I’m originally from Colorado and my hypothesis regarding IQ is that one has to be smarter to survive in a cold climate. In the south you can just lay around and fruit falls out of the trees. In the north one has to plan ahead for shelter, food, clothing etc just to survive the winter.

it goes through history too. it’s part of why africa, despite its natural resources and potential, is always taken advantage of by nations with a colder climate. it was colonialism in europe, now it’s china and the silk road.

To be extremely successful a high IQ is helpful. However, IQ is only one facet of a high preforming individual. Emotional intelligence, mental toughness, motivation, perseverance, social skills, as well as opportunity all have significant impact on success. I meet many a high IQ scientist type that were social blivits, tunneled in vision and utterly unmotivated. Moreover, being very smart, often you'll find the world and its social trends very disturbing.

I suspect that a lot of innovative culture associated with Minnesota originates from WWII. The federal government started by tapping the milling industry to produce food for the war effort. Minnesota was safely inland and had access to the Mississippi River and the Great Lakes. Minnesota's role was expanded to include both light and heavy manufacturing for the war effort. After the war, Minnesota continued to host all kinds of research and development.

For the record, I taught civil engineering for 28 years at 2 universities. I’m also a licensed surveyor. I’m not at all smart… I was only persistent …. and I knocked up the College Dean’s daughter. I’m not smart, or have a high IQ. I was just good at doing what I did to get ahead of everybody else. By accident. And I have a PhD in engineering. The whole concept of “you need a high IQ to get into a university” is at best.. a myth. Or a downright ignorant thing to even think about saying. I’ve been married to the Engineering College dean’s daughter for over 40 years. I never had a high IQ my whole life. Terrible benchmark to judge IQ from. I know welders, landscapers and even janitors whom I feel have a higher IQ than I have.

Once again, Utah beats Washington. Only bad part is that this IQ in no way equates to good driving. The average being a point above the middle mark for our species isn't that impressive.

The difference between #1 and #2 is like a fraction of a point. The year before these latest rankings MA was #1 and NH was #2. Don’t know if this is true but I heard the idea of IQ tests comes from the eugenics movement. Whether or not that’s true, I think like any test, they are limited in what they claim to measure

I grew up in Wisconsin and have spent my adult life living in Minnesota. I do tend to think of Wisconsinites as being rather bright and inventive, but they don't tend to be as "bookish" as Minnesotans. The population of Wisconsin is more rural, so I think they put a higher premium on practical skills. Of course, I grew up in rural Wisconsin, so I guess I could make some off-color comments about the effect that alcohol consumption has on IQ.

Your comment about Massachusetts and their excellent universities is true but interesting in that California has some of the best colleges and universities in the country but their primary and secondary education is poor.
