One of my all time favorite levels has to be "Out of this dimension" in Star Fox on the SNES. That level has the arwing going up against hoards of paper airplanes and the final boss is a giant slot machine. That was one of the first big video game secrets that I discovered as a kid and I loved it. I'm a little disappointed that this level didn't even get an honorable mention.

Duke Nukem 3D had definetely better secret levels than the Launch Facility. For example Lunatic Fringe and Tier Drops. Also what about the secret level of episode 3 of Wolfenstein 3D that is a replica of a Pac-Man level including the Pac-Man ghosts?

Great list, you forgot Green Hill Zone from Sonic Adventure 2 Battle though. Fun level, and RIDICULOUSLY hard to unlock. You had to get an A rank on all 300 challenges in the game, and some of them were CRAZY hard. My friend spend months unlocking that stage! It was literally that hard! I didn't have the skill to do that, not even close.

The blood stained sanctuary from cave story. You have to do several specific tasks in order to get to that level and get the best ending in the game. If you miss just one task, you have to play the game all over again. You would never be able to figure out what you're supposed to do without looking at a guide first.

The Aztec level in Goldeneye isn't secret. There were 20 panels on the screen, and that was the 19th panel. I mean, if that's a secret level, then the Egypt stage with Baron Samedi and the Golden Gun is a secret level as well.

For those who haven't played Tomb Raider 3 - you only need to find 59 secrets because one level has an extra secret (officially 3, but they are actually 4). The reason for this is that the level in question has two routes... but you can actually complete both routes, if you're skillful enough, and thus finish the game with 60 out of 59 secrets :P

+BoTFranK16 In order to reach the painted world you must return to the tutorial area, go back to your cell to pick up the doll, trek too some seemingly random painting in anor londo and select it. Without any in game hints besides the one incredibly cryptic loading screen hint. Similarly, cainhurst can only be found by receiving the cainhurst summons from aeosophoca's clinic.

My personal favorite is the Insomniac Museum in Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal. You had to go to an area off the main path in Metropolis at exactly 3AM to find a taxi that would take you there. It had commentary from the staff of Insomniac about the first 3 games, as well as concept art, a mini-tour of the Insomniac studio & a revenge match with Chainlink.

Donkey Kong Country animal levels are not secret leves. These are bonus stages for collecting 3 golden tokens of any animals, and they aren't unlocked by completing special tasks.

Blaster Master: every other boss battle (boss 2, 4, etc.) you can shoot the boss with the blaster and immediately pause the game. The boss will take damage throughout the pause screen, and after a minute you can unpause the game to find a defeated boss.

I LOVED the blue Yoshi! In every playthrough I always try to get it as quickly as possible. Life is a little easier when you can hover around those darn platforms... Speaking of Mario, there's also the casino in Super Mario RPG. I never could find it, until I had access to the internet. It's a great place to get some coin for the best equipment, and it requires A LOT of special steps, starting with one of the clowns from Booster Tower after the fight.

Starcraft: Brood War has a Secret Level where you play as Zeratul who discovers a hidden moon base where Samir Duran is found managing a Zerg/Protoss hybrid breeding facility. He reveals that he actually is a servant to a power far greater than anything imaginable and that there are countless hybrids scattered across the universe who are about to awake. Pretty much the beginning of Starcraft 2 :D

A tip for Diablo 2. If you have a character specifically to open the cow level, you can open the level, leave the game with that character, re-enter the game with the character you want to play and kill the Cow King without having to worry. :)

i just have to mention a secret level from crash bandicoot 3. you are riding on a motorcycle in the US desert when you come across an alien road sign. drive right over it and you will be warped to a secret level with Coco on her water scooter. this was one of the best secret level entries in my opinion. the alien sign

You missed something very important about the Super Mario World's Star Road. You said something like: "once completed all the levels you can use it as a shortcut". But, you didn't mention that there's and even more hidden level wich is the "Especial". The Star Road was obviously meant to make people believe that is just a shortcut, and most have been just let it "finished" without realizing there's an entrance in the mountain at the center of the star map. Sooo, it's kind of a secret inside another secret. Hence, I thought you would mention it at some point in this video. But you didn't.

also for reptile you cannot block in at least the second round you might be able to in the first round. that also means you can't fight him as sonya blade since you have to block to perform her fatality

Does WatchMojo know the difference between secret and bonus stage? Bonus stages are something you can unlock. Secret stages are accessed either through going into the code and unlocking it, in that case its probably not a finished level, or through some really strange way that doesn't have anything to do with completing/100% the game or quest. Normally being very well hidden, but not necessarily difficult to get to or do. The Cow Level, Launch Facility, and DOOM/Wolfenstein would all qualify in my opinion. I might would give a pass to the 4th Survivor, Tofu Mode, and Aztec Level since they probably are extremely difficult to unlock although I might still consider them Bonus levels. I'm not sure about any of the honorable mentions. The rest of these you can unlock through collectibles or through beating the game.

Wolfenstein 3D had a secret level for each campaign. The only trick was in finding the access elevator. Outlaws from Lucasarts had a secret area which recreated the temple at the start of Indy. Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine had a bonus level which returned to the temple.
