Alex, your videos are great. Lots of information on a lot of towns in a compact format. Provides so much details without the fluff others add to their videos. I look forward to these videos and appreciate you putting these together.

Excellent stuff Alex. It's getting to the point now where Rushden, Higham ferrers, Irchester and Irthlingborough are in urgent need of a shared station and they have been talking about putting one back at Irchester for several years.

Great video Alex, that’s a shocking statistic about the lack of rail connections in Northamptonshire.

I haven't commented until now, but I've watched all of your videos and find them completely interesting and absolutely marvellous. Your voice goes really well for the videos and is very clear and was wondering where is your accent from? I love travelling and exploring and your videos are champion of this and no one else comes close for it. I like Northamptonshire and find every town in this marvellous county interesting to visit and is one of the better counties in the country and the architecture arguably the best in the country. Northampton, Wellingborough and Irthlingborough must have came close for consideration, Northampton has some marvellous buildings, Irthlingborough is a nice little town and I've not been to Wellingborough, but I hear it's very nice.
@AlexinGreatBritainАй бұрын
Thanks for the kind words, I appreciate it! I'm from Lincolnshire. Wellingborough's like a smaller version of Northampton - a few beautiful buildings, but largely drowned out by modern development. If I were to extend the list I'd probably put Irthlingborough 11th and Wellingborough 12th.

Great video! Thank you! I live in the county and it's good to see some recognition on YT. There are only six railway stations (excepting heritage lines) in the whole of Northamptonshire: Northampton, Long Buckby, Kings Norton, Wellingborough, Kettering and Corby. Please correct me if I have missed any! Is this a record low in stations-per-county, please - except Rutland with only one (Oakham)?
@AlexinGreatBritainАй бұрын
Ah interesting! Well besides Rutland as you say, and without checking, my thoughts are going straight to Herefordshire on that one. Maybe a topic for a future video right there...

@@AlexinGreatBritain Great idea! Many thanks for your kind response.

It was probably the lack of railway connections which preserved these fine towns from the ravages of the Industrial Revolution. Like their near neighbour Buckingham, they were already prosperous (often due to the wool trade) before mechanised rail travel. The canal system was all they needed to transport produce. The local landowners (who often made all the decisions on development) not only saw no reason why the railway was helpful to their business, but also feared that easy connections to cities would lead to an influx of less attractive industries and less desirable workers.

I was born in Brackley and grew up there. You walked by my old school. Brackley Castle ( now Tesco's) was the place where the original Magna Carta was drawn up and where all the knights congregated before marching on London. As with any negotiation, the original Magna Carta was rejected so the merry knights trotted out of town for a quick re-write in Romsey Marshes. If you think about it, the first draft in any negotiation is always rejected. The doomsday book quoted it as a lawless town full of footpads and sheep rustlers.
@AlexinGreatBritainАй бұрын
Well that Tesco's has one heck of a claim to fame then!

Ive been waiting for this video for a while and i wasnt disappointed. Id correctly guessed the number 1. But it was no contest really. Oundles stunning. Regarding cities, Northamptonshire used to have peterborough. It must be the only county to lose a city to a neighbouring historic county Shame about the lack of train stations in Northants. Its definitely annoying. The county has like three parallel north south lines which dont connect. But there's signs of its railway heritage everywhere Thrapstons old railway viaduct is lovely but wouldnt recommend walking on it. Its a bit smelly up there.
@AlexinGreatBritainАй бұрын
Thanks! And yeah, that's the other aspect of the Beeching Cuts - like it never occurred to the guy that people might want to travel within their own county, rather than just to London!

they all seem to have names that are a bit of a mouthful 😁 nice enough places with some fantastic old architecture, but they do look rather dull to live in
@williamc6774Ай бұрын
Not entirely accurate re railways! It is only this list of 10 that lacks stations, the county itself does not lack railways! Oh, and BTW, Rushden Station still exists and operates as a station, albeit a preserved one.
@AlexinGreatBritainАй бұрын
I said "not one of the 10 towns you've seen here has a railway station". I never denied the existence of Northampton station, Kettering station etc. You can check the video again if you like. As for heritage railways, they're nice and all, but not very practical being as they only run on special occasions.

Northamptonshire is being trashed and turned into one huge housing estate. There is no end in sight. As for Northampton. flooded with immigrants. These videos will be irrefutable evidence of how beautiful the "Rose of the Shires" used to be.
