Dayton Carter I think every brand can crap on just about every other depending on what metric you’re using to make the comparison. No M car was designed with reliability in mind, which is ironic since M cars hold their value better than any other BMW. I’m sure you’re aware that all performance cars require substantially more maintenance than their daily-driver counter parts. Just replacing the brakes on a car like this would total more than a years worth of car payments on your average car.

Even basic tune-up/maintenance gets a little expensive when you’re factoring in 10 cylinders. That is one thing I really like about my 328i with an N26 engine. Plugs and coils x4 instead of 6, 8, or 10.

Good video. I know BMW gets a lot of flack for reliability true or not, BMW'S are so advanced and really nice cars.. I like how you explained how the SMG transmission works. I'm planning on getting a BMW in the future. You said do the maintenance and repairs before things go out, that is a true statement, I use that same logic on any car brand I own.

I think it's all about finding the sweet spot for you needs in the market you're in. For instance here in Europe a great bmw for under 5k is a well taken care of E60 525d manual. It's comfortable, handles great and with a small remap pulls great with its 6 cylinder engine, and yet it's low on fuel, maintenance, insurance costs and lasts a long long time, plenty of them with over 300k miles around. Just be sure to do your research before you buy one, the ownership experience fluctuates greatly between the models and engine choices, and alas, on where you live and how much work you do yourself.
@jeremypetix44934 жыл бұрын
You’re not buying this car because you’re looking for a reliable daily driver. This is a luxury toy bought by rich folk when new and automotive enthusiasts/DIYers when in this shape. There are cheaper ways to get your adrenaline, but few are more satisfying to someone like me than fixing something as complex as this yourself and making it purr!

Thanks

I agree that FCP Euro can have higher prices than other places but it can be worth it in the long run if you’re someone planning to put a couple of hundred thousand miles on your cars due to the lifetime warranty. I haven’t paid anything but shipping costs for the past 4 years for oil changes, cabin filters, spark plugs, coils, and any other maintenance item that needs to be swapped out more often than other parts. And thats on two BMWs. Totally not worth it if you’re not keeping the vehicles long term.

Hello Nathan, LOVED the Video and trying to sort out the "ten" issues: 1) Rod bearings - confirmed 2) VANOS H.P. Pump or gears 3) VANOS engine internal to engine pressure line - confirmed 4) Throttle actuators and gear replacement (NOT associated with VANOS), but confirmed 5) Coils - confirmed 6) Oil leaks - confirmed 7) Water in ECU box....no experience, but agree and - confirmed 8) Transmission SMG H.P. Pump - confirmed 9) Clutch: SMG or MT - confirmed 10) ? I missed something Not commented on: Fuel injectors leaking or stuck-on FULL SPRAY. Results in excess oil in sump. Excess fuel and/or oil finds its way into the combustion chamber and causes "hydro lock" resulting in bent rod. Bent rod now scores the Alusil bore and trashes the pistons/bore and totals the block! I purchase TWO! S85's only to find the bore trashed due to bent rods from hydro-lock. Wishing you luck and waiting for more S85/M5/M6 info. Have many pics of my tear-down and trashed/scored bores.....Grrr but still love the S85! Mr. P (aka P-Chi on M5board)

If your going to by one just get one with these issues addressed. Remember to warm up the car all the time. I let mine warm up 15-20 min. This car with headers and straight pipe has a sound like no other. Smashing the redline and it just keeps pulling and pulling. A friend once drove it on M mode and said it was a space ship, one thing is that when it works it’s the best car and you love it and when it doesn’t it’s the biggest POS. ///M power motha....

If BMW feels they make money from people having to fix these issues, why don't they fix them at the factory by using better parts and materials? Then, just up the price of the car a couple grand. They need to address their reliability issues. Use better materials and parts.

I think you just talked 200 plus people into buying a Lexus! Hate to say it but if you were just describing the common issues of owning a Kia, you’d be proving why they are junk and not worth buying. It might be fast and it might be fun to drive but I wouldn’t put up with such issues to own it. That being said, I am looking forward to watching you do the repairs on this car but I will also be grateful that its not my problem. More proof to me that the old BMWs are the best!
