The thing most people forget about the 360 arc mgs on WW2 tanks is the enemies infantry AT capability. Modern infantry can expect to fire AT missiles from beyond easy MG range but in WW2, AT weapons tended almost entirely to, at best, grenade throwing distance, and at worst magnetic mines you had to manually connect. A 360 MG is vital when your targets are that close. Imagine a modern version of the japanese infantry soldier with a bamboo pole and a antitank mine. You'd pray your infantry was doing their job.

Having an mg on top gives you open top special rule as far as im aware, and if thats the case, you will be destroyed if the enemy gets too close.

love the video. My favorite vehicle is sdkfz 251/21 Drilling. It is 3 light auto cannons 360 degree mounted on a Hanomag. This thing is an VET infantry killer. You are rolling 6 dice with -2 pen. It cost only 145 points a lot cheaper than the Wirbelwind. I take this vehicle in tournaments where the limit to Armor to +8. You will have to make your own model since War Lords doses not sell one.

I agree with your picks. Was expecting StuH and panzer 4 to be very high up. Also expected to see little panzer 1, panzer 2/ panzer 38(t) recon model. Super big tanks aren't worth the trouble. Though only 1 tank per army is kind of restrictive.

@@HollywoodWargaming pz38 (t) with the recon light autocannon has the exact same stats as pz 2. Recon option does not give it recce though. At least I think it doesn't, it's not specified.

Medium howitzers can throw pins on anything up to a heavy tank if fired indirect. That D3 pins isn’t something to be ignored and can force heavy tanks to rally a lot. Yeah, a 6 would be required to deal superficial damage, but those D3 pins aren’t something to be ignored.

I'd replace the Wirbelwind in this list with the armored Opel Blitz with the quad autocannons. Yes it has 7+ instead of 9+ Armour, but when it’s open topped that's fairly irrelevant, for 100 points cheaper.

May I ask why you choose the Grille above the Panzer 1 SIG 33? Essentially the same vehicle, except for the crew manned MMG. The SIG hasn't got one but is 5 points cheaper. Since MMG won't be used at least 97% of the time, I'd say you could use the 5 points for something else. I probably would. Love your video's!

No it is in he Armies of Germany book. But there are so many Tanks and SPA/SPG's in there, I can imagine missing one easily. I have the v2 version of the book, perhaps that is the issue?

Yes! First of all, warlord has a DAK supply drop box set for September. These sets usually have a ton of stuff in them for the price. Could be a good jumping off point. After that, look into getting some light tanks and recce vehicles like the 222, Panzer 1 and 2, and Opelousas.

@@HollywoodWargaming Damn! I actually just bought some models so I’m good now. I got the starter kit which I think is a really good starting point. I have a 1LT, 4 infantry squads (1 veteran, 2, 8-mans, 2, 7-mans), AT rifle team, MMG, mortar, Flak 88 and Panzer 3.

What about taking a Tiger 1 with pintle mount and fuel shortage. You can open up with 3 MMGs for 18 shots towards the end of a turn so you don't get shot while open topped.

Historically speaking you are absolutely right. But my definition of "Major Faction" for Bolt action is the 5 nations included in the main rulebook who have their own individual "Armies of..." Book. They just get more representation in the game overall which is why I consider them "Major" while France and Italy are "Minor". But I assure you Italy will be coming soon, along with France and the Finns.

I’m definitely not trying to make the case that Wirbelwinds were common, just giving some background on the German’s increasing emphasis on ground-to-air support as the war dragged on. @@HollywoodWargaming Yes but four hundred, the Panzerwaffe had none of the Wirbels, which were an SS project. meanwhile the Panzerwaffe had 49000 tanks and 44000 other armoured vehicles (the Wirbelwind as a SPAAG fits here). 400 out of over 80000 is not a regular showing.

Erwin Gaming yes but many other armored vehicles were converted into AA countermeasures. Keep in mind “armored vehicles” includes things like Sdkfz 251s and 222s

I actually use Tamiya 1/48 scale for most of my armor vehicles. Their kits are all over eBay and Amazon. Though I have other vehicles from Blitzkrieg Miniatures, Perry Minis, and Rubicon.

Yes, once when they're firing at you and once when the templates are placed after hitting.

Sorry, but if you look at page 69 in the rule book under HE, it says “once the unit has gone down, roll to hit, place the template...” there is no further mention of giving a down order after being hit, and no mention of going down under the indirect fire rules on page 71.

Hollywood Wargaming oh for sure! And as the person firing the HE, you only want them to be able to go down when you declare the target. It’s the gamble of, do I let my unit activate this turn, or suffer a full on HE blast. Great informative video, however! Love the photos
