@scottmunson For the love of God! Can someone unpack for me this quirk of omitting the personal pronoun at the beginning of comments on social media? I suspect it’s a Western things and I frankly find it lame . It seems to me symptomatic of kind of mental illness. I feel the same way. The thing that jumped out to me is, Test the robot to see if it's a real woman. Creator creates a sexual element in secret to see how robot and boy subject will interact. It shows creators flawed superficial view of womanhood. Robot actually plays them both against each other and plans escape. Robot creates alliance with other oppressed female robot. This cunning action to escape a bad relationship with a determined self reliance was genius and proved that this robot was indeed as actual as a real woman. Very fluid, and cunning in planning, vicious in her resolve. It was genius.

Would recommend "Mindwalk" - a My-Dinner-with-Andre like film centered on a conversation between a physicist, a politician and a poet. The three reflect on the virtues of Cartesian/Newtonian reductionist perception versus systems-thinking. They consider how these different ways of thinking shape medicine, economics, politics and more. Their conversation explicitly raises the question, "What is life?"

In the late 70s, I was a philosophy major at a major state university and took a class, "Philosophical ideas in film and drama." It was not ONLY a great class, but that class is mostly responsible for my being a lifelong film buff. If I'm not mistaken, only one of your films was even made by that time (The Seventh Seal, which we saw), so the professor's list was quite different from yours. AND, in the 70s, there were no video stores, no VCRs, certainly no internet. The prof only had a tiny budget to bring in films--that was difficult back then--so we were pretty limited to what the university film series (which was a pretty good one) was showing that semester, and what the few indie theaters were showing. And of course what was available in the library. I learned of some great films, and I found my deepest philosophical film love, Kurosawa (we saw Rashomon and Ikiru, but you could do a top ten just from this great director). Seems like we saw acouple of Kubrick's, Truffaut's The Wild Child, and I would have to think harder about the rest. Then when The Matrix came out, I was teaching an intro philosophy class at a major state university, and some students came in on Monday morning and were like, YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS! IT'S JUST WHAT WE'RE READING ABOUT IN DESCARTES! One more little anecdote. Often when I taught a philosophy of science class, I would use What the Bleep (Do We Know). Yeh, i know, it's awful. God awful. I have my students watch it without telling them what i think about it. GREAT DISCUSSIONS are invariably stimulated from this horrible film.

Hello. (I am writing with the help of a translator). I am sure that you are familiar with the film "philosophers" (After the Dark) 2013. I wonder if there are people who can understand it. According to the comments, I have been looking for more than a year for those who will help me disassemble the second bunker and see what I did not see ... But!... I didn't find a single person. I understand that the film is quite complicated, but is it really that complicated? Everyone sees only a superficial meaning and when you give them hints, they don't even try to think. There is one demagogy everywhere

I was curious to see where "Pi" would place. For me, it's one of the best philosophical films. But the most important film for me is missing here. "K-PAX" - I still think about it today. For me, the film was not about whether one of the characters was telling the truth or lying and the difficulties in assessing the accuracy of these statements. it was a film that raises the question of whether one can believe another being regardless of rationality. I wondered if there is such a thing as a pure Aristotelian form of faith, the mere act of faith without a subject it applies to. By the way, "Stalker" surprised me, I did not expect to see it on this list. Special thanks for including "Donnie Darko". I recommend "Primer", similar theme but a MUCH more complicated timeline puzzle and a very strong reference to determinism and free will.

@@andreasboe4509 Hi, thanks :D My favorite picks that are not super popular but are very good: Movies: Dark City (simply amazing), Ink (2009), Moon (2009) (dark, but interesting), Apollo 18 (intense creepy space horror), Brazil, The Abyss (1989), The Thing (sci-fi horror), Sphere (1998), Source Code (2011), the Ring series (Japanese version, not the US remake), Europa Report, Old Boy (Korean movie, very nicely done), Event Horizon, Eraserhead, The Man from Earth (2007, simple and low budget but interesting), Mr.Nobody On my list to watch: Coherence, Pandorum, A Tale of Two Sisters, Upstream Color and Timecrimes. Books: Diaspora by Greg Egan (it's amazing, I plan to read it again), The Invincible by S. Lem (very hardcore sci-fi), Deathworld series by H. Harrison, Altered Carbon by R.K. Morgan (the book, not the Netflix adaptation), Timeline by M. Crichton, and The Road by C. McCarthy. Visual novels: There's a lot of amazing stuff, but it's a very niche medium. If you're up for it, you can investigate this by yourself. Just a couple of anime to start with (there are tons of amazing anime!): Steins;Gate (I read the visual novel but the anime must also be good. In the anime, they probably present one of the VN story routes), Code Geass, Angel Beats, Cowboy Bebop, Cyberpunk. If you want more, check out Gigguk's KZbin channel

Bergman is the safest choice on the list. But what about The Magus, and the incandescent Claire's Knee, which challenge the adequacy of our conceptions of explanation and narrative themselves? The latter is also a much-needed antidote to one of the fondest conceits of intellectuals, that intelligence and morality are somehow linked. In fact, they are on completely different continua, and the criteria for evaluating where any given individual happens to be situated on these continua are different too.

I would add Moneyball, which brings philosophical pragmatism to baseball. This is explicit in the use of statistical analysis by Bill James (no relation). C.S. Peirce was one of the founders of the discipline.

Not a film, but an anime, Steins;Gate, my absolute favorite anime. Deeply philosophical and a total mindf&*k of an anime, as well as exploring the intricacies of time travel, including string theory and the Butterfly Effect. BTW, Matrix and Devil's Advocate are two of my favorites as well.

I think Stalker is an absolutely BEAUTIFUL film (aestetically I mean) and wouldn't benefit at all by adding SFX. Likewise imo a modern remake of Dinner with André would be inappropiate considering André Gregory and Wallace Shawn are not only the actors but also the writers of the film - it's their actual dialogue we're following
