different ways to approach certain situations, they both believe in the power of dreams and that anyone has the right to fight for what they want to accomplish.

Daniel is an ass, he does not care or respect manga, it is plain in his "reviews" that he is only doint it because ppl are pressuring him to, just pay attention when he talks about it and you will see...he is also woke af, as if CRT destroying movies and tv was not enough, now they want to ruin books as well

@@felipecampos3045 Dude calm down, his recent video on Sabody was decent. Reviewers like Merphy and Mark set the bar so high that you've been spoiled some just don't want to make a 60 min video discussing every intricacy of that arc. Yeah the thriller bark review was bad but some people really have massive issue against jokes related to assault, it will leave such a bad taste that enjoying anything associated to that becomes hard.

@@felipecampos3045 How is he an ass? He seems to be really liking one piece so far. He's not an ass just for pointing out some flaws or things he didn't enjoy. One piece isn't perfect and that's ok.

There are two particular moments that made me literally cry (which is quite rare): 1) when they cremate Mary 2) Ace dies in Luffys arms/lap (don't remember)... especially this scene made me cry a bunch (reminded me of my fresh breakup lol) Great video Merph! I could feel the emotions you were going through while talking and I respect you didn't cry while talking about them lol.

My favorite moment is in Enies lobby when Sogeking stands at the top of the tower and shoots Spandam and saves Robin right before they passed the gate, and we see Robin tearing as she knows who her rescue man is Also there is so much to that scene like how Usopp saw himself to be the most useless crew member but he was the only one who could do that shoot while singing

“Nothing happened” is my favorite one piece moment. Merphy I started watching your videos last year randomly and I am so glad I did. One Piece has been my favorite manga for 6 years now at least, and your passionate reviews are so great to watch. I love how much you love our crew. Thanks for bringing your fresh perspective to this community.

Honestly one of the things I love the most about this series is the incredible character introductions. I actually think the introduction of blackbeard and his crew might be my favourite moment in the entire series. Just feels like Oda slowly introducing these weird characters that mostly just feel like a way to give life to the town and like they'll have a minor role later on, and then introducing this guy who is just like Luffy and you wonder what his deal is gonna be and the the sudden realization that these are the people ace has been looking for and that they are not gonna be the good guys of this story. Worked really well for me. You know what I'm gonna just list other characters that are introduced really well. I love the way Enel is introduced of course, he's by far the most intimidating villain upon introduction and the twist with how he gets beaten works so well because of how scary he seems at first. I love Kuma just removing an antagonist and his whole demeanor upon his introduction. Sabody archipelago of course had both the introduction of the supernovas and the introduction of silvers Rayleigh. The supernovas are great since you see so little of them but everyone loves at least some of them (and all of the ones that have had a major role since then I love even more) And Rayleigh is a great use of dramatic irony, as we learn he was a part of the pirate king's crew much earlier than any of our main cast since it's told through a text box and we get to wait for the moment it's revealed to the straw hats. There's a lot of non character introduction moments that I love but I just wanted to highlight that this is something Oda does really well because he does a lot of stuff really well and therefore sometimes people forget about how good he is at one of those things.

One of my favorite moments that I don’t see on many people’s list is Luffy vs Blueno in Enie’s Lobby. I fully enjoy the moment when Blueno realizes he has suddenly being outclassed and Luffy’s barrage of attacks in gear 2. I live for those “Oh crap…” moments in media.

Buggy the Clown was the first Devil Fruit user we met besides Luffy. He was the first serious antagonist, the first who took more than one chapter for Luffy to beat. He had a connection with Shanks, and his goal is a completely different treasure from the One Piece. After his first appearance, he continues to show up sporadically, having tried to get revenge in Loguetown and met with Ace and everything. His Devil Fruit abilities are similar to Luffy's in that both are able to perform melee attacks at long-distance, but defensively opposite, since Luffy is immune to blunt force while Buggy is immune to sharp objects. And personality-wise, he and Luffy are about as opposite as it gets. No matter how far we get from our first encounter with him, Oda keeps making sure we don't forget about him. That is why, every time I reread the series, I holler when I get to Impel Down and see Luffy and Buggy fighting side by side for the first time, 'cause in a way it feels like *this* is what the entire series was building towards.

BTW Luffy didn't beat Luffy 1v1, It was Nami's help that Luffy got to defeat Buggy. Frankly, before Nami starts to distract Buggy, Luffy was having problem fighting with Buggy.
