He played a priest in the movie absolutions...a pleasure to watch , hear, and really observe....always so intense...you just didn't know what he was going to do....just mesmerizing...alcohol killed him...I'm sure he was a tortured soul...died too young 59....Great as the interrogator in 1984....whew! A man's man...such talent!!!

It´s a good list, but I would include "Look back in anger" (1959), "the robe" (1953), "my uncle rachel" (1952)

I saw Beckett when our English class went to see it. There was only Burton and O'Toole, the others were just to fill up the set. I was mesmerised. His voice, I regard as the greatest I have ever heard. It is riviting to hear. His speech to Sinatra is a perfect example.

Although "unloved" by critics and movie goers, I very much like "The Comedians". I think that "Becket" is Burton's all time achievement, followed by "The Spy Who Came In From The Cold". As to Burton's chagrin about playing Becket, perhaps it takes a sinner to understand a saint. Read "The Confessions of St. Augustine".

agree, it‘s also 1. Becket 2. Spy for me. 3. Virgina Woolf (though I haven‘t seen Look Back In Anger).

I don't know how they could slight "The Comedians." It really holds up too and is so relevant today.

Richard Burton won 7 nominees by the academy for 7 films including The Robe. He did a fabulous performance in that one. I love all His movies and I still do to this day.

Richard Todd, shown in one of the clips from The Longest Day portraying Major John Howard at the capturing of Pegasus Bridge, was not only a WWII veteran, he was one of the paratroopers who landed in the early hours of D-Day in support of Howard and his men.

"The Medusa Touch" would be high on my list. "I am the man with the power to create catastrophe ." Also "The Wild Geese" as others have mentioned.

Factual error. Marc Antony was NOT Caesars adopted son. Octavian of the Julii was, later known as Augustus.

Certainly a good list, but Massacre in Rome (1973) is also a very good Burton film. It was one of the best actors of the 20th century.

Not sure how you'd fit it in (maybe take The Longest Day off since he's just a cameo), but what about Equus? I've always heard he was better on stage in that role, but the Sidney Lumet-directed film is still very powerful.

Saw him in his 10 week run in Equus on Broadway. (I was in college in NYC at the time.) Very good but the story is all those stagey things: like actors walking around in wire frame horse heads. That would not have worked on the silver screen and the film version really came back down to earth. Felt as you do about The Longest Day, still a movie I enjoyed.

I believe that Burton also originated the role on stage and it is said it was one of the greatest live performances ever, so, yes, I would have liked Equus on the list, too.

I've seen most of Richard Burton's movies, although I missed 1984. Among the ones I would have included here are The Robe and The Sand Piper. Where Eagles Dare is only so-so and Cleopatra doesn't belong on anyone's Top 10 list. Anne of the Thousand Days should be top 3 IMHO.

I think this list is pretty good, although I would DEFINITELY remove "The Longest Day" and replace it with "Look Back In Anger". I can't believe that THAT film is not on this list. I wouldn't call "The Longest Day" a Richard Burton movie. I think it's an excellent film but it's more of an ensemble piece than a Richard Burton movie. I also don't really agree with the choice of "Where Eagles Dare". It's a good and entertaining film but I think I'd replace that one with "Equus". I definitely agree with your number one choice of "Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf". I felt bad to hear that Richard Burton disliked his performance in "Anne Of The Thousand Days". I had never heard that before. As much as I enjoy John Wayne films, there's no WAY Wayne deserved the Oscar for "True Grit" over Burton in "Anne Of The Thousand Days"....in my humble opinion. Anyway, this was very enjoyable. Many thanks for posting.

Liked Burton in Eagles but I don't really rate the film, although, I'd watch it again, just for Burton, Look back in Anger might have been a good replacement, all in all, some great choices, and can't argue with Wolfe as no 1.

If you want to see Richard Burton and some find work younger age he played Alexander the great it’s actually an excellent movie also the robe another bit of biblical film excellent portrayal and also there was a movie of its time called the Bramble Bush and the personalities Angie Dickinson in that movie along with Barbara Rush and oh can’t think of the other gentleman‘s name but it’s an excellent film about and it’s time relationships and the doctor gets euthanasia is a part of the story and I think that’s a really great movie I don’t know why these didn’t come up in the top 10 but I was sure that he had played in the movie comic Visto butAnd as far reflections of a goldeneye I thought he was in that but it was Brando and Elizabeth that was in reflections of a golden night and then it’s time that film was not maybe the film you’re gonna show you now because of 1967 they couldn’t have put some of the scenes that they may have filmed that could’ve been shown overseas that couldn’t be shown in America so you might get a fuller body of Carson McCullers work in a film that’s put out at this period of time so
