Learn what makes you lonely. I would get distracted on a phone call or movie and my house would get dark in the evening. The dark made me super sad and lonely. I got in the habit of turn my lamps on really early so my house never gets dark. The warm lamp light is so cozy and safe. Sometimes you can’t fight the lonely feel but sometimes you can.

I put my lamps on a timer. So they are switched on before dusk, then turn them selves off, say about 1am. Welcoming, cosy, secure

I can relate to above comment: I love this big flickering candle I have with a timer that comes on at the same time every night and indicates to me, "Ok, now it's time to mellow out and wind down for bedtime."🌛

I've been divorced for 26 years after being married for 18 years. I truly love living on my own and sharing my house with 2 cats. I tell people, "The best part of being on my own is that everything's up to me. The worst part of being on my own is that everything's up to me." I have become so independent and capable and have learned to do so many things, mostly out of necessity. Big tip: don't be aftaid to eat out on your own or go to the movies on your own. Sure, it'll feel awkward the first few times, but it's so freeing.

I started crying within 3 minutes of watching this video. I thought I was doing a bad job. I thought I was failing. I thought because I am hungry that I'm not doing this right. But you helped me understand how big of a deal the first few months of moving out alone will be, you helped me feel so much better and cleared the guilt about being lonely or a little rocky with priorities. I cannot say thank you enough. Thank you for saying it's okay to feel the way I'm feeling. I don't feel alone anymore.. I feel like I'm doing just fine..

@@sharonbeers4621thank you for saying that. I'm not looking forward to being alone, but my husband sleeps more and more these days, and my parents are both gone now. I had to spend all my time caring for family, and soon it will just be me, with no friends or family. So I need to find a way to change that sooner than later. Thank you so much for the tips, I (34 M)got dumped by my gf 2 months ago from a 6 year relationship. I had to live with my ex for those 2 months because I was struggling to find a place for myself. Today, I was finally able to move out. I moved everything, and after everything was done, I just bawled my eyes out, like ugly crying, I probably didn't cry like that since I was a child, also a day before moving out I found out that she started dating with others about half a month ago. It hit me pretty bad and since I was living with her and other roomies for the good part of a decade and I'm suddenly living alone and the fact that she's seeing other people just joined forces and danced the polka on my psyche. Now I'm in my new bed that I built in 4 hours and watching your videos, and they really help. So thank you again I will follow your advice.

Excellent tips. I'm not sure I could have come up with half of those at your age. I'm decades older than you, and many of those tips still apply. I didn't hear you mention books, but those have been a lifesaver for me. Not only do I learn (I read non-fiction), but I can get into a discussion with the authors through journaling.

This video is confirming because I am the only one I know that do this. I have lived alone for many years and I have meticulously scheduled everything. This is something I have been doing since middle school. Even though I only follow through with half of what I write down, having a schedule keeps me productive. I even schedule little things like washing my hair or picking out my clothes for the next five days. I've sometimes been late to work because I had to make a decision before work on what clothes to wear that I did not pre set. I also agree with the content creator about chores. I only do chores for one hour.. Then I recontinue cleaning the nexy day. Like the content creator I'm least likely to get overwhelmed when I break down things I don't like into small segments one at a time. When I was in school I hated studying so I would only study each subject for one hour then come back to that subject later. If I didn't do that I would day dream and not focus intently on my subject of study. I didn't have Focus Mate in the 1990's but I did have the Library for studying. If people around me were studying then it was easy for me to study. Same thing for working out: If I saw other people at the gym working out then it was easy for me to work out. The gym was better then working out at home. This is a good video weather you live alone or with roommates or live with your family. Some parts of this video is good advice for having order and structure in your day to day life.

Ha ha. I talk to myself all the time. Well also the cats as well. I’m kind of a “living alone” veteran (and a former latch key kid lol) but lately I’ve just been feeling like interesting and intelligent convo is hard to find. And sometimes you can just feel like I should have more friends. People might say you need to be more “social” but also solitude can become one of the best friends you’ve ever had. But my background was fleeing toxic relationships tho and it’s truly better to be “alone” than with bad people…for the sake of just not being alone.

I enjoy living alone for the most part. As a social introvert, I realise I only get scared when I feel helpless and feel, if I can't be self sufficient then life is hell. One, become lonely because one can't make many social friends so it is a habit. But also, one starts enjoying the independence of alone space, but what gets to you is when u feel helpless. That's the scary part. And then the problem is u just cannot become social and when u try u feel uncomfortable or bored. Then u come back home and are happy....but suddenly a bug or pest is in the house, or a life situation that involves getting out and dealing with people and situations u don't know how to tackle and suddenly you feel HELPLESS AND LONELY and invisible with no support group. So now my conclusion is...if living alone was without fear or stress....most people will enjoy living alone. But fear and helplessness drives a lot of people to be around people. It's just a safety in numbers. Being with someone who doesn't really pay attention to u can also be very lonely and worst... isolating.

Going through the first rough breakup of my life i have a few months to live with my ex partner before i have to for the first time in my life as a 24 year old living on my own and someone who also struggles with abandonment issues, chronic loneliness, and severe anxiety. This process is really hard already and im trying to make this transition as easy and comfortable as possible.

As an introvert being a lone wasn’t really my problem what did scare me at first was bill payments so I’d recommend to budget. I had to cut back on buying stuff and only buy things I need. The neighbour tip is good thing because it shows your respectful and in an emergency they can help you.

I'm probably your oldest viewer in distress! I'm 57 and have never been alone but heading there QUICKLY. My mom is gone now. We lived with her for 6 years after our special needs daughter moved out of state. My husband is mostly bedridden. We moved into a small apartment complex (4 units) and have nothing to do with any of them. (After thinking about what you said, holidays are coming. So I think I'll make some Italian treats and use the opportunity to hand them out. Hopefully it will help.) I don't know how much longer I'll have my husband, but after that I'm on my own, so I'm trying to figure out how to navigate my life. So, thank you for sharing your thoughts, experiences and encouragement to all of us. Praying you have a lovely rest of your life!

I love this video, and will return to it frequently. I went from living with a big family to living with a smaller family to living with multiple roommates to being a mother figure to someone's kids for a short while. Now I'm preparing for my first time alone at 27 years old. I'm excited, and a little nervous. I've got my emotional support animal, my home defense tool, and some trusted local friends and siblings so I think I'm all set. One bit of advice I want to talk about though. When dealing with cars, please don't let your mechanic or dealership know you don't know about cars. They may charge you more for not knowing what you're supposed to pay for. Ex: I had a mechanic try to charge me for 3 visits on a transmission issue but I was able to watch them do literally nothing. I started putting marks on all my bolts and anything that moved so I could prove they hadn't been touched. Got a full workup for free after that.

Excellent advice--very practical. One variation on giving a key to a neighbor is to get a padlock-type key box (where you have to line up a dial or type a code to open it). Give that to the neighbor and if there's an emergency, you can give them the code. I'm sure the boxes can be broken into, but it's just a little more secure if you're unsure who comes and goes from their apartment, or if the neighbor might be a little too eager to check on you. :)

@@stacyjaye6350 My question would be, even if the neighbor is nice, who visits them? Does the super-cool gal next door whom you think you can rely on have a sketchy boyfriend? What about her cousin Joe who just got out of jail, does he drop by?

Some cities have a professional private security service that can keep a copy of your key and go in to do what's needed. These firms are bonded and insured, often staffed by retired police officers or veterans. My security service provides a record of visits, which can be useful if an insurance claim or police report is needed. Worth considering!

My husband left 2 years ago. I'm now trying to come up for air. This was helpful. I don't have any friends or family near. I do know one neighbor. I'm struggling. I will say for the ladies don't garden at night last summer I was watering my plants and got bit by a snake at midnight.... Had to call an ambulance go to the hospital alone stayed alone had the Uber home because I don't know anyone. I don't know how to make friends... I'm 49 and was married for 20 years. My kids are in a different state. I can't just go home and be a burden on them.

Amazing- I was just eating and flipping through KZbin suggestions and this video was one - my former spouse divorced me in 2015 and announced her engagement via Fakebook right after divorce court. It was a very hard transition - my guy friends from church ⛪️ supported me with prayer 🙏 and understanding. I’m 59 now and still living alone with anxiety, some depression and trust issues (especially concerning women). After scrolling, I see that there are three other guys that have commented - wonder how many others would if they weren’t afraid of what others would think about them. Thanks for ideas - I came home thinking about how can I make life more than just work, food, shower and sleep- repeat every day… like the main character in the movie “Nobody” 😕

Here's a few things that work for me: 1. Picking up a hobby or interest (maybe something you used to do and would like to get back to doing). Also gives you something to connect about with others. 2. Doing volunteer work, (I do a few short-term things, like box office shift at local comedy festival, helping out at co-op shop's summer fair. I don't get tied down into a regular or long term commitment with this, and have the enjoyment of meeting new people, having fun, and helping). 3. Inviting a friend/family member for a meal/snack in my home on the regular (for me, it's once every 2 weeks or so. ) This ensures that you maintain pride in your home by keeping it up nicely for visitors, and you keep up the experience of hosting. It is easy to get into a rut of going out to meet friends or always going to their places. Best wishes for livening up your life! You are a "Somebody"!

It seems to me being single is harder for men as discussing feelings isn't encouraged. Here are a few things that keep me sane: 1. Having a pet. 2. Focusing on things that bring me joy like sailing. 3. Learning new skills. I'm studying Swedish. 4. Reaching out to friends via text and phone. 5. Making myself special foods. 6. Having a cozy place to read complete with a throw, a variety of tea and scented candles. 7. Scheduling workout time. 8. Practice gratitude journaling before bed. There are many options. I hope you find some things which bring you joy. 🙏🕉

@@aliciab4236 Thank you for caring enough to reply to my comments with really good ideas. I agree that some men don’t share what’s going on with them because a lot of men think doing so makes them appear weak. I was a part of men’s integrity group two years ago where this wasn’t a problem- all of us need to share on our path to healing ❤️‍🩹 it was the most accepting and honest group I have ever been in. Guys that are married won’t share about their struggles because their wives will lose confidence in them and their security will be compromised - I know because I’ve been there. Thank you aliciab4236 and bless you.
