The Scientists theory is sort of real in live action movie universe but the story is a lot different when it comes to his birth. In the movie it's unexplained; Clifford was found on the streets then taken to a tent full of animals with rare appearances and abilities. Later on the heroine enters the tent, refuses to adopt Clifford but he sneaks into her backpack. After one day of bonding he grows as tall as her room and entire apartment floor. One day on a walk a scientist who experiments on animals to produce more food but failed many times notices the dog and thinks that he can take a sample of Cliffords DNA since he's extraordinary huge. Unfortunately greed made him want to own Clifford forever. (And since it's a family movie there is an actual happy ending so he failed again)
