Very good video. I have lived alone now for 10+ years. My favourite thing about living alone is being able to do what you want, within reason of course. I'm an AFOL (Adult Fan Of Lego) and always wanted a lego city, but never had the room. So one day I decided to get rid of every piece of lounge furniture I had, shove a work table on one wall, and a big table right in the middle which now has my city on it. One of the factors that made me decide to do this was that I barely ever get guests/visitors so, the sofa was mostly redundant anyway, I am on the PC mostly so the sofa ended up as a dumping ground.

You hit on an international theme. I live in Canada and I agree with most of the items on your list - especially the portions section. (I'm 70 and live in my own condo with power and lights in condo fees.) That being said, I found out recently that I'm not as independent as I pride myself on being. I had a tumor removed from my head three weeks ago. All the people I had little contact with, showed up at my bedside and I was GLAD TO SEE THEM. Go figure! All's well now. Great video.

You can freeze fresh food in single portions. Also eggs usually last longer than the date printed - pop in a mug of water, if it floats chuck it, if it doesn't cook it. You forget enjoying total silence, which is now so rare in my house.

I do miss being able to roll in early hours in the morning without having to tip toe around not to wake anybody. Followed by the morning guilt trip from the missus, "you were drunk last night and woke us all up, why you get so drunk". I only go out like once a year calm down! Lol

I don't know how serious this video is but I felt implored to reply with my stellar suggestions. Solution to problem number one would be to drop your standards and just hoover once a fortnight. Eggs last alot longer than the date printed, you can check the freshness by putting one in a bowl of water, if it floats it's bad if it sinks it's good. I've been doing this for years and it's completely fine. Washing dishes is a miserable waste of time, Invest in a small counter top dishwasher they actually aren't that expensive. Cook meals in bulk such as bolognaise or chilli that can be portioned into tuppaware and frozen, just remember to put it in the fridge in the morning before you go to work to defrost, you could actually microwave from frozen but it's more hassle. You've probably already thought of this but you can always get stuff delivered to your workplace. Don't bother putting the spider in the glass that's too scary, just hit it with a rolled up newspaper, hard enough to kill it but not so hard that you leave spider juice on the wall. It's a bit tongue in cheek but there's a lot of truth in the video too. I was quite new to living alone when I filmed this and so it was all a bit of a shock. Since then, I've got much more used to it. Thanks for taking the time to write some fantastic tips. Very much appreciated!! I'll buy some mince tomorrow and fill up my freezer with chilli! The spider tip sucks though. Everyone knows that killing spiders is against the arachnophobic's code of conduct.

Pro tip: If you store eggs in the fridge (pointy end down) they well be good for about 2-3 months. Also, Cheese, even if the surface of the cheese has become hard or moldy you could just cut the bad parts away and then enjoy the rest of a more aged cheese. And of course, keep it in the fridge, you are a civilized mamal.

When I left home at the age of 15 I lived in a bedsit in Norwich with a rent of 25 shillings per week. I was earning £4/10 shillings per week. The bedsit had a single ring Belling hob and no fridge. The first week I lived off tins of baked beans and cooked toast in front of an electric fire. Then I discovered vesta meals for one which cost half a crown or 2/6d in old money. Yes it was lonely but I made friends with people who lived in the other rooms. For loch I went to the cockle stall in Norwich market. Breakfast was usually cornflakes but I had to ask the landlady to keep the milk in the fridge during summer. In winter I put the milk on the window sill outside. My most expensive outlay was buying a suit of credit which cost me 15 shillings per week. At the weekend I could go to a disco and have a single rum and coke and that was all I could afford if I wanted to save up. Life got better when I came to London and rented a room.

Top tip: rather than burn bacon and have to wash up have breakfast for one at a local cafe. It will probably work out cheaper as you won't set the kitchen alight and has no impact on your home in terms of fuel, lighting etc. And you won't have eggs left over! Glad I could help... :)

Bacon cooking tip: Start with the bacon in a bit of water. The water of course evaporates but the bacon partially cooks enough during this stage that it then magically begins to brown without burning. Works with spiders as well.

A foolproof way of getting rid of unwanted spiders (and other insects for that matter, like annoying mosquitoes) is to suck them into a vacuum cleaner. I've done it many times and they've never crawled / flown out :D

In lived on my own since 17 and have always been rather messy, I only tidy up when I have guests. Iv only ever had 3 new things delivered which was a cupple of sofas and my washing machine. I haven't had a working fridge freezer and eat anything reduced or on sale. I always have more food then I eat but my composting worms thrive off it which is good because I grow my own Veg. I eat out of what I cook in and only use plates or bowls with guests becaues I can be bothered to wash up. I finally have a wall of clouths washing filling half my kitchen.

Jake this is going to be a long and serious comment. First, man was not meant to be alone. In the olden days when most people were married by their mid twenties, women were the center of the home, keeping everything in order and cooking for the family. Their natural role of nurturer and helpmeet ensured that the family was healthier and happier. I understand that there will probably be many negative replies to these sentiments, and I may be deemed old fashioned. However, for family life to be balanced and individual physical, mental and emotional life to be strong, we need to live in family groupings. Marriage between a man and woman is ordained of God, and the best way to build a stable society. The best thing you could do is marry a woman who believes in keeping a home and having children, nurturing and educating them to be good members of society. Living alone may seem to have certain benefits, but ultimately true growth comes from learning to love someone more than we love ourselves. Selflessly raising a family helps us mature and progress in ways we cannot understand as single people doing our own thing. If you feel tired standing at the sink doing dishes at 33 years old, you might want to seriously consider muesli for breakfast. Heart disease is prevalent among people who eat fried animals. More green leafy vegetables and less oil, fat, dairy etc will give you more energy. Animal food is for hard winters and not working indoors at the computer all day. You will also lose any excess weight and sleep better. If the government gives tax breaks to single people, that means you are being governed by those who no longer believe in marriage and I would move to America immediately. With all its problems, it is still the last bastion of freedom on earth, and there's no bedroom tax here either. Anyway, these are just things I have learned in my 65 years on earth. Jake the use by date on eggs is based on them not being kept in a fridge. They last longer in a fridge. Also, they may still be usable after the use-by date even if kept out of the fridge. The way to tell if they are OK to use is to put them in water. If they sink to the bottom they are still fresh. If they stand upright but still touch the bottom, they're past their peak but still ok. If they float they are off!

The bacon burned because the heat under the pan was too high. We have a dedicated small non-stick egg pan with a good lid (£10 in a supermarket), it makes life much simpler as getting eggs right is an art form. If you have a reasonable amount of oil in the pan (1/4") you can use a dessert spoon to pour oil over the egg to set it. Voíla no turning! A thin metal bendy fish slice makes handling eggs easy. People will say you can't use metal with non-stick, well fuck 'em! With a tight fitting lid the egg pan can be left with on the hop for weeks without changing the oil, afterwards if you put the lid on while the pan is hot, it is self sterilising. We had a BnB for fifteen years and estimate I have cooked approx 25k - 30k eggs.

Hahaha living alone is awesome. You just need to tweak your skills and hire a cleaner to hoover. I buy big packs of meat and divide it up and freeze to save money. Electric pressure cookers help make things fast and easy. I also use a counter top convection oven instead of using the big range... way less electricity. Eggs last way longer than the "best before" date. A best before date and a expiry date are 2 different things all together. Lots of things last far longer than a best before date says. Batch cook on the weekends so you don't have crappy freezer meals to microwave. Everyday you cook enough for 4 people then you have 2 options...the next weekend you cook something different and multiply your options. It is a organizational issue. Most of your cons were nobody is complaining at you. Now maybe you can find someone more compatible. BUT, if I saw a vid like this where someone was bashing a ex publicly... I would have nothing to do with them because if they do it to someone else... they will do it to you. I listen when someone takes the time to show me who they really are. I have one dating rule... only date people who will treat you in a way you would want your daughter or son treated in that same situation. Go find yourself that person.... and BE that person for someone else.

Hi Jake, Tip no. one Buy a half size DISHWASHER that sorts out the least enjoyable thing about eating. Tip no. two to much bacon and egg and fat, fat, fat will kill you early and burned bacon a big no, no., cooked right in moderation ok. I can do my You Tube videos as My dear wife had the big cancer and did not make it, but if she had would she have let me have my train set on the dinning room table not a chance but would I swap you bet I would so value your solitude but if you can share your life with some one grab it with both hands and all those things you were saying will be forgotten. Batch cook your home made meals then portion and freeze so when you get home from work all you have to do is defrost and heat in the mic or defrost the night before by sticking in the fridge overnight. For example if you make a Bolognese sauce 500g of mince a tin of toms, 1/2 bottle of Passata, a large onion, diced carrot and sliced mushrooms, fresh basil, seasoning and beef stock cubes to your taste cook everything till cooked then simmer for 45 mins to bring the flavours out will give you 4-5 portions. Put them in containers, Freeze then defrost when needed then all you have to do is cook some pasta of choice. Easy. Then mix it up by making some chilli con carne then you can have an easy taco night or burritos or Nachos. Mix it up even more with Moussaka, Shepard's pie, meatballs in tom sauce, lamb hot pot, coq au vin and you will have variety for a month or 2 of tasty, healthy home made meals. In the words of the legendary Arthur Daley, The world is you lobster.

Too funny... The expiration date on thing for the most part is just the date that it at peak. It can still be used long after that date before starts to get funky and or dangerous to eat. I use the date as a guideline on eggs, for example , for how i will use them... Before expiration date +/- 2days. Breakfast food. After expiration date +5days baked in something. +2weeks they go into the garden to feed the soil

How is it cheaper to live by yourself? You get a 25% discount on council tax but you don't have someone to split that with, and yes you'll use a little less electrictiy and water but again you don't have someone to take half the cost (and the bills definitely aren't halved!) Also did you not have to wash after yourself when you lived with someone else haha
