One item to note about the 93 Rusty Wallace season is he led Dale Earnhardt by 86 after spring Talladega, the same race he flipped when finishing 6th, got a concussion, and broke his wrist. The next 4 races while racing injured he finished 38th, 29th, 21st, and 39th, falling 298 points behind Earnhardt. Without the wreck, Wallace coasts to the championship.

There is 1990. That's the year Martin was levied a 46pt penalty for a technical issue which didn't create a performance advantage at Richmond. He lost the championship to Earnhardt by 25pts. NASCAR ruled the teams could weld a 1" spacer onto the top of the intake manifold and bolt a 2" spacer to the top of that. The interpretation was sufficiently unclear the car passed pre-race inspection with a 2 1/2" spacer atop an unmodified intake...but was failed after the race.

Had nascar not lost their minds & kept the TRIED & TRUE points system, he'd be tied with Petty & Dale in titles, not Mr. Gets Hot in a 5-Race Stretch Johnson. 2007 Gordon had a 353 point lead wiped away before the Chase. How disgusting is that? Add that he was 1 DNF from beating Labonte in 1996. Thats 4 in a row & 8 titles total. Add in his 93 wins (easily a handful more had he not gotten wrecked/hit late in races), we'd be calling him the GOAT. The Chase RUINED Jeff Gordon's career IMO & did NOTHING to improve nascar. @Adamwinters3 жыл бұрын
I figured it would have had to have been Mark Martin in 1998, but either Gordon's 1996 or 2007 are fine choices. I think Gordon and Labonte had the same number of "bad days" in the 1996 season (6 races of 20th or worse for each), but most of Gordon's lows ended up as DNFs and 30th or worse (usually mechanic failures) whereas Labonte was able to rally enough to get the car back out and finish in the 20s in the running order. Labonte's '96 season was definitely a case study in how to lessen the blows of bad fortune. Martin's '98 was very similar to Labonte with the added benefit of the appearance of dominance, and yet Gordon still beat him on the merits of excellent alone.

Everyone keeps bringing up Gordon's 2014 season. Obviously, it was a really good season for Jeff, but among the top ten best seasons in the modern era not to earn a championship....no. Four wins and 14 fives (while solid) doesn't cut it. Especially when there's drivers on this list who earned more wins, top fives, tens, and had a better average finish than Jeff did in 2014. However, 1996 and 2007 are a different story and it's why they are ranked first and fourth respectively.
@kylemielke10213 жыл бұрын
I agree. The only reason I could get behind 2014 is more about "what could have been". California Spring, Watkins Glenn, Texas Fall, Martinsville Fall, Homestead and other tracks like New Hampshire Gordon had the win if not for strange car trouble (electric failures), rare driver errors of speeding or horribly timed cautions and add the fact that Jeff was actually going for a ship and didn't pit with the lead with 10 laps to go. I feel like 2014 with all the speed the 24 had was an 8+ win type season. Gordon was terrible with the double file restarts. And it grossly hurt his career.
@rolandjovi24413 жыл бұрын
@@kylemielke1021 people dont realize how much bad luck Gordon had in 2014. So many races he could've won or finished top five that he didn't. Like you eluded to, Auto Club, both New Hampshire events, Spring Dover, Atlanta, Fall Texas and the finale are all races he should've finished great but didn't do to freak incidents. Gordon's restarts actually weren't bad in 2014. He won two key races (Indy, Michigan) because of solid restarts. 2010-2013 were peak bad seasons for Gordon as far as restarts were concerned.
@kylemielke10213 жыл бұрын
@@rolandjovi2441 amen. And I agree about the restarts. Although to be fair, with the 24 glasses off, I will say his restart at Texas was bad no matter what the 2 did. What was so amazing about 2014 was just the level of pure speed they brought each week. I wasn't a fan before 2003, but it felt like his 90's prime days going into late summer and fall that year with him qualifying top 3 literally every race. People also forget how close he was at other tracks like Sonoma and Richmond. They were just so fast everywhere. What I will say about 2014 > 2007 was the 24 was significantly better in the last 10 races in 2014 whereas the speed started to fall off after their Charlotte win in 2007.
@rolandjovi24413 жыл бұрын
@@kylemielke1021 he had speed pretty much everywhere all season long. In 2007, Gordon was extremely fast in the first 11 races or so. After his crash at the Charlotte (Coke 600), he wasnt quite as fast the remainder of the season. He still had good cars (top ten speed) but just not winning speed. The final five races were heartbreaking. Johnson won while Gordon scratched and clawed for 7th-10th places.
@SWiFTMK73 жыл бұрын
There's more to it than that. He was the best driver in the field in terms of average finish. He was robbed of multiple wins. AND only missed the final 4 by 1 point due to being wrecked on a late restart at Texas and a winless Ryan Newman after he intentionally wrecked Kyle Larson on the final corner of the final lap at Phoenix. Be real here. That was a highway robbery. Not to mention Gordon had the best car at homestead by far as well. Newman shouldn't have been competing for a championship with zero wins.

I would like to make a statement on the 1985 season. After Bill Elliott won the Winston Million Labor Day weekend at Darlington, that team seemed to fall off drastically. Some have said it was cockiness or maybe some overconfidence with everything they did to that point, but I was of the mindset that the team spent so much time and effort in winning the final race to collect the Million that they were somewhat burned out and being a smaller team, might have used up their best equipment in the 1st 3/4 of the season and simply got outclassed in last 6 or 8 races. Also would like to mention that Bill set a few records that year that will probably stand forever.

What about Rusty Wallace 1988? Led the points the entire summer, tied for most wins (6), 19 out of 29 Top 5's, 23 out of 29 top 10's, an average finish of 7.1 and missed the championship by 24 points.

You know, looking back....the old points system maybe didn't give out enough points for a win. Wasn't it just 5 points over 2nd place?

Jeff Gordon in 2007 was the best non championship season. 30 top tens is unheard of. Average finish of 7th. Only been done one other time in a 36 race schedule. Harvick in 2020. Harvick only tied Gordons average because of a couple more wins. Not sure another driver will get 30 top tens. Hasnt happened since. Probably gonna be awhile

Rusty Wallace’s 1993 season, which he drove Pontiacs all year. Why show the ‘94 Ford?

Maybe not the most impressive of seasons but Mark Martins 1990 season where he should have won the championship but lost it to Dale Earnhardt from the BS points penatly at Richmond

You were grossly off on Allison's average finish in 1972. It was 5.3, not 8.7. Now Petty's was at 4.7, with 8 wins, 25 top 5s, and 28 top 10s, but he led 2250 less laps and in the Winston Cup Format Allison would win by just 14 points. Imo that's a top 10 season of all-time and definitely better than Gordon in 96
