Maybe because, as explained in the video, American audiences were largely unfamiliar with the original Mad Max and Mad Max 2 was originally entitled "The Road Warrior" when it first came out? Also the two films are very different from each other with Max and the post-apocalyptic setting being the only things they have in common.
@005AGIMA8 жыл бұрын
Komic Klepto Interestingly, the original Mad Max was DUBBED over with American accents for the USA audience (and sadly that version was also used in the UK). Re timelines, the original trilogy has Mad Max 1 and 2 occurring post economical global collapse, but pre nuclear apocalypse. Only Thunderdome was post nuclear Apocalypse. However the timeline has changed now due to the comic book series, game, and Fury Road. But I guess they don't count in the context of this conversation. Great movies regardless. But yes, most of the world knew Road Warrior was a sequel if we're honest. The only reason some didn't was because #2 had a bigger budget and more hype. (and no apparent need to be dubbed over lol)
@SteampunkCentral8 жыл бұрын
I count The Silence of the Lambs as a sequel to Manhunter, because that's how the novel was treated. The Silence of the Lambs novel talks about the events that happened in Manhunter quite often.

But the movie "Red Dragon" came out after Silence Of the Lambs (SOTL)...Both it and Manhunter were based upon the same novel in the series, which was titled Red Dragon. Manhunter came out years before SOTL and it sucked so bad, they probably were not able to use the title Red Dragon.

Bruh you cant tell me people didnt knew Riddick was after Pitch black. The story is even connected. The events of Pitch black were the reason Ridick was called on the planet that happen to be under atack keeping the story going. Even the 3rd movie is connected to Pitch black since it traces the same events. You might need better research.
@dayokamaria68025 жыл бұрын
Pitch Black wasn't as huge as Chronicles of Riddick, though. And not many people actually saw Pitch Black before. I was one of those people but once I saw all three movies, I got the connection instantly.

Actually, there's an animated feature called Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury that covers some of the time between the events of Pitch Black and the beginning of Chronicles of Riddick. Without giving too many spoilers, it introduces the character of Toombs and provides some connective tissue that explains part of the later storyline of CoR. Excellent animation and voiced by all the same actors (Diesel, David, Chinlund, etc.) from the live-action features.

One of my friends actually didn't know there were any Batman movies before The Dark Knight, lol. I remember when once in a conversation I called TDK a sequel, and he was like: "WTF? A sequel? There was a movie before that???". Then in another conversation with some other guy, I mentioned the Joker's fall to his death from TIm Burton's Batman, and he overheard and said "Wait, I don't recall Joker dying after he fell in the movie". Guess which movie he was talking about.

There was another 'A Christmas Story' sequal that came out back in 1988 called 'Ollie Hopnoodle's Haven of Bliss.' It starred Jerry O'Connell as Ralphy and followed the family in preparation and travel to a camping trip. It was so so.

Actually "My Summer Story" maintained the title "It Runs In The Family" until 2003 when another more popular movie of the same name came out. It officially was retitled "My Summer Story" in 2006 for it's DVD release. I even remember watching it on TV in 2001 on HBO, and they were still calling it by it's former name.

Add The Color of Money to that list. I was 17 or 18 when it came out and the connection to The Hustler was well covered in the media at the time. Paul Newman still had serious box office stature with my parents' generation at the time, so there was ample reason to play it up.

It Runs in the Family (aka My Summer Story) is probably one of best underrated movie sequels ever. It’s based on the same story of the real “Ralphie,” and very similar in style and tone. I never understood that when I was younger but I loved it just the same. My pops told me it was a sequel when I first saw it and I guess I just didn’t get it at the time because the actors were different but even so it’s a great little flick and if you watch the Christmas Story every Christmas then you should give a watch

It's amazing how many people miss the point of this video. Anyone who sees both movies would know they're sequels. That's not the point. Many of these first movies were either not shown at the time or low budget. So many people saw the sequel first and didn't know there were movies before that one.

In Riddick they reference Pitch Black and maybe even show scenes from it. The whole thing with going to the prison to get the girl was a big flag to let people know their was a preceding story. I dunno how you didnt pick that up.
@EGeorgev8 жыл бұрын
The Black Johnny Gat I just thought those are flashbacks from the past that you see in movies sometimes that are made up for that movie and not scenes from entirely different film.
@cnsmooth8 жыл бұрын
Emil Georgiev Normally I would give you that but the way he speaks about the "girl" would be way to presumptive to assumed the audiences just 'gets' his feelings behind it. TBH I'm talking from the hindsight of knowing Pitch Black existed. I may have been exactly like you if I were in your shoes.

The Riddick Franchise actually has more entries outside the movies media, that are really good an definitely worth a look. - TCoR: Dark Fury (2004) is an animated movie set between Pitch Black and TCoR. - TCoR: Escape from Butcher Bay + Assault on Dark Athena are video games that are prequels to the movie franchise, centered mostly around Riddick's escape from Butcher Bay and introducing the character of Johns

Silence of the Lambs cinematically is not a sequel to Manhunter. Especially since Manhunter was remade in continuity with Silence as Red Dragon. Also Die Hard with a Vengeance is very much connected to the original.
@Evilroco5 жыл бұрын
@ I'd say it has to have more connection to the first/proceeding film than just the same "reality" with shared history/themes/ ,you would hardly call Soldier a sequel to Blade Runner though both are meant to be set in the same "reality" and have a shared history, unless you have a significant continuation of story, character it's only a "spin off" imho .
5 жыл бұрын
@@Evilroco Good points,but unless there are significant flags or film maker info indicating a film is set in the same universe,I don't feel we have to consider some movies as prequels/sequels.I never thought SOLDIER was a sequel to any other movie.This opens up intriguing possibilities for false sequels.Is FORTRESS 1 and 2. a set of sequels to ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK and ESCAPE FROM L.A.,or was ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 a prequel?

Are they smoking their own mojo? 99.9% of these movies were, in fact, highly well known sequels. Apparently the only ones who did not know it was the staff of WatchMojo. Barely any of these movies "hid' their "sequelness." Army of Darkness began directly after Evil Dead 2? EVERYONE knew Two Jakes was a sequel to Chinatown. it was how the movie was advertised and every news outlet said it directly. Damn people, try harder to come up with these top tens. I mean put some actually effort into it.
@wokeaf12428 жыл бұрын
james howe Dude, they were advertised as sequels, called sequels, talked about being sequels. When Two Jakes was announced news was constantly going on about "hey they're making a sequel to Chinatown." I think some of the trailers might be on KZbin, have a look. The premise was "movies that people didn't know where sequels." I know Road Warrior was a Mad Max sequel and I was a teenager when it came out. I knew because they said it directly. And it was actually called "Mad Max: The Road Warrior. Kinda of clue there. Just like Star Wars was just "Star Wars" before the prequels. Maybe two on this list were not obvious or stated sequels. The rest everyone know were sequals to the first or second movies. (I mean seriously, Chronicles of Riddick? They talked about it being the Pitch Black sequel from the moment the movie was announced.)

How can 99,9% of the movies listed here be known sequels? The number of movies displayed here are 10 + a few honorable mentions. Are you saying that a part of a certain movie is not a known sequel or what? Because otherwise your claim that 99,9% of the movies here are know sequels would require
