Clarification: Ride to Happiness' drive tires roll the train back to the launch platform where guests can evacuate, not the main station. Although it would be awesome if they could send the trains backwards through the Jojo roll. That would be the best evac ever.

I think I'd have been inclined to design them so they accelerate the train just enough to make sure it didn't valley. then there's no evacuation required.

I got the “chance” to ride Pegasus and the many other “Olympians”. Below is my 10ish word for all of the coasters unless specified these were front or really close to it. Zeus-A fitting lighting logo but not terribly rumbly.(The day I went, I had the fortune of experiencing this in a downpour. It didn’t for the rest of the day but I thought this was worth noting). Hades 360(Mid-Train): Hell’s not this cruel. Hades 360: Tolerable but still hell on my body. Cyclops: Not an ugly monster but still a monster. Pegasus: I’d be in less pain taking on Spiral Pegasus. Overall: Glad I got to experience but not rushing back to it…maybe just keep to the water park…or not…who knows.

It only looks crazy. There are lateral jolts on many other coasters that snap you even more. What makes this one different is where it is, being at the end of the ride, where it makes no sense. At least there aren't over-the-shoulder restraints to bash your head into, like you get with Cedar Point's Raptor, which has an even more violent jolt into the brake run.

The idea that Arrow Dynamics didn't think the upstop pads instead of wheels would be a problem on Magnum XL-200 before its initial release is... amazing to me. Let alone the metal lap bar... its nuts. With a coaster that large, and at that speed... it seems almost inevitable these would be issues. Regardless, a very interesting video! Look forward to the Lightning Rod one!

@AlexAfferMetallica

Ive always thought the same thing, like obviously pads would cause way too much friction and be way less practical than wheels, and why would they think to first try this out on a record breaking, limit pushing coaster like Magnum? Maybe they thought the upstop wheels wouldnt be as necessary since the coaster had no inversions?
@coasterguy
@coasterguy Жыл бұрын
@@AlexAfferMetallica Arrow considered Magnum to be basically a very large scale mine train. The cars and chassis were pulled directly from that line - and those used the unstop pads. The first 'large mine train' model posing as a regular coaster was Astroworld's "Dexter Frebish's Electric Roller Ride" (later named Excalibur) that featured a large drop near the beginning of the layout, then basically did lots of helixes and mine train-style stuff, only way up on stilts. That drop worked just fine with the pads, except for the back car, which would smack those pads on the underside of the track and catapult back-seat riders into their lap bars (which were at least six inches above their laps). It was deliciously terrifying, especially for folks who'd ridden the ride many times, but never before in the back seat. The looks on their faces said it all.

It isn't good and won't ever be good unless and until they untwist it. EDIT: I realize this is a pejorative comment, but as someone who very much prefers milder rides... RMC's fetish for adding unnecessary intensity to what had often previously been family or moderate-intensity coasters irks me to no end. And after what they did to Colossus, the one major coaster at Magic Mountain I was likely to work up the nerve to ride... I have little reason to go there.

Here's another one that doesn't get brought up - the original audio system on Space Mountain at Disneyland. After the success of Space Mountain: De La Terre A La Lune, Space Mountain got a new audio system with a score composed by Dick Dale. However this system added a lot of weight to the trains, specifically the batteries. Not only did these batteries never get charged properly, causing the music to not play, it also caused excessive stress to the track and structure, causing it to be structurally compromised, and led to the 2005 retracking by Dynamic Attractions, as well as almost a complete rebuild of the structure, with supports being dug more underground to support the new track/trains.

I'd jate to say it but Twisted collosus somewhat deserves to be there. As a Roller Coaster Operator i understand the pain of not being able to dispatch trains on time. From my experience, the main thing that prevents dispatching on time is the guest, including myself, is not having loose articles ready/ or left at the queue or with a non-rider, taking bags up to the station. With only one train on our track, it severly drops our ridership per hour. BUT as a Roller Coaster Operator; the main thing that prevents dispatching on time is the guest. not having loose articles ready, taking bags up to the station. My ride has one train and it does severely drop our riders per hour. IF TC gets a dual station, i do hope is simillar to Tatsus Station....

Excellent video! Though I was under the impression the second "launch" on Mr. Freeze was primarily there to push the train further up the spike. That's what it looks like, at least. Couple things about Mr. Freeze. The two versions at OT and STL are actually different in that they are mirror images of each other. STL turns left into the top hat, and OT turns right. Second, the LIM’s actually push the train further up the spike, not pull it down faster than gravity.

seems like the best solution for twisted colossus would be to remodel the platform so there is an unload section, a load section, and three trains. then there is plenty of time to unload, and move the third train forward to load, and still anticipate the starting light for the race. then simply put the personal item lockers on a system that presents the same lockers the riders had before they loaded at the unload platform when their train comes in.

Magnum is and will always be my favorite coaster. I love riding at night over and over because there’s never a long wait these days. If you learn how to ride this ride it isn’t as uncomfortable as most claim it to be.

Texas Tornado’s loop is pretty bad and an eyesore for me. They could’ve at least fixed it so it wouldn’t look so bad.

Twisted is my favorite coaster. The racing thing didn't really add or take anything from it other than waving at people before the drop Haha

10:00 I used to ride that when I was a child. Pegasus’ last turn was really a body banger. Sometimes it wouldn’t be as bad but others you feel like you got shot

I remember seeing Mr. Freeze when I went to Six Flags Over Texas and thought it was crazy that people were riding it. The day after I left the ride ironically had caught on fire.

Honorable Mention: Nessie at HansaPark in germany. Rather loud final brake run, housed in an uninsulated tin metal tunnel (think: Pipe). Yeah you can hear the brakes roar across half the park, and you're advised to plug your ears when you dive into the tunnel.

I don't recall the final turn entirely from Pegasus when I was younger, however my Dad did get one hell of a bruise on his side. That I can recall. Whenever we went back we avoided Pegasus.

Did a "spit TAKE" on the reverse bucket list of coasters to ride! Nahhhh! That's a hard PASS! Had forgotten about up-stop pads on Magnum. Excalibur & Serpent had them at AstroWorld. 85 ft. & 20 ft. tall lift hills though. Texas Tornado looks sooooo quirky!

The last one is a classic design flaw where something works well on paper, even with computer modelling, even under test conditions, but fails once exposed to the public. It's always a big problem with engineering (both mechanical and software). People are unpredictable and if they can mess things up they will.

The pegasus turn was definetley painful the first time you ride it because you dont expect it to whip you that much, however, if you ride it a second time (for some reason) bracing yourself for that turn makes it not so bad

i operated mr freeze at st louis, the reason that one valleys is not the launch motors, one of the trains has issues with drag on the metal fins, i worked an entire season without a valley, however, the bad train stops before the station several times a week, sometime several times a day, the drag gets so bad the it almost cant make it through the tophat quite often, thats how you know its going to underpark

As a Mansfield local, Adena is pronounced Ah-dee-nah. Adena’s special projects company Adena XPG has been involved with many of Cedar Points ride construction projects. Including Gatekeeper, Valravn and Maverick on top of many others! I also know from talking to a few employees that they are involved in some bigger parks in Florida as well.

Pegasus hurt to ride and it wasn't from the fun Woodie variety of roughness. I legitimately cheered when I was told that Pegasus was getting a retrack.
