@@NotSoSerious69420 I would argue that both are 2 mana sorceries, effectively, against a token deck, since you're not going to want to play them out before you activate them in most cases, as the token opponent just will stop committing to the board until you use it. So the main benefits to Explosives being 0 Mana value would be for stuff like Urza's Saga. But Ratchet Bomb has the advantage that cost reduction effects or Sun Titan style recursion are more common, and tend to synergize with decks that benefit from the fact that the effect is stapled on an artifact.

I think it's kind of weird that you didn't mention some popular single target red burn spells, like Lightning Bolt or Shock. Sure you see them a lot on websites like EDHREC, but generally even red burn in EDH don't play spells like that, for obvious reasons. For spells like those to see play usually they have to either cantrip, hit all opponents, be repeatable (such as having storm on it), or are a commander. Also, funny that you made a spot specifically for planeswalkers since there is the deck archetype built around them (Superfriends) and certain planeswalkers are allowed to be used as commanders themselves.

Wow, just a disappointing amount of wrong info in this one. Yes, Planeswalkers are a mixed bag in Commander. However, when you make a deck dedicated to having as many of them on board as possible (Superfriends), some really janky things can happen even in Commander. I'm personally partial to Narset Superfriends, and when your board becomes "I cast everything for free, and Proliferate for everything I cast, and use multiple Ultimates each turn, AND I get multiple turns back to back" people literally get angry and quit... and that's assuming you don't luck your way into Approach of the Second Sun early on and win the game after attacking twice with your Commander. Engineered Explosives is a solid card. Yes, it shines against decks that crap out tokens, but what a lot of people fail to realize is that it's fantastic to just gain control of the game's tempo... solely because so many mana rocks cost the same. If you play at a high level, you're bound to see stuff like Sol Talisman, Chrome Mox, Mox Amber and Mox Diamond. 2 mana to blow all of those up for everyone? Amazing. Even if it's not super competitive, you'll still see Sol Rings, Arcane Signets, Talismans, etc. 4 mana to nuke all that for everyone? Still pretty solid. You can even see some really good decks running Chromatic Lantern, Commander's Sphere, Decanter of Endless Water, Heraldic Banner, Mana Geode and more. 5 mana to destroy all that? It'll definitely piss people off. Not a BAD card at all. Kolaghan's Command sees a good amount of play in 2-4 color decks that have both Red and Black. Yes, the typical usage it'd have in Modern or Pioneer, to destroy both a creature and artifact, isn't likely to be used... but the utility of having 2 effects for 3 mana and ALL of them being good is just solid enough to see fairly regular use. No, it won't be in every deck like it is in other formats, but it definitely isn't BAD. Agree with the rest though. Just the first 3rd that was frustrating.

While Ruric Thar is definitely a good comparison to Eidolon, I'd say even more so in commander, Painful Quandary is a card with a similar effect I've seen in play much more often, possibly because it's easier to slot into decks being mono black than the red-green Ruric Thar. I feel like Jace is the perfect rep for the 10th spot. Planeswalkers do see play, but usually in very specific decks, like Superfriends. Jace, however, has two really big issues. First, his abilities scale poorly in multiplayer (only targeting one player and not in ways especially meaningful in commander) and the fact that his ultimate, for all its power, can’t be used immediately if doubling season is down like many planeswalkers, as this is a common tactic in superfriends. And even with doubling season, you couldn’t even use it on the next turn.

The problem is that while an 8/8 Flyer will CLOSE games of Modern or Legacy, in Commander it's just a slightly bigger than average beater that you had to jump through a bunch of hoops for and is extremely vulnerable to a boardwipe. Something I’d put on the list is “counter target spell unless its controller pays X” cards. Cards like Daze, Spell Pierce, and Mystical Dispute are super competitive and playable in Legacy, Modern, and Standard because those formats have tight curves. Commander usually doesn’t have as tight a curve, your opponents often have enough mana to pay the cost. This is especially true when you consider that, in Commander, you generally need to be more stingy with your removal and counters, since going 1 for 1 in Commander isn’t as good as in 1v1 formats, so if you save the counter for something important, like a win-con, your opponent VERY probably has the mana to pay it off.

Man lands analysis is straight up wrong here. Though Hall of the Storm Giants is going to be a rarer choice, since usually you go with the dual colored man lands and ones with lower activation cost, man lands are a big thing in commander still. They are blockers when you need them (particularly the ones that include white and have flying or reach), get around a lot of kill spells (non-land permanent) survive most field wipes since they aren't creatures when those are being cast. Hall is one of the worst with that 7 mana activation but I see Stirring Wildwood, Raging Ravine, Celestial Colonade and even Den of the Bugbear and Cave of the Frost Dragon in EDH decks.

Wow, so very wrong in almost every aspect... I would agree if you are talking about CEDH, the smallests part of the format. Competitive Commander as it is more commonly known. Only four cards on this list are accurate... So either you talked to a CEDH player, you looked up decks on EDHREC, or you don't fully grasp commander? Jace... Sees play all the time. When he doesn't it's usually cause he is so potent too. There is a weird rule in commander that has you put threats on board to keep players from hitting your life, and his third effect is useful enough and cheap enough that if you can keep him on board you will benefit. This is one of two exceptions on this list that will see play in CEDH cause some people like this guy in decks like Urza cause it's easy to cast and can remove a Vampiric Tutor search. Use to play in a CEDH league before covid and the guy in CHARGE of the league had this in three of his decks.

You don't have to uptick the Vial. But it seems like one of those cards that isn't good if you don't get it in your starting hand. I think Sinkhole might start to see a little more play over time as targeted land removal is becoming ever more valuable as there start to be more and more individual lands that need to be answered, and mass land destruction is still a taboo. Being able to Sinkhole a Gaea's Cradle, Vault of Catlacan, or Field of the Dead is really good, though being sorcery speed does still hurt the card, and might by where you'd still see more effects like Strip Mine or Wasteland being played instead. Also not on the list, and not exactly BAD in commander.... but I'd add that the Onslaught and Zendikar fetch lands are FAR less powerful in commander. Generally speaking, your fetch lands in this format are just there to fix your colors, since you rarely will combo them with something like Brainstorm to shuffle away the cards in hand you don't need. And to that end, for most players and decks, cards like Evolving Wilds will work just as well. Additionally not being able to run multiple copies of of shock lands means there are fewer targets for those lands to find (though that list is increasing) They really just seem to be there more, at least in my view, as a way of signaling to other players that you're trying to play a high power level deck.
@garcardosotan6172
@garcardosotan6172 Жыл бұрын
Rule 0 for commander means you don't target lands. This is why beast within is so good cause you can take out a Cabal Coffers, or anything else if your opponents are not running power 9 lands.
@anthonydelfino6171
@anthonydelfino6171 Жыл бұрын
@@garcardosotan6172 Not sure what you're referring to as none of the Power 9 are lands... But I would say that more accurately the unspoken rule is no MASS land destruction. Targeted I think people are more and more okay with. Almost every deck I have now I run a Wasteland and a Strip Mine since there's always some land at the table that has to be answered. Field of the Dead is another that can be a big problem unless you remove it, and most people at the table will agree with you if you say that. But even before then, I was still always running cards that could just incidentally hit lands like Beast Within you mentioned and Chaos Warp, and no one was having major problems when you did use those to hit lands.

Thoughtseize and similar effects are great in commander. The ability to check whether opponent has interaction to your play is very good. The reason why Seize don't see play is that it is a very skill testing card, it is not a "fun"* card and it costs €€. *I don't mean unfun just that it isn't very exiting to play for the average player. LOL Though Hall of Storm Giants is no staple, it's definitely not BAD. It's even an ideal land for mono blue or 2-color decks - a land that has late game (or post board wipe) usage. People constantly run the worst MDFC lands, even in 3-color or freaking 5-color decks, so how is this bad?
@MrZerodaim
@MrZerodaim 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Hall isn't as good of an endgame clock as it is in other formats, but I wouldn't put it on this list. It's still a 7/7 body, you can take a hit or two, but it adds up quickly. Being a land by default and having ward 3 when animated means it's pretty hard to remove. Also, while the 6 mana is a steep activation cost for just one use, many decks can quickly get way more than needed and, here's the big thing, you don't even have to activate it for it to be useful! Just keep the mana open. No one's going to send their creature at you when you can make a 7/7 and kill it for free. And if nothing happens, just use some instant to draw etc. Also, holding 7 mana in blue represents Cyclonic Rift, so there's no drawback really. For the low cost of entering tapped when you've already finished the early game ramp, that's well worth it.

Hall can't really be bad, as its floor is as a ETB tapped blue land, but a 7/7 for 7 each turn is pretty bad, and ward basically just makes up for the fact that if they kill it they stone rain you, so they now at least have to pay the cost of that stone rain. But Hall is good because if you get to 7 mana in most formats, you probably don't have much to do with the mana at that point anyway and a 7/7 with upkeep 7 will get you there, but in commander there are a lot more playable 7+ mana spells, not to mention 5 ot 6 drops that you'd still rather spend your mana on, so it's a lot closer to its floor than in other formats.

Why would they? Planeswalkers are fine in Commander, you just play ones that have immediate payoffs rather than hoping they'll survive a full turn cycle. i loved this video, if somehow you wouldn't mind throwing together a "part 2" or a "10 to 6" list it would be amazing. About thoughtseize though, yes it's least likely to see any play in commander but these types of effects area actually really good when there's only one or two blue players and yourself either one of those players or not playing blue. Cards like Thoughtseize, Duress, Dread Fugue, and Grief are basically blacks version of counterspells but as you noted they are terrible unless you know what cards are in your opponents hands and there's only a few artifacts that let you even look at any cards reliably. Urza's Glasses, and Lanturn of Insight. Unless you play blue then you can literally just play Telepathy or Zur's Weirding along with other options. i swear blue does everything.

LMAO "Lots of staples that are good in Magic" Do you even know how popular Commander is compared to old Magic? More people learn about the rules of Magic through Commander than anywhere else - and they play more Commander than any other format. Part of that is that Standard has been a dumpster fire for a few years and is only recently beginning to recover, but most of it is because Magic is just too expensive and "solved" in the eternal formats for new players to easily get into them. The Pandemic ensured that Draft wasn't a thing long before the weak sets of the last few years did, and while Kamigawa and now Dominaria are starting a resurgence of Draft, even that format hasn't healed yet.
