i am from hawaii and i now live outside of dc. when i lived out west i was always open and saying hello to everyone. since moving to the east coast, i have shut down inceeasingly, i am still not used to it so i just dont interact with people anymore, it is heartbreaking remembering how i used to feel safe enough to just say hello when passing by strangers, now i just keep to myself and i am very quiet.

I lived in NYC and saw the craziest drivers when it comes to no patience and cutting you off without warning. Then I moved to LA and I saw both crazies and a lot of plain stupid drivers. They just don't know how to drive. I drove in cities in Nevada, Arizona, Oregon, Texas... all of them can't compare to LA. Without a doubt, the worst drivers are in LA.

I'm from Dallas, Texas area and visited New Jersey and Philadelphia a few years ago. It was definitely a shock for me to see just how rude people were. Being from the south and traveled all over the south,I'm use to small talk and basic polite etiquette. None of that existed up there.

Seattle would be No. 11 on the list. It used to be a friendly working-class city, but the "Seattle Freeze" is a real thing. Walking down the street you get no eye contact, no hello, no smile, no nod. This change in the city's personality coincided with the tech boom there. In-migration to Seattle transformed the city from a college town, airline mfg hub, port and tourist destination, to a trophy city for tech giants. The better the view from your over-priced downtown condo with a view of the Space Needle, the bigger your assholish douchbaggery.

I visited Chicago for a month back in August and literally everyone there was so nice. People there are honest, actually say "thank you", "have a nice day", and always greeted me with a smile. People on the street and train would randomly strike up friendly conversations. I even got locked out of my apartment and my neighbours were there right away trying to help, then invited me for drinks. It felt so welcoming. This really surprised me and I feel like the south side really brings down the city's reputation.

How they described Boston is so true. Aggressive bullies and some of the most miserable and shady people I ever met. Some people in NYC are way more approachable, than Boston. A lot of the people here feel entitled and they drive aggressively on the roads and think they own it. The people tend to single you out if your not like them in their little cliques. It's hard to make genuine friends here, everyone is either a user or and abuser and your considered weird if you don't think or act like them here. You even feel the tension in the air when you get off a plane here or drive into Massachusetts. I have met some of the best people in NYC in comparison to Boston.

You got that right. Most native Miamians have left that place behind. When Julia Tuttle established Miami as a city back in 1896, I don't think she ever envisioned it would turn into such a hell hole of a place. She came from Cleveland, OH. To be honest with you, I think even Cleveland would be a huge upgrade over living in Miami. The place has gone to the dogs now. Also, the weather there sucks and Biscayne Bay is now polluted.

I also expected Miami, FL to be on the list. Although I’ve never lived there, I have relatives who do and I’ve been visiting the city all my life, Unfortunately, it seems that it’s getting worse as the years go by. Most people living there come from South or Central America where they have have different customs and driving laws; therefore they bring those customs to Miami and behave and drive as they would in their native countries. The drivers are one of the rudest in this country.

When I visited NYC I encountered nothing but kind people and I am a southerner. The hotel clerk moved her car so I could park on the street avoiding huge parking fees and that was just the start. I was pleasantly surprised.

I stopped at a bakery that was locked. The woman waved me away and said they close at 3. I looked at my watch and it was 2:45. While they were out sight-seeing near the United Nations they were struggling to find parking. Totally agreed man, I wrote something similar above. I've lived all over the US, but I'm Queens born and raised. New Yorkers are some of the best folks I've ever met anywhere in this country. Sure we're direct and we'll tell you to your face whatever's on our mind, but I'll take that any day over the "fake-polite" attitudes of some other cities. And yeah, I'll always go out of my way to be nice to a tourist/visitor unless they get in the way or act like a knob. I wrote above in another comment, "when you come here, show us - and the city - respect, and you'll get respect back." But act like an ass, and don't be surprised if you're treated like one lol

I live in Chicago and have traveled to many of the cities mentioned and my experience was the people were friendly and accommodating. I believe the issue may be the tourist or the person who is visiting and not the city itself. Just sayin'. That microaggressive comment about the Southside of Chicago is not true. For the most part, people here are friendly and will stop to help out tourists or other people in need. What I have realized, Chicago has a lot of transplants from other states bringing their rudeness and close-minded ways.

I know, we went 7 times between 2012 and 2016 when my husband's son was at West Point Milatary Academy and we would always take a side trip to NYC. I ran across one rude person on the subway apparently he didn't like people from Texas. Get on an interstate headed away from Southern California; 2. Drive until you think you're outside of Southern California; 3. Pull off at a convenience store (I use AM/PM, but even a truck stop works in a pinch); 4. If the clerk is genuinely friendly, congratulations, you are no longer in Southern California! 🥳👍 Can't really comment on most of these, but certainly driving in LA Metro is not for the faint of heart. When I visit a long-time friend of mine in Boston, he complains about Boston traffic. Heh - I signal for a lane change, check blind spot, other drivers give me room and I make my move. Good luck with that in LA - people here treat lane changes as a personal threat, and grounds for use of deadly force. 😳

I just reluctantly left NYC after fifteen years. Yes, I was always in a hurry, as all New Yorkers are, but I was always willing to help, as most New Yorkers are. If you are looking quizzically at a tourist map, someone will always ask if you need directions. If you ask someone for directions, they will help out, though it is amusing when someone asks where the ESB is when they are standing at 5th and 34th. Some of the nicest people on the planet live in NYC. It's only been a couple of months and I miss the city so much.

Having lived in both cities, I can say I 100% agree with everything you said about LA, but disagree about New York. A lot of people love saying sh*t about NYC, but have never even been here and form most of their opinions from what they see and hear online & in movies/tv shows. New Yorkers are direct and honest, and that might be SOME of where the stereotype comes from, but they will also go out of their way to help a person in need or asking for directions, they look out for each other, and there's a generally accepted unspoken policy of "we will always stick up for one another, and we're all in this together." I have lived all over the US, and I mean this with the utmost sincerity: New Yorkers are by far the most caring and generous people I have ever met. Aside from that, a lot of the stereotypes about New Yorkers is just that: a stereotype. And they have almost 0% truth to them. In fact, I always find it funny when people talk about how we're always in a huge hurry, live way too fast, knock people over on the sidewalk, etc. Because none of that is true. It may come from the perception of people working on Wall Street, but that's less than 2% of the overall city. The rest of us are just living our life and are no different than anywhere else. And yeah, if you're a tourist and get in people's way on the sidewalk taking pictures or whatever, people might be rude to you then, or might sort of push through you. That should be expected. We know you're here on vacation, but you have to respect that others have places to be as well and that you can't just expect the whole city to stop for you. With that being said, we love tourists - as long as you respect us, we'll respect you. Just don't come to the city and ACT like a tourist, and then be confused when people give you the cold shoulder lol. Show us - and the city - respect, and it will be returned a hundred-fold. Us New Yorkers are a distinct bunch for sure, and I totally get that this city isn't for everyone. and that's fine! But it's an amazing place full of amazing people, and it's one of the most welcoming places on earth, because pretty much ALL of us here have roots somewhere else. Awesome video as always Briggs!

However, I disagree strongly with your take on Chicago. I moved here 6 years ago and it was the best decision I ever made. "Midwest Nice" is not a myth at all. I lived in Manhattan until I was 25, and the people there could be ridiculously rude. BUT you will also find lots of wonderful people. With that many people in one city you’ll find ALL kinds of people from all over the world. One thing NYC never is is boring. For the past 15 I’ve lived in Santa Barbara, California which is VERY friendly compared to NYC. People here look at you and smile, it’s very laid back, and the weather is perfect most of the time. L.A. on the other hand is someplace I avoid because it’s so rude. Then again, it might be because of the weather, but L.A. is still friendlier than NYC.

To me as someone who grew up just outside the city in NY and NJ they’re damn near one in the same as far as rudeness goes. Bergen County NJ and Rockland County NY are close enough to the city to be combined IMO 🤣🤣🤣. Virtually every infrastructure project is designed to increase congestion and punish folks who need to drive---removing lanes, adding "speed bumps", closing streets, etc... While living in DC I spent a LOT of time in NYC. I absolutely loved it there and loved the people. They are direct but are some of the nicest and most welcoming people I've ever met.

In 70 plus years, living and working mostly in northeastern cities but traveling around the country, I sense a persistent hostility to large NE cities. Philadelphia is in a class of its own in terms of rudeness and vitriol. Measuring rudeness’s in a survey like this one ought to strongly consider how locals treat visitors/tourists. Most of the cities on this list follow stereotypes. New York is a lot nicer, safer and tourist-friendly than the New York of the 2020’s

As someone who visited NYC 7 times in the last 20 years or so I always found nice people to help me as a tourist and I come from outside of the US. Pre cell phone and Google maps I got lost a few times and people were kind and helpful. I would never drive there because the drivers are totally crazy but other than that never had a problem with rudeness.

None of the cities you mentioned that I've been to sorprised me. San Francisco, Detroit(the whole metro area-I lived there), Boston, Buffalo, Chicago, 1, 2, 3 didn't surprise me because I've been to those also. Take his advice. Be nice, decent and respectful to each other.

I'm pretty certain that the origin of the middle finger comes from the Battle of Agincourt. Apparently British longbowmen used their middle fingers to draw back the string, and when the French would capture archers they would cut off their middle fingers, so whenever a British Archer would see a Frenchman they would show them their middle fingers. I haven't verified that story in more than one or two locations but it seems pretty plausible.

So true. Things I have noticed is people judge people before someone opens there mouth these days. And like you said, it is a protection thing.
