The problem is, people today don't understand the difference between cultural APPRECIATION and appropriation. Years ago there was a bit of an uproar because some white girl went to her prom in a traditional Chinese dress. Why couldn't she just have liked the dress? It's not like she was claiming to be Chinese. I went on a date to an Indian wedding and we went shopping for a traditional Indian Kurta (formal outfit), and as a white guy nobody cared at all. If anything I got compliments on it. That being said, I haven't found any other occasions to wear it haha
@ReeN199511 ай бұрын
Also notice how it's no problem to take from white peoples cultures. Disney steals German fairy tails among other european cultures. Nobody ever cares when you take Italians, French, German, English, Spanish etc. culture.

I think some people don’t understand what parody and satire is anymore. The Simpsons was originally a satirical look at American 1980s sitcoms which usually had perfect, upper middle class families living in two story suburban houses with white collar jobs. They had no long lasting issues and a moral lesson was always learned at the end. The Simpsons were a dysfunctional family struggling to be perfect. Those early episodes were quite tame compared to what Family Guy and South Park did a decade later. But it really seems people don’t understand what satire or parody is what it does. It’s taken too literally today. Some of the jokes are commenting on ideas and attitudes of the time and likely won’t be completely understood by younger generations who didn’t live during that time so probably won’t get the references or context, if taken out of context then they could be taken they could be interpreted the wrong way. Just like with All in the Family a teen in 2023 would have a harder time understanding the context time period of the 1970s to understand it correctly:

The one thing that's changed over the years that probably has to be acknowledged is this: there really isn't enough of a presumption of good intentions anymore. People use things like "Blazing Saddles", a landmark satire where the racist language is an indicator of stupidity and backwards morals, to justify "Let's do 50 minutes on how strange and hilarious trans people are". (Then blame "woke culture" when Netflix stops throwing money at them.) So the new rule, which ironically was always Mel Brooks' rule in the first place? "Don't punch down." There has to be something to the fact that while Alex Desert has taken over Carl Carlson and other Hank Azaria non-white characters have been taken over by people of the original ethnicity (and Cleveland Brown even got recast with.a KZbin personality that did a good Cleveland impression!) NO Indian actor is willing to do Apu.

@kirikayumura601511 ай бұрын
I don't think they were saying it was offensive, they were saying the situation wouldn't make sense to modern audiences because there other easy ways to watch a movie without going to a theatre. Bart being prohibited from going to a movie theatre wouldn't alone prevent him from seeing the movie because he could find on some streaming service for example. It's a huge stretch to claim that would, "never work on TV now," though.

@bnsyphotography21048 ай бұрын
Yeah that made no sense. They were trying to claim no one went to the cinemas back in the 90s because of VHS stores. Some people just want to go into a cinema, eat popcorn, sneak snacks in, and sit on comfy chairs; watching on a screen bigger than a house, and a sound system better than home. Even today with streaming services I myself like going to the cinema; and movie businesses still release movies in cinemas. It made no sense I agree.

If they say culture is not a costume, then why do other cultures wear western clothing? And isn't wearing other cultures attire a way to respect, experience, welcome, share and mix cultures in order to have unity? If other cultures can wear wester attire and celebrate it, then westerners should too. As well as food. Sharing cultures is what makes us united. Without it, stopping the sharing of cultures, that creates division. Other cultures themselves say they don't mind if say a westerner wears chinese traditional clothing, indian, mexican, african etc. It's celebrating it. From what I see, is that the only people that complain about this apparent "cultural appropriation" aren't of and or from those cultures. And how is Lisa wearing it "cultural appropriation" if it's mentioned she is celebrating the culture? Almost as if these people want division, rather than unity. Also, since I was a kid, my family laughed our arses off at the simpsons all the time. Everything we had was simpsons. Remember laughing at all the gay jokes. I bet even gay people laughed at it too. Because it's comedy. You can make fun of us straight people. Just as long as the joke is funny and delivered right.

You know....some of these seem to be misinterpreted because people don't get irony and the fact it's a cartoon. Isn't the point of the hand stamp stating someone is insane, And then finding the clearly delusional but otherwise gentle guy who has done nothing wrong except thinking he is Michael Jackson, a obvious critic of the mental health system? It certainly doesn't promote it. Even Homer's dismissive attitude toward mental health as a Joe Everyman after being wronged by the system is meant to point out the obvious faults in a funny way.
@MoostachedSaiyanPrince11 ай бұрын
WatchMojo literally doesn't understand nuance or humor. They see jokes about mental health and assume the jokes are directed AT people who have mental disorders. There's a reason why almost every person in this video's comment section is criticizing WatchMojo's video, and it's because they suck at comprehending the content they consume to write their lists.

Of course Dave, a british white man, has a problem with cultural appropriation 😂😂😂 ironic 🙄
@bnsyphotography21048 ай бұрын
Because it doesn't exist. It's celebrating and sharing cultures with each-other. Clothing, food. Not doing so, keeping everyone in their own boxes only divides us more. Sharing and experiencing everyone else's cultures is what keeps us united, and stop conflict. It's actually more racist to pigeon hole people and tell them only that cultures can do that, wear that, eat that. No one else. And wouldn't it be "cultural appropriation" when other cultures are wearing western attire? And what about special holidays like Christmas, Easter, Australia day, Halloween. Are other cultures not allowed to be Santa, celebrate Christmas, dress up in bunny costumes, witches, zombies, vampires, super-heros etc. Because all those things are western traditions. Sounds kind of racist in my books. And no culture and copyright claim a traditional attire, food, hair style and so on, if practically every culture came up with a similar thing at the same time, and or before or after without influence from other cultures. Pasta is predominantly Italian, as well as pizza. Should we stop eating Italian food? No. It's called Cultural Appreciation, not Appropriation.

It is okay to laugh at the absurdity of The Simpsons. It isn't reality. That is the point of the show, at least that is what the show used to be. It has long overstayed its welcome, though. I couldn't keep watching past season 15 before I stopped. That said, the people behind Watch Mojo are a bunch of overly sensitive, hypocritical, dim-witted narcissists. This video of theirs contains so much projectionism and virtue signaling that it hurts just listening to their incessant bloviation. Not to mention that they talk over the clips in their videos instead of just showing us the full context and then commenting on it. Whatever happened to show, don't tell?
