Lets face it as most geniuses they are very intelligent but also very dumb in the more human interaction aspect, tending to be less tedered to the ground when lost in thoughts. Sheldon has alway been self absorbed, both versions. Young sheldon believed he could fix a refrigerator because he was a genius but couldn't. The voice over he does as he tells the story is not always accurate because it is his perception but we see the events as they truely are, for example his dad cheated on his mom was a misunderstanding in his mind only, it never happened because the woman with his dad was his mom in some cosplay. Sheldon tends to over react and be bitter over trivial things i.e tami. His so called friends aren't his friends because he doesn't consider them that. He doesn't understand others problems because he is too lost in his head to realise that they have problems which he doesn't understand in the first place. Like gorgie said, the don't tell him to protect him. Simply put sheldon lives his truth but that is not necessary what really happened as we have seen over the series, he believes what he says so it is true to him.

This is actually an excellent theory, and I agree with you on the difference between the child Sheldon, the Sheldon that we become acquainted with over the course of the Big Bang theory, and then narrator Sheldon whose older and wiser - a family man that has a loving relationship with his wife and probably is in his mid to late 40s early 50s. Despite his genius and eidetic memory, we can’t forget that Sheldon will always interpret things in his own unique way and how these things correlate/affect him. Plus, I think another thing to take into consideration is that time after George Senior passes away and Sheldon is essentially by himself in college. Sheldon has never been good with dealing with his emotions and as a child it was his family that helped him with figuring out how to deal with a lot of that frustration and confusion… Now think about a Sheldon who is struggling to come to terms with the sudden passing of his father, doesn’t have as easily access to his family since he’s living on campus, and his family can’t visit as often due to just trying to figure out how to keep going emotionally and financially - Mary’s depression, Connie’s comforting her daughter and doing what she can, Missy’s most likely acting out, and Georgie’s got to balance his own grief while taking over the role of Man of the House and being a Daddy with the mother of his baby girl… that’s a Sheldon who has time to start emotionally withdrawing, developing some bad habits, and regressing socially.

One thing to remember is that narrator Sheldon is Sheldon years AFTER the Big Bang Theory ends and he has kids, and we see in the Big Bang Theory (mainly towards the last two seasons when the writers realized in the moment humor with Sheldon’s childhood wasn’t a good idea anymore since they had a new continuity to align with) that not everything Sheldon remembers about his childhood is as what he seemed to him. So narrator Sheldon has a more clear mind after going through his character development and growth throughout the Big Bang Theory

I take it as Sheldon isn't always emotionally understanding, and after his father went down hill do to his drinking and died, it may have caused him to repress something's until his brother stepped in and told him off. By the time he went to collage things probably changed for the worse too. Also maybe it's cause of different writers not actually checking in on things with each other.
@kevind39748 ай бұрын
Also all but jorgie went down hill as well. Well jorgie kinda but his was just two devorces wich in hindsight make sense. First ‘wife’ was a shotgun wedding (his insistence) and the second probably happened when he made it BIG so the marriage could not survive the shift Sheldon completely closed off based on future statements. Dude ended up lying to himself and keeping himself down for almost 30 years because he didn’t want to face reality His sister seemed to have lost some of that fire in her. She still has it but the passion isn’t the same and the drive just seems mute compared to her younger years. His mom fell head first into hardcore religion. Wich ruined her. And his grandmother fell to conservativism. My guess out of age or all her romantic relationships failing after the show. Life hit them when the dad fell to his vices and died. it seems like jorgie was the only one able to take the hit. Probably because he had already been hit before with the child. He had the support. The rest don’t seem like they did.

For the number 1 spot, I have slightly dark (or maybe more accurate depressing) suggestion why he was so negative about his father: it is his strange way to cope with the loss he never actually accepted until he started to narrate his own young... We know Sheldon has a hard time with emotions, not in the slightest his own and if we think he has issues with dealing with sarcasm or sexual desire, how could he be expected to deal with such loss, at such a young age in anything but a convulted Sheldon way, only this time for a more saddening reason. Because I think the truth is, for most part of TBBT, Sheldon, internally, is still not ready to let go of the man his father actually was and to protect himself from the hurt, he created an eloborate fantasy father that he didn't have to miss. By clinging to the negatives and adding some believable falsehoods, Sheldon has created an image for himself of a father he wouldn't have to miss. The father of his fantasy isn't a man he should mourn for, isn't someone he should grief over and he also didn't have to regret the times he should have been kinder to him. It is a fantasy that Sheldon Cooper just was more comfortable with. And we know that if Sheldon is more comfortable with something, it might as well be established truth and nothing but the truth for him. It was only after seeing his fathers advice from beyond the grave near the end of TBBT, that forced him to reconsider and I believe that with Amy at his side, he finally had the strength to unwrap this narrative, cut fact from fiction and come to terms with the figure his father was. As surely flawed man, not nearly as brilliant as his genius son but in his heart a kind and loving dad to his children and this might also be the reason why Sheldon (other than his general ego, it is still Sheldon after all) narrates Young Sheldon to start with. To right his wrongs (though he would never call it that way) and present the actual story as it happens (off course, still from his biased view). Again, this is pretty dark and really not a healthy way for the boy to deal with the loss of his father but with Sheldon, I see him to do this. If only to protect himself, something Amy, bless her heart, helped him to dismantle to allow himself to finally properly grief. As for Mary, she might not see eye-to-eye with Sheldon in matters related to God and she might not always understand him but she did love him and at this specific point, I think she knew perfectly what he was doing and why, and she couldn't bring herself to take that away from him. Because, never forget: in the end, his family was always protecting him. Especially from the things that were too heavy to put on his shoulders.

Paige's not being mentioned in TBBT may be due to a tragedy: I believe the Paige character committed suicide in her late teens, and thus adult Sheldon really blocks out her existence. REALITY CHECK: Everyone should acknowledge that these two shows are about fictional characters, and "inconsistencies" in the timelines are nothing to lose sleep over. Regarding my comment about Paige, Mckenna Grace is alive and well (as far as I know). There are MANY instances in YS that point to Paige's demise. Sheldon is oblivious to how he is different from his peers, and this is the source of the show's humor for his character. Paige is painfully aware of these differences, and it is sad to see her struggling with that (good acting!): She blames herself for her parents divorce and is depressed about it; She says once she wished she wasnt smart, and longs to fit in; she engages in destructive behavior in getting drunk at a frat party and almost goes home with a much older boy; She says she has no friends in college and is quite sad about it; any others?

A lot of this could be chalked up to Sheldon not actually having an eidetic memory (since it's not really a thing, especially in adults) and overtrusts a flawed, emotionally biased view of the past since he believes he remembers everything accurately. Sheldon probably had his opinion of his father deeply influenced by his mother's opinion of him in the wake of an affair that seems to be the most salient memory for him.
@rocketmom608 ай бұрын

For number one, I like to believe that it took till Sheldon became a father to look back and realize he did have a pretty good dad as it takes one to know one. It’s possible that because both of them shared different interests Sheldon looked at his dad in a bad light because of it. It’s also possible because of the three knocks incident that Sheldon always thought bad of his father because that left him traumatized and since Georgie didn’t show Sheldon the truth that the family was in shambles after that Sheldon always thought bad of his father.

The true reason as to why Paige was never mentioned during The Big Bang Theory was because her character wasn't introduced until season two of Young Sheldon which aired during the final season of The Big Bang Theory. As a result, they never had time to introduce Paige properly as an adult like they did with Tam. There are two options for the writers can do with Paige. They can either write it so that she has turned her life around in the end, or she died of suicide some how. The latter option, however, would be a huge mistake. The reason why is because we've seen success with a lot of classics like Rosanne and Frasier get rebooted, so I am willing to bet that The Big Bang Theory will do that sometime down the road, and when that happens, seeing an adult Paige come back into Sheldon's life would be a very interesting storyline.

Having an eidetic memory does not mean a person never forgets anything. It also doesnt mean a person is more intelligent than others or more socially awkward. It simply means that someone can recall(remember)information, after being shown it for 30 seconds or less, clearer than others can after a few minutes. People with "eidetic memory" like Sheldon & Dr. Reid from Criminal Minds don't really exist & even if they did, we don't know how to test for it so a person wouldn't be labeled as having it. Saying that a character has an eidetic memory is a popular way for writers to say someone is a genius but it really isn't something doctors can test or diagnose.

Outside just different writers- when you analyze Sheldon's character, this is possibly why he views his father negatively in TBBT. It's the people he dislikes most that are the one's he never talks about- hence why he never brought up people like Tam (and possibly Paige) until someone else found out about them. But with somebody like his father, that's not something you can avoid discussing especially around those who care about you most. So it's possible after George died, Sheldon chose only to remember the bad parts/ negative aspects of his father in order deal with the trauma he most likely had from losing someone he had a close emotional attachment to. It was only after he found lifelong friends, true love, and having a family of his own, could he finally address these feelings and talk about his father in a positive manner again.
@janetmoore11248 ай бұрын
The first thing to remember is that Sheldon has a very selective memory. He remembers only what serves him at the time and conveniently forgets later on. He absolutely knows that what he does affects other people. Too many examples to numerate them all but he knew his criminal blackmail of Priya would force Leonard to sign a new roommate agreement. He inadvertently disclosed a plot point in the Harry Potter book Leonard was reading, but when Leonard scolded him on it, he deliberately ruined the next book plot as well. He stole the reel of film when he couldn't get into the theater to see the Indiana Jones remake, which made sure no one else could see it. He deliberately got Amy taken off her research project so she could work with him. He deliberately insulted Howard in an effort to make him feel bad about his career as an engineer. He didn't give Leonard credit when they co-authored a paper and then when Leonard was giving a talk on it, he invaded the discussion to try to make Leonard look incompetent. All of those examples were deliberate. He knew what the reaction of the people would be.

There are a few continuity problems. In Big Bang, Missy says "we had a dog that made a sound like that, had to put him down." In Young Sheldon, the Coopers never had a dog. In Big Bang, Sheldon says he came back from Germany because the house blew off the cinder blocks, implying that their house was a trailer. In Young Sheldon, the house is a ranch style single family home. In Big Bang, Sheldon says he knocks 3 times because he caught his dad cheating on his mom. In Young Sheldon, that never happened and Sheldon starts doing the triple knocking thing with no explanation in season 7. In Big Bang, Sheldon says Billy Sparks bullied him. In Young Sheldon, Billy is only bully-ish in the 1st episode, then his little sister becomes Sheldon's bully. In Big Bang, Sheldon is upset that Tam didn't move to California with him. In Young Sheldon, it was never even brought up when Sheldon told Tam he was moving. There's a bunch of others I can't remember right now.

It’s okay, not all sequels or prequels are perfect. Even The Hobbit is not great as The Lord of The Rings, but I do prefer Young Sheldon than Big Bang Theory. I just take it that: 1. Big Bang Theory as the first series need a character development as any other tv series, so they will make a dramatic family background to emphasize his adult friendship and point of view of his family. 2. Young Sheldon is self centered and haven’t really get grown up reality check. At finale episode of Young Sheldon, he finally realizes how great his family especially his dad.

As a mother of a 31 year old son who has ADHD herself, and has a son who was diagnosed with both ADHD and Asperger's Syndrome, I always thought that Sheldon was "on the spectrum". I ended up only having one child due to my son's high level of needs, as well as my divorce and subsequent stint as a single parent, which began when my son was less than four years old. I understand Mary's "helicopter parenting" in a sympathetic way. I think that Mary saw how different and special Sheldon was, and worried about his ability to get along with others as an adult. While many see Mary's need to help Sheldon navigate his way through life as obsessive, I think it helped to set him up for success as a very gifted scientist who was able to live independently and attend graduate school halfway across the country at the age of 15 or 16. Unfortunately, Mary's over focusing on Sheldon left her other two children and her husband often feeling neglected. This was sad, but I think she was just a normal Neurotypical Mom who did her best to parent Sheldon, a very gifted and Neuro Diverse little boy who grew up to be a very successful young man and adult. I think that Sheldon's high level of giftedness helped him to succeed in life, even as it also further separated him from the rest of his family and "peers". (This was further reflected in Sheldon's feelings that he truly has no peers.) In turn, Sheldon never felt like anyone in his early life (except maybe his mom and Meemaw) truly understood him, leading to family tension later in life. I love the character Sheldon, and was so glad that they made "Young Sheldon". It really helped me to understand my son better. I'm going to miss this lovely show. SPOILER ALERT: BTW, I think that YS revealed in Season 7 that George did not actually have an affair on Mary. ❤ He did have a flirtation with the next door neighbor, but he backed away from that just in time to avoid a physical affair. The "incident" that Sheldon walked in on, that he thought was his dad cheating on his mother, was actually a "spicy" encounter between his parents after they spent a sumner apart. Mary and Sheldon had just returned from Germany, when Mary broke out with a German "costume" including a wig which she modelled for a very happy George. This costume lead to sexy interlude between George and Mary, which Sheldon interrupted when he burst into their bedroom without knocking. Sheldon saw his dad with a blonde woman, messing around in his parent's bedroom. He didn't recognize his mom and thought his dad was having an affair. (This episode also explained Sheldon's habit of always knocking three times before entering a room. In Season 7, Sheldon explained that he always wanted to give people time time to "put their pants back on" after this very upsetting incident.) The fact that Sheldon and his father never discussed this incident actually cemented Sheldon's belief that his dad cheated on his mom. This was very sad to me, as it colored his lifelong feelings about his dad, who passed away shortly after this incident. To me, his is just another of Sheldon's "misunderstandings" that lead me to believe that he is on the spectrum. After watching the end of Season 7 we see that Sheldon moved to California right after his dad died, leaving all of his friends back in Texas. Perhaps "TBBT Sheldon" was referring to the fact that had a lot more trouble making friends in CA, as a 15 year old graduate student living away from home and his extensive support system, so soon after his dad passed away. This would make a lot of sense to me, as most teenagers would have had trouble adjusting to this level of stress and adversity at that young age.

My theory is since we see Billy's sister bully him, maybe Sheldon attributes her actions to Billy instead of saying he had a girl bully
@dobrisomething6 ай бұрын
Biggest issue was that TBBT sheldon was bearly functioning person, devoid of any social skills. YS has plenty of social interactions, social education and proper upbringing. Definately not the same person. It took him years in TBBT to develop any kind of emphaty and read social queues. It is implied that he got along in his childhood through strict rules alone, not proper social education shown in YS.
@beesknees95656 ай бұрын
None of the "friends" he had in childhood were actual friends who would help me through grief, like Howard's friend's circle. And you do realise that the "Young Sheldon" was cast after TBBT, so of course he couldn't mention Paige or professors, they didn't exist until "Young Sheldon". As for George, we can see through YS that from Sheldon's point of view where he was incredibly selfish and self-centred he saw all his family in a negative way. It took him 12 seasons of TBBT to finally become an adult.

I think most of these can be explained in one of two ways: 1) Adult Sheldon narrates Young Sheldon after almost all (if not all) the events of TBBT have concluded, and thus his perspectives (and, relatedly, his preferred ways of telling or withholding details of his own past) have probably changed… it also occurs to me that differences in character and/or relationship dynamics could be explained simply by noting that Young Sheldon is, in fact, Sheldon’s own account (from his perspective at a time following the events of TBBT) of his childhood and youth… 2) let’s face it, some degree of retconning was probably inevitable to translate Sheldon’s backstory (even if only from adult Sheldon’s own perspective) from off-screen anecdotes to on-screen story.

What if a lot of the faults he and Mary attributed to his dad on TBBT were actually a mix of Georgie and Missy trying to cope after George died, and the way Sheldon coped with them changing was to blame it on all on him?

I never really got into TBBT, but on the advice of friends, my wife and I binged Young Sheldon E2E. I loved the show, it reminded me of a time in my life that I spent in SE Texas in the lare seventies. IMO it perfectly captures the look and feel of that time in that place, like no other. So on that, it's a potent nostalgia trip for me. But it's the characters that I've come to love. I swear, George Sr, MeeMaw, and Georgie are all characters that could be directly drawn from people that I knew at the time. The Coopers really do represent the Heart of Texas, the spirit and soul of that part of the state. Truly characters and people that I've have the warmest memories of and have come to love over time. They are the Best of Texans - people that are genuine, warm and loving, generous, a bit mischievous and rule bending when it is appropriate, and both independent by nature and loyal as they come. I've been and lived all over the US, and to me, Texas has some of the very best, and the very worst, citizens of this country. The Coopers are the best! The show reminds me that the rest of the country needs Texas, and Texas needs the rest of us (OK, well most of us). I wish that everyone would realize this need, symbiosis, and relationship. We'd all be stronger for it.

Same with dr surges and linkletter they were more science acquaintances than friends his own age. Just a thought?

During the Big Bang. They only saw or spoke with each other every other weeks or months. That was a pretty easy one.

The problem with creating a prequel series, is there's bound to be some inconsistencies. Which leads to unanswered questions. There's one question I have. Since Georgie was a minor when he and Mandy met. Then they had relations which resulted in a baby. Georgie was a 17 year old dad. why wasn't Mandy arrested for raping a minor? It doesn't matter if Georgie or any minor wants it, bc the law states you're not old enough to consent. Maybe the law is different in Texas. Laws all over the world are different. Even in America some states 17 year olds are old enough to consent.

Plus it is would Georgie to accuse Mandy for legal action to happen, and we also need to look Into the past, before 2000 many things worked differently in society and law.

@@64chrom or the minors parents they're usually the ones that call the police. I know she didn't know until it was too late. Bc Georgie lied about his age, however that doesn't matter. In a court of law the judge will tell you ignorance is no excuse.

Years later, we know that Barber was casted as George Cooper Sr. on Young Sheldon, and he appeared for short time as George Sr. on TBBT. Now, if we ignore that info, and ignore the being of TBBT as a show, and pretend it's all real, shoudn't Sheldon think that Jimmy is someone really familliar?

I think it wasn’t until he got closer to people in TBBT he would have considered people like Tam and Paige acquaintances rather than friends. He never opened up to them and he openly admits that he can be irritating to most people. It’s obvious that Sheldon has high standards for friendship: when Tam didn’t move to college with him he considered it a betrayal, even though most everyone would see it’s irrational to think that. And Paige drew a mustache on his face instead of giving him his first kiss. His self centered ego wouldn’t recognize the times he was cold to her and realize that he deserved some comeuppance.

I never noticed any change in Sheldon and Mary's relationship from Young Sheldon to the Big Bang Theory. With Billy Sparks, the incidents mentioned on The Big Bang Theory happened before Sheldon was 9,which is when Young Sheldon begins. We see Billy bullying Sheldon in the Pilot. Presumably, Billy becomes Sheldon's friend in the 2nd episode, when Sheldon attempts to befriend him. An alternate theory is that Billy turned nice when he felt guilty for accidentally poisoning the Coopers with his eggs. Another alternate theory is that Sheldon didn't want to admit to his adult friends that Billy's sister was the bully Sheldon said he had no friends growing up because as an adult, he no longer likes the friends he had when he was a kid. Sheldon didn't remember his father fondly because his father cheated on his mother. I don't think Sheldon is the one who was lying about his childhood. Georgie, on the other hand, said a lot of things to Leonard that were proven false on Young Sheldon (Georgie said he looked after Sheldon at school, he said he drove Sheldon everywhere, he said he apologized to people when Sheldon was rude, he said he paid for Sheldon to go to Germany, he said he looked after the family).

They should make TBBT and YS two separate realities that have nothing to do with each other, if they had stayed loyal to everything TBBT said about the Coopers the series would be more like married with children, all the changes were made in order for it to be a show worth watching, but the changes have made it too different that if they were to end it by further linking it to TBBT it would be sad, Mary doesn't seem to have a good relationship with Georgie and Missy referring to them as dumb as soup and not wanting to give a family ring to Georgie whose had several broken marriages and is constantly dating. Missy is a hostess with several children and also bad relationships. The family we've been seeing these past years should not grow into the characters we saw in TBBT, let Sheldon go to California, don't kill George or have him commit an affair, just give us more the Coopers.

I believe that if Young Sheldon would have the characters portrayed more accurate to how Sheldon described them or how they appeared in TBBT, they wouldn't be well received by new audience, and would not work well in a sitcom. For example Red Forman from That 70's show", he was a conservative "America loving" strict father to Eric, but he had softer moments that made us love him as a character. If he was only unsympathetic, old conservative he wouldn't work well with the audience, that why George was changed to sympathetic and understanding character.

The Carrie Diaries is prequel to Sex in the City, but in SitC Carrie Bradshaw explicitly states that her dad walked out on the family when she was a child yet. In the Carrie Diaries, she's being raised by a single father. Also in the original series Carrie Bradshaw literally never spoke about her little sister. The worst part is both series are adaptations of books written by the same person and both shows had the same producer... With a little consistency been too much to ask for?
