I’m a Vietnamese and I really enjoy your videos with Thuong chan . Japan is always my dream country. I studied Japanese for 8 years to always try to find a chance to come back to Japan to live but finally I ended up moving to Scotland to live with my Scottish partner . I had a Brompton back in June last year and that started my little joy everyday riding everywhere with my little Brompton . I must say I’m really jealous with you since the roads and infrastructure in Japan are so good and convenient for cycling . The road quality is very bad in the UK . But in return UK has a national cycle network which spreads everywhere in the whole country. That’s something I wonder whether Japan has that kind of network ? Another thing I would want to add to your video is the discrimination . In the UK people are being educated to have an understanding of equality and no discrimination , but as an Asian I find myself not able to be fully accepted in the society here. People here are more aware of colour people but you still can see a lot of discrimination against Asian people. In contrast in Asian countries , Asian people especially Japanese love your look as a white people. I think if you are from America or from Europe , Japanese treat you in a better way. By the way I’m happy for Thuong chan since I know she has a good husband who really cares for her . I can tell that by the way you interact with her :)
@TwoWheelCruise4 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I'm glad you like our videos :) Japan does not have much of a cycling network, and there are very few dedicated cycling paths. We have some very nice courses nearby like Morikoro park, but these are very rare. Many of the main roads though will have nice wide sidewalks with space for cyclists and pedestrians, but you need to ride slow here as the priority is for the pedestrians, even if they are walking in the "cycling lane". Discrimination is a touchy subject and very much exists here in both positive and negative forms. I may make a whole video dedicated to this, but it is impossible to be fully accepted in the society here as you will always be non-Japanese, even if you become a naturalized citizen and live your whole life here.
@MrAimertan4 жыл бұрын
@@TwoWheelCruise thanks for your reply. Your insight about discrimination would be an interesting topic although I know it’s quite sensitive. Another thing is I know that many people wish to travel to Japan to discover cities/ countrysides by bikes, it would be excellent if you can do a blog or videos which can recommend people the cycling routes. Or if you know any available website/sources which can provide those information , can you introduce to people too ? :D

The points you made about public transit were interesting. If you are relocating to a new city or country, or are a tourist, that would have to be top of mind for ease and convenience of mobility. The US is so vast, and in a lot of ways it's spread out, creating gaps, and new opportunities to develop in this area. The couple of times I've been to Boston, I've found their metro to be very well laid out, but if you compare it with a city like Detroit, there are certainly some major discrepancies in that area of infrastructure. Where I am located (Ottawa, Canada), I'd say we have a decent public transit system, but have only recently adopted light rail, and it has had its fair share of growing pains in its 14 months of operation.
@TwoWheelCruise4 жыл бұрын
Whenever I travel in Asia there is usually a convenient train or bus from the Airport. When I visit home in Detroit, my family has to drive to the airport 😅 The East coast train network is nice though.
@DylTyrril4 жыл бұрын
@@TwoWheelCruise That's what I've heard! It's interesting how different countries and municipalities choose to allocate funding for infrastructure projects, such as mass transit. I think it is a sign of good overall health for a town when their public transit is working for its citizens. Being an avid cycling commuter, I would extend that to a city's cycling infrastructure for sure!

Out of those 10 things, the only thing I think we have where I live on the south coast of the U.K. is castles. We have quite a lot of castles, but not that many that are preserved like the ones in Japan. Some are looked after but I can’t imagine them rebuilding the entire thing in the same way. Many are just wrecks with a few walls standing or just a hill where a castle once stood. Public transport in this town is not the worst but for most buses and trains it’s a half hour wait between them. Which for a town of 100k people is not particularly good. But I think the biggest thing for me is the normalcy of cycling there vs here. You occasionally see a woman riding a bike in normal clothes and no helmet, so that’s nice to see. But generally almost all the men look like the typical cyclist stereotype. Maybe soon we can follow the US in upgrading to a leader who’s not a psychopath and we can solve all these problems...

Okinawa is a completely different animal than mainland. To mirror what you have said: #1- US bases nearby increase some risks. Okinawa has been this way for a long time. #2- It's not so clean here. Allot more trash and junk seen in yards and roadsides. Hospitality is a bit less due to the higher Y/A-plate population here (*COUGH* American Village). #3- Allot of cars vs. few pedestrians (outside Naha). Only buses (limited) and a small monorail line (Naha). Tons of Kei cars and slow drivers. Then add tourists. #4- Rain. Winter: Rain with a gale and cool. Summer: Hot and humid with rain/thunderstorms. Typhoon season: anytime all the time. Did I say rain? Oh and by the way it rains here. More rain. Don't forget the salt spray and Oki rust on everything too. And rain. #5- Allot of roadies here, some MTB. See #4 for riding cons. #6- Kawaii culture / everything is cute is here. Then add Habu. Or box jellyfish. See #4 for cons. #7- Convenience (conbini) THEY ARE EVERYWHERE. 7-11, not so much. Many farmer's markets here though. #8- Allot of beaches, allot of castle ruins, allot of parks, but see #4 for cons. #9- Offlimits. (for some of us) #10- Okinawa Soba. Okinawa BBQ.

It is SO different from Denmark. Here, particularly in Copenhagen, everything is dirty. Ugly graffiti everywhere. Lots of people just throw their garbage whereever they are. Used facialmasks everywhere. And the traffic! Everybody are enemies. Buspassengers hate cyclists. Cyclists hate buspassengers. And cardrivers. And pedestrians. People here take pride in NOT showing any kind of consideration towards others. When I'm out riding my bicycle I always feel lucky when I return home alive. MANY cars, if possible pass you with as little a distance as possible between you and themselves. That' s the norm here in Denmark. Very little, if any, respect for other people.

I have to disagree about the pedestrian safety. If anything in residential areas there are often not even sidewalks. Of course, it is still "safe", but I wouldn't say that big sidewalks are the norm. If anything small and often with gutter on the side, or just no sidewalk. Also in the video with the Japanese woman from Osaka you talked about Japanese keeping the rules on the road/sidewalk. I have no idea what you mean. As you saw cyclists, at least in Osaka maybe, would cross on red all the time. On the side walk bicycles move around like crazy and ignore having to keep to the outside, close to the road. Pedestrians also ignore the fact that they should be walking on the inside and can often even be in the middle. People are on their phones all the time, while cycling, or at the very least have earbuds in, which is also suppose to be a no-no. There is no bigger menace in Japan than the mamachari. I am even lucky enough to know people that had accidents with them. With a bicycle on the road, together with the cars, I feel more safe than as a pedestrian (or god forbid bicycle among the other "cyclists") on the sidewalk. Also at Dotonbori, Osaka for some reason there is always trash around. It might have something to do with all the Chinese there.
@TwoWheelCruise4 жыл бұрын
That's true, the more residential areas and countryside areas will have little to no sidewalk and mamachari riders can be very dangerous. I think Osaka in particular is much worse about cycling violations compared to Nagoya, I was really surprised with the number of people running red lights. For Dotonbori, I think it's the combination of many food/snack shops and a high volume of tourists who expect garbage bins, but there are almost no garbage bins to be seen anywhere.

@@TwoWheelCruise I am talking about Dotonbori even right now, with no tourists and many shops closed. It is not like there aren't other places with a lot of food shops in Japan. But Dotonbori is well known as one of the dirtiest places. When compared to many other first world countries it is still better, though, that can't be denied.

Sidewalks are a real rarity in nearly all of the USA. Bike lanes only exist in a few of the areas of some progressive cities, so it's relative. For some one looking at it from a USA perspective, Japan is so much better; but compared to Netherlands, or even Taiwan, Japan has more work to do.

BTW, look up the term "Rolling Coal on bicycles" to get just an inkling of the hostility to bike riders in the USA, do the same for pedestrians. It's not hard to figure out why its dangerous to ride alone or become detached from your pack in USA. I just have a hard time believing this hostility would be tolerated in Japan, much less, normalized as it is in USA.

When I was a kid my family lived near Tokyo near an AFB as my father was in the Air Force and my parents always commented about how kind and hospitable the Japanese people were. They said they dreaded the day when Western ways may make their way to Japan and hurt their culture. Always so polite to us kids. In the US, you can now get jumped and even shot for a cell phone. Convenience stores in the US are very dangerous at night and more of a convenience for thieves at night. Lots of robberies and carjacking's of people while getting fuel at night also. Many parts of US towns you don't want to be on the streets after dark. Stay in Japan.

A video about the things you don't like about Japan would also be interesting.

Karaoke: I stick to easy songs. "Bad Moon Rising" by Creedence Clearwater Revivial is good for this (ONLY FOUR NOTES!).

If i want to throw the people I am with for a loop, I'll do God Save the Queen by the S#x Pistols. You do not sing it - you yell it.
