Thank you for this. I’ve taken notes. I work for a Corporation that buys companies. I’m 2 months into a project for a newer acquisition and a reimplementation that had a timeframe of 6 months is a year overdue. A key player left the company, someone who managed the scope without relaying any of that to the steering committee. I thought I was coming on board to be a business analyst, but found myself being asked to be project manager. I’ve found almost all your failure points are evident in the project I’m on. On Monday, I have to deliver the bad news that the scope was not realistic, timeframe not realistic, software vendor/imp. Consultant expectations vs corporation expectations of the vendor/implementation consultants are WAY off to the point there is serious friction between them. The acquired company has business processes and goals that were not considered or planned for in the scope, and the corporation has provided little direction besides “git er done”. This project has been an Easter egg hunt of things half done, and unconsidered. Such a shame.

I would severely dislike to be blamed for things out of my control, unrealistic budget, deadline. Or team that won’t answer or cooperate because I’m not their direct report/manager.
