To add to the use of Rum (alcohol) to water to make it drinkable: Mainly Spanish hospitals in 1600s had doctors and assistants who were catholic, They "blessed" their hands after surgery on one person before doing surgery (usually amputation) on other patients, Had supposedly double the survival rate and no one could figure it out at the time why... I can confirm the earring bit to pay for ones funeral. To this day, on a former Dutch island before it became a polder. The people 'on' (even though it is not an island anymore) Urk usually wear a gold earring for the very reason mentioned.
