I get excited about Sword and Sorcery each time I see you post it. It's a fun game but sometimes the amount of work in the setup and upkeep is just overwhelming for me solo. It's the kind of thing I'd put up with more in a coop situation. I have my eye of Arena: The Contest. I recently purchased Cthulhu Death May Die and am looking forward to trying it out.

Hey Colin, absolutely love the way you break down these games! One thing I would ask that you add would be to let us know if the miniatures come pre-painted, especially if you show them painted in your videos. Getting miniatures painted is EXPENSIVE (if you don't do it yourself) and if they come pre-painted that is a HUGE step up in value. I find un-painted miniatures a big turn-off in games. Thanks for sharing this list!

Gears of War! God yes, it is excellent. Reichbusters is quite good. I've played it solo, and once you get over the relatively messy rulebook it is really cool. Can't wait for Oathsworn too - it looks great. Deep Madness is also really good, but man it is challenging. Another is Blackstone Fortress, which is really easy and fun solo.

I think I recognized some Descent minis behind you (an Elemental and an Ettin for sure), it's one of my favorite dungeon crawlers ! Did you try Dark Souls the card game ? I don't know if it is a typical Dungeon crawler, but it is an ex-cel-lent card game !! You should try it, especially if you played the video game (one of the bests RPGs of all time !) In my top, I would add Heroes of Terrinoth, which was in your previous top I think, and One deck dungeon. Sylvain

Dungeon crawlers are my favourite type of game and it was good to see your update on these. Gears of War and Galaxy Defenders are two of my most played games and I love the combat systems in both. After watching this I am tempted to get Sword and Sorcery as well. Arena the contest and Tanares Adventures have been pledged on and paid for. I would love to try out Fireteam Zero but here in the UK I haven't seen the core box for sale, just the expansions?!

I brought your top 5 based on your play through and other reviews and Fireteam Zero was the only I felt the need to get rid of. Not that it was bad, just the 3 negatives you pointed out out weighed the good for me. S&S is definitely the best and not that expensive to tip your toe in via the base game. Of course if you loved it you're going to want all the expansions.

My Top 10 DCs? 10 - Machina Arcana 2nd edition 9 - HEXplore it (complete trilogy) 8 - Gloomhaven 7 - Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle-Earth 6 - Folklore the Affliction 5 - Okko Chronicles 4 - Hellboy: The Board Game 3 - Skull Tales: Full Sail! 2 - Descent: Journeys into the Dark 2nd Edition 1 - Mansions of Madness 2nd Edition I backed Tanares (although I'm hesitant about the required Arena), Oathsworn (story!), Aeon Trespass (tile exploration!), Solomon Kane (most innovative gameplay), The Everrain (Cthulhu + pirates!), Middara (juicy content), Assassin's Creed (sneaking around Venice), Chronicles of Drunagor (table presence), Arkeis (OMG! steampunk Egypt? I'm curious how far into the campaign for Galaxy Defenders you got. I found it to be fairly immersive with the branching story line based on how well you completed each mission. Plus, the follow up expansions takes the story even further into the lore. Great game!

Yeah I probably align most with bairnt but I’m thinking many of the games I love would be considered adventure such as 7th continent, journeys in middle earth, mansions of madness, touch of evil, fortune and Glory, Arkham horror, eldritch horror, rubebound, tainted grail etc The dungeon crawls I would include on my list would include shadows of Brimstone, folklore the affliction, Cthulhu Death May Die, sword and sorcery, descent and imperial assault.

Thanks a couple new ones for me. Dice Heroes funded 2017. Interestingly, I just very late pledged an old 2016 KS called Dungeon Crusader. (Think late pledge closes on 4/27) Rolling the dice on this one, but seems to about to enter production. We shall see, but looks like designed well for a solo experience.

Regarding Wrath of Ashardalon, it's not so much that I think it's a better design than Gloomhaven, it's just that I don't value Gloomhaven as much as my other games when it comes to solo. Besides the bookkeeping being an utter chore (even with apps), I simply have other games that provide what Gloomhaven does, but better, quicker and/or more thematically. Eg If I want a campaign, I'll stick with S&S or Descent. If I want a puzzly brain burner, I'll play Mage Knight Also, Wrath of Ashardalon and Legend of Drizzt get bonus points for being games my wife will play but WoA has a dragon so, you know, maths. 😆 I don't know how you'll find Descent 2e now that you've been exposed to S&S and others. I still love it but the criticisms it receives regarding the miss probability are fair.

I was wondering if you have any experience with Zombicide Invader (Or other zombicides) as a fun tactical dice chucking game. I quite enjoy it!. Also it may not be on your radar as a dungeon crawl, but I put Nemesis in that catagory and even as a solo experience it's my clear nr. 1.

Well this is how it went for me. Checked you video and decided I needed a new game. Remembered I didn’t like Shadowrun: Crossfire so checked off Dragonfire. Checked around and couldn’t really find most of the games locally. Decided to check on dragonfire since you had a playthrough. Really liked what I saw. Only one I had played of that list is Middara and it did not do anything for me. The anime theme and the overcomplex rules just didn't jive for me. I have heard Death May Day is similar to Hellboy so I might try and pick that one up at some point! Thanks for watching!

@@OneStopCoopShop Death May Die has no campaign but a module system, it is really well done and lots of fun. Lots of dice, decent mitigation, but a fantastic sense of escalation as the more you advance you get more insane, which gets you closer to loosing but makes you more and more powerful. Very cinematic. Big Trouble in Little China is totally underrated, it has a dice allocation mechanism, which greatly combines luck and a more "euro-y" feel... Very cinematic as well.

So for me personally it is not a solo game. The full mit of cards for all characters can be very overwhelming. however I LOVE it as a co-op game, I think I am on my 56th play of it? So yeah I love the game just not for solo for me!

I think lots of people value your lists as they consider games, so I think would be very helpful, for viewers, to note why the super popular ones might not be there, even if it's only in the description. I got Glass Road based on your video and am now considering what my next one will be. I'm thinking Dungeon Alliance :) Gloomhaven, for me, is my favorite solo, because it's a great puzzler in a dungeon type setting. Perhaps it's easier for me, because I did read on-line, what a good pairing of two characters would be, and that's how I play it. So I didn't have to struggle through "Which characters should I pick?" Anyway, that helps. Thanks for sharing and the videos. They all look fun.

Awesome video. Very well done. Obviously you have not included GD with its addons, the NPCs, the epic (and much more intense in comparison to S&S) boss battles, the diggers that hide below the surface etc. etc. ;) But nonetheless amazing video. :) I have done a 1vs.1 challenge (you may remember your podcast) against myself for this genre and this became my list: 1.) Secrets of the lost tomb 2.) Sword & Sorcer - Arcane Portal + Darkness Falls with the hardcore rules from the recent Ancient Chronicles storybook (Gates of hell + Fragile) 3.) Galaxy Defenders (I argued about it in the video why this has so much exploration it it, that it counts as a DC) 4.) Machina Arcana 5.) Perdition´s Mouth 6.) Secret Unknown Stuff - Escape from Dulce 7.) Lobotomy (I argued about it why the possible to play multiple scenarios at once create a deep sense of exploration, that it counts as a DC) 8.) Shadows of Brimstone (the dull mechanics really start to stuck after a while + balance issues with Wave 2) 9.) Darklight - Memento Mori (almost the same annoying dull (although more streamlined) mechanics with balance issues) The "big" titles like Gloomhaven or Descent 2 would never made it on a top list in this genre for me. They fail on both aspects: Interesting mechanics and fluff. I am really excited about Chronicles of Drunagor, Altar Quest, S&S Ancient Chronicles in the first place, but there are so many games coming (Oathsworn etc.). Exciting times for dungeon crawl fans. :) Keep up the good work, Colin. :)

Secrets of the lost tomb has a great sense of exploration (according to the dungeon AND story), it offers looting and leveling for your hero and it implements fighting against monsters (and bosses). All those aspects are crucial to me to make a game a dungeon crawl game. Lost Tomb is a full on DC to me and not an adventure game like Runebound, Fortune & Glory, Dungeon Degenerates etc. at all. :)

A castle/tower Defense coop with amazing hero development, cooperation and boss battles. Genious design and it causes me to treat all the other Castle defense games (Defenders of the realm, B-Sieged, Alien Uprising) as old "Monopoly" kinda games. ;)

What do you think about the cooldowns and table space for ability cards in Sword & Sorcery? Personally I am a big fan of rotating cards to communicate different information or change a card state, it is simply a good way to use existing card space, just like tapping a card or flipping it over. Lightseekers and the Age of Sigmar card game both use it as well. However, those games have a lot more space between the cards, whereas in S&S they are all close together in a line.

I personally LOVE the power cool down mechanic. Someone on the channel suggested using action tokens to track them and I feel that is a great idea. That way no worries about the cards being to close together!

Love these Colin. A couple I've never heard of, but when I heard the "Why you might not like this..." parts, I understood why I'd never heard of them. I love that you had galaxy Defenders and Sword & Sorcery on the list. Some people say they're the same game, just different theme, but I never found that to be true. Yes, they have some similarities, but when you play them, they feel so different. Everything you say about Dungeon Alliance, says I should like it. I may have to reacquire it and try it again. I wonder if the packs would help. You didn't like Myth, so on the other hand, maybe we'll agree to disagree :) Any particular criteria for your dungeon crawler definition or do you just go by feel? I'm not sure, I could define it. Also, I love the format of why you might or might not like each game. Well done!

I totally agree on Galaxy Defenders, I personally feel they did a great job differentiating the two games. One is highly tactical, the other is much more adventure/dungeon crawl style. You like Mage Knight and you like Fantasy. That mean you will like Dungeon Alliance :) Trying to define dungeon crawlers is hard. Since I am doing 2 lists, I made the Dungeon Crawlers game that focus a lot more on combat, and adventure games more about exploration. But honestly I have no idea. . @@OneStopCoopShop Sounds like you went for how they feel, which is what I'd do. I don't worry about strict definitions to decide. I had Dungeon Alliance so it's not like I didn't try it. It just never called to me from the shelf. And you know I like campaigns, although like you I love Fireteam Zero! One thing that you might consider is listing other games you've played that didn't make the list. I can think of games, I'd include and I'd wonder if you hadn't played them or didn't like them.

Never played Fire Team Zero, but it sounds very simplistic dungeon crawl like the D&D games (Castle Ravenloft, Legend of Drizzt, Wrath of Arshardalon etc.) Would I be correct in this assessment?

Hmmm not really, in Fireteam Zero you have a hand of cards and you use them for the combat actions you take. You can also use them for reactions as well. I would suggest watching a bit of one of my playthroughs you will see how it is much more involved than the D&D adventure games. BUT if you are looking for a more straightforward dungeon crawler, I think the D&D games are great!

One Stop Co-op Shop Thanks Colin, not bothered about miniatures or not, I have both... set up is my main issue, as small kids will tend to trash anything left out. I’ve played the D&D adventure system games, which I found simple low thought process plays, but longer set up... I’ve got S&S (after seeing your early play through) but haven’t even dared approach it yet! And recently picked up Set a Watch after seeing that on here too, that works quite well for my quick set up & short play criteria. Things are not too busy here in the my region of the UK, but still a lot of tension. Hopefully things will start calming down for you guys on the other side of the Atlantic soon. Me too. I have it and it is great. One of the best Coops (I think it is better with others so they can share the story, and you have to decide together on what to do). Took me a bit to get used to the app, but when you do it is fantastic. Very thematic story-telling

Great list Collin! I did not like Dungeon Alliance, and it is mainly because the endgame format. The objectives are not appealing and at the end seems like a lot of work just to have a bunch of experience points. The combat and exploration are great but seeing the 3 by 3 grid completed is not rewarding enough.

Hey Sebbe, here are some of the ones I've been playing solo and enjoying: - Arkham Horror LCG (there's a really slick mod that lets you import decks straight from Arkhamdb.com) - Too Many Bones - Gloomhaven (or the Frosthaven preview if you like) - By Stealth and Sea (I previewed this one on the channel a while back - nice and straightforward little war game) I've also been playing a ton of The Crew, but that isn't soloable, sadly. -Mike

Interesting choices, I love Sword and Sorcery so no complaints there, personally I feel S&S is a really solid modern take on the DC genre, its AI is so well developed and the further you go though the better it becomes, I can't wait to start talking about AC as I think its both more difficult and the AI will interact with other monsters even better. I enjoy both editions of descent as well and I'm just getting into Shadows of Brimstone so I'm surprised not to seem either of them here or Gloomhaven which everyone tends to put at the top end of DC, which I don't actually agree with, I like the game and I cannot apprecaite the design enough but it doesn't do the DC itch for me. Arena looks interesting I've got a placeholder PM access pledge down but I'm not sure if I'll be ale to back or not right now but given infinate money I'd be all over it. Out of interest what sort of method did you use to determine if something was a Dungeon Crawler or not, I'm a HUGE fan of Middara but I wouldn't call it a DC but many do so I wondered if some of your choices are based because you didn't consider some titles dungeon crawlers. Regardling S&S its not just red enemies that roll defence, its just not until much later on do you meet enemies who'm roll defence dice, as monsters get harder they get better defenses.

Brimstone I actively dissliked, haven't played Descent yet. I am about to start recording the first session of the Arcane Portal Side Quests! Wish me luck! I tried to pick games that were focused on combat and moving through objectives for this. Hard to define a dungeon crawler really!

@@OneStopCoopShop Arcane Portal are fantastic, great AI, really great those Fire tokens will stack up and potions of fire resistance will eat all your funds. Don't forget unlike other conditions fire tokens stack, you can have loads and they all hit you at the same time.. Expect some firery deaths! Does that mean you've recorded mission 5 & 6 then? Exciting can't wait to watch them and see which end mission you went with! Regarding Brimstone did you play the original cores or the later stuff, the original cores not only have meh mini's but the AI of the enemies is dull and the game isn't very tactical. If you get the chance I recomend sitting down for a game of Forbidden Fortress - not only are the minis a world better the characters are more interesting and the AI /tiles are vastly more dynamic. There's some great stuff for the original game as well, things like Trederra where the enemy stays behind cover and engages in a shooting match, but they have explosives and machine guns cause it world war 1 plus darkstone tech levels.. I avoided brimstone for a long time because of the original core games but the expansions material and Forbidden fortress fixes so much of the game and its a really good dungeon crawler...

@@OneStopCoopShop As I said I wouldn't recomend buying in if you didn't like the Original SoB but if you know someone with a copy of Forbidden Fortress I would recommend asking to join for a session, but on the otherhand its a hobby game like KDM so if you don't have a spare $1000 in your pocket might be best to avoid it. lol. Good luck, you'll love those quests though, they are fantastic and the enemies lol, you wait they are super intense and you'll need to think, expect to see some ghost action but that's good you don't want a cake walk!

@@OneStopCoopShop Kick-Ass is a really fun and enjoyable game with solo mode. It's better than its reputation. There is a map with lot's of minis, deckbuilding, character-developing. The main reason why I like it is the player's character is a human being with a job (or money problems). Table, character-develop, minis, deckbuilding, solo or co-op mode, realistic atmosphere, not easy but fun gameplay and great mechanics. Very underrated game.
