@guiwhiz5 жыл бұрын
@harold mccoy Umm... you do realize John Stockton averaged a double-double for his career . . . . a 20 YEAR career, right? 8 of those 20 years he averaged less than 30 minutes per game... and still averaged a double-double for his career. Also he averaged 14.5 assists per game, 3 rebounds per game (only on other point guard not named Magic Johnson had 3 rebounds per game that year), 2.65 steals, and 17.5 pts in one season. No one else has even come close to that stat line. In the NBA that IS a transcendent player who took over a game whenever he wanted. 14.5 is 30 pts AND he dropped in 17.5 per game that season. That is 47 points production per game out of the PG position. On a team that averaged less than 100 per game that season. He was literally half the offense by himself. Oh did I forget to mention his assist/TO ratio was nearly FIVE TO ONE that year. That is literally insane. No one else is even close. People talk about Magic Johnson and no doubt he was a better 'player' since he could play any position, but he played an average of 4+ minutes more per game. Give those 4 minutes to 'Stock' and who knows what his numbers would have looked like. Magic averaged slightly more assists per game but remember he played only during his physical prime and was a starter pretty much from day one. Stock didn't start until his 4th season. We won't even get into the difference in the 'supporting cast' of Laker's Showtime crew vs. Utah Jazz and ... well... Karl Malone and that's pretty much the only other All-Star on that squad for most of those years. 10 time All-Star (and remember he only averaged more than 30 min per game for 11 seasons; which, basically, means every year he started... he made the All-Star team) 9 time NBA assist leader (ditto . . . . he starts... pretty much he leads the NBA in assists) 5 time all NBA Defensive team (only JKidd with 9 in 19 seasons and Gary 'the Glove' Payton with 9 in 17 seasons) putting him third in appearances by a Point Guard (Kobe Bryant had 12... unreal... I know right!) 182 Playoff games (that is two+ SEASONS of NBA playoff basketball) 15,806 assists (1st by a mile) 3,265 steals (1st by a mile)

@MixedTapeVideosNBA9 жыл бұрын
+Mark Alford We went back and forth on this, actually. Different sites list them at different positions. The main reason for that is because they were more like combo guards that played multiple positions. Not only that but the positions weren't as defined back then. You could probably count them as either a point guard or shooting guard, but since we've always listed them as shooting guards in our previous videos, we kept them at that position for these videos in order to maintain consistency.

This is the kind of thing you can look up on Basketball Reference, which lists what position they actually played most in any given season. They name Iverson, West, and Robertson as shooting guards: Iverson was a shooting guard in just over half of his seasons; West was a shooting guard in 2 out of 14 seasons; and Robertson was a point guard in EVERY SINGLE SEASON he played. So yeah, you're right based on what position he actually played. But... I think they're just trying to move players around so that the better players end up on a list, and probably they felt they didn't have as many top shooting guards as point guards.

Mark Price is not just one of the most underrated PG's of all time. He's one of the most underrated basketball players of all time. I see a lot of players get love that couldn't hold Price's jock. He did his thing in the all Star games too against the best. Not to mention back to back 3 point champ. He's one of the few that's part of the 50, 40, 90 club.

I am Mexican-American and emulate this guys game on the neighborhood court. I even made a makeshift shirt and with a permanent marker wrote on the back STOCKTON 12. Young players don't know him and don't care about assists. I school them with many assists. I love seeing their frustration when I give up the ball for an easy assist and basket. I have won many games in the hood because of my assists. But they will never notice in the hood that assists still wins game too. I know that for the most part it was the fundamental assist that won those games. Assists are just one part of the fundamentals next to rebounds, defense, block outs, mid range shot and aggressive play. All lost now for the stupid 3pointer. Also, we need more Mexican-American players in the NBA .Many of us could play and assist just as good as Stockton, Nash, Paul but we get passed by for the white or black player with same skills. I have seen it happen to high school kids and middle school kids they just get bypassed with a bad perception that a black or white player play better. Just look at March Madness and see how many Mexican or Hispanic players you see. NONE. NBA. NONE. Just the facts. College Latino coaches and staff practically NONE. And no crap about Mexicans being too short because there are many 6',6'1, 6'2 and 6'3 Mexican-American players that play with all those fundamentals but get bypassed. Can we at least have an Asian American Jeremy Lin moment in the NBA? The Sage

upgraded 1. Magic Johnson- I don't know what any point guard player could possibly do to dethrone Magic Johnson. He excelled basically at all 5 positions of the game. The only player that would have done it was LeBron James if LeBron simply played the point guard position most of his career. 2. John Stockton- Greatest Pure PG player of all time. No question. Side note: Should Stockton actually be ranked behind Oscar and Curry?? I guess you can make an argument there. If you are among those people that are going to give flack about LeBron not being better than Jordan due to the amount of ring success, and his longevity simply "padding" his stats, than you can in no way, shape or form, put Stockton above Oscar and Steph Curry. If you are one of those debaters, then Stockton shouldn't be number 2 on the list. Think about that ;) However, I am not one of those people that is on that side of the argument table. (Though I do rank Michael Jordan as the GOAT) Thus, Stockton sits rightly at #2. 3. Big O- It took about 4 decades after this man for people to be able to witness something they thought they would never see again achieved by a player) 4. Steph Curry- Revolutionized the game with his 3 point shooting. 2nd greatest shooter of all time. (Sorry, Pistol Pete would have godly numbers if the 3 point line was in existence longer than his very last season. To me, Pistol is the greatest shooter of all time) Why is Steph below the Big O? As we have clearly seen in every Finals appearance, Steph Curry becomes a shell of himself. If it weren't for his other teammates during his first NBA championship, and then adding KD to that roster, he basically would currently right now at this time of this comment be seen as a choke artist in the finals. Moreso than LeBron James. 5. Jason Kidd- Why above Zeke? 3 Finals appearances. 2 back to back with the type of teammates he had was insane. Regardless being in the East. He literally had no big to play along with. Which greatly affected his Finals chances due to opposition for those two years having Shaq and Duncan in the 2nd appearance. Personally, he is the 2nd greatest point guard defensive player ever behind Gary to go along with being 2nd in assists and steals all time. Outside of Magic Johnson, no other point guard was greater at making his teammates a hell of a lot better than what they really were. (Though Magic did have some hall of fame talents around him throughout the 80s. Kidd finally got his time when teaming up with an actual Big who also is definitely a hall of famer--Dirk) Kidd was a true magician as a pg. with a very high IQ as a basketball player...Not so much as a coach. 6. Zeke- yea, he beat MJ. Let's pretend that the 80's era Jordan Bulls team roster were almost as good as the 90's Bulls rosters for some reason. Also, his short amount of time does hurt him a little. He's like the Lynn Swann of the NBA. 7. Bob Cousy- Ahead of his time. But his actual period of playing basketball makes it hard to compare to later generations. 8. Steve Nash- No rings, No Finals appearances compared to the top 7. 9. Chris Paul- No rings, No Finals appearances. His dribbling and passing skills are the sole reason he surpasses The Glove as a greater point guard. 10. Gary Payton- The greatest point guard defensive player of all time.

Born in LA 1960, lived there from 85-09, went to Laker games in both The (Fabulous) Forum and Staples Ctr., wore either 42 (Worthy) or 0 (Woolridge) during my city league play in LA, have been a faithful Laker fan even during the down years (not too many of those ;).) and I have to agree with 713anand, Isiah Thomas was the best for, at the very least, the 3 years of 87-88, 88-89, 89-90 and maybe even a year (or two lol) sometime before that 3 year run and definitely ('schooled' lol) gave Stockton & Magic fits and not too many other point guards could do that as regularly as Isiah did, sure, Magic won MVP/Championship in 87 and Stockton's stats may have been stellar (MVP level) during those years but Thomas' scoring and intangibles were the difference which translated into back to back championships (almost 3 peat) and yes, the likes of GP The Glove, Kevin Johnson, Mark Jackson, Mark Price, and others would have there moments embarrassing Magic &/or Stockton, but not as routinely as did Isiah.

I grew up in Utah with the Stockton to Malone Jazz. And I might be persuaded to agree with you depending on how we define a PG. John was, in my opinion, the greatest PURE PG of his era (I don't bother with all time rankings, preferring to consider players against those of their era instead. Since Stockton and Magic played in the same era we can justly compare them). But Magic was the best player to be listed as PG on an NBA stat sheet. And I would love to see how Oscar Robertson and John would have been compared had they played against each other. Interestingly, for teammates Big O had a young Kareem (still Lew at the time), Magic had a more polished and mature Kareem, and John had the Mailman. Since there is little question (to me) that Jabar was the better player than Malone overall that affects how I view Magic vs Stockton. And while there is some merit to the argument that Magic got his rings before MJ and Pippen became icons in Chicago and left everyone in their wake...Magic was still Magic. So based on what seems to be their definition for the ranking process I still have Magic above John. But it is a great discussion and they were both a joy to watch play.

Stockton had one hall of famer he played with his whole career... magic had at least 3 or 4 easily ( Wilkes,worthy, Kareem ect. ) just to name a few... so I see the Malone argument but I feel like it’s a moot point... put Stockton around a team like that for 19 years putting up numbers in his peak like 17pts 14 ast and 3 steals while shooting like over 50% from the field people would really be calling him the goat , he would have to start putting rings on his feet

Jason Kidd - he can assist, shoot and rebound.

He's had more than 1 great season he just only had 1 MVP season I understand curry has a lot of bandwagon fans now but don't let that blind you from how good this dude is right now man I'd take curry right now over Nash in his prime n wouldn't think about it AT ALL js

Isaiah doesn't belong in the top ten. Hella overrated.
The combination of Stockton and Malone was, IMHO, the best basketball I have ever seen.
@guiwhiz4 жыл бұрын
Well I certainly loved watching them play, but for 'team basketball' it is really really hard to eclipse the Celtics and Lakers 'top to bottom'.
@factChecker014 жыл бұрын
@@guiwhiz , That may be true for the entire team. That is more complicated to watch; too much for me. I liked the simplicity and effectiveness of the two-man pick and roll.
@guiwhiz4 жыл бұрын
@@factChecker01 Yeah that was certainly true and when you consider the other team KNEW exactly what those two were going to do but couldn't manage to stop it? Genius at work....
@factChecker014 жыл бұрын
@@guiwhiz , I agree -- genius. I think that genius made it look simple. I don't know enough to spot the details of how they did it, but the fact that no one else could do as well tells me that it was a lot harder than it looked.
@valentino86254 жыл бұрын
Sadly, the combination of Jordan and Chicago Bull stopped them (It 's joking)
