Top 10 Tech Tree Ships To Grind In 2020

This is probably the number one recurring question on my channel, "flamu what ship or line do you recommend grinding". Well here you go, my take on the Top10 (more like top12) ships to grind right now, most of them not just because they are strong, but because they offer something uniquely fun.

Hence the lack of for example carriers, I'm fully aware the Hakuryu is probably the strongest ship in the game by a mile, but I find them uninteresting and boring to play, hence no CVs on the list. Pretty solid universal list of the best ships to play right now. I'd probably switch the Venezia for the Zao for beginners, but pretty much a snapshot of the most fun stuff on the servers.

@@NachoManRandySandwich Venezia came in patch 0.8.10, early November last year, roughly 8 months ago. The veterans and comp players had it in weeks, some even in days since they have so many resources (fxp and flags). The ship hasn't been changed one single bit, it's exactly the same as on release. Yet it was gloriously absent in CB 7, then CB 8, and finally even KOTS which was 3 months ago, 5 months after the ship release when you damn well know everyone who wanted it, had it. It was a rare pick, very niche, but as soon as CVs were added to the mix the ship is overpowered? That's barking up the wrong tree, the issue is that a Carrier can literally make up the missing utility of an entire 7v7 team, making a ship that has traded all utility for other strengths, like the Venezia, seem broken. Haku AP bombers also dumpster any ships that could do well against it, making them irrelevant. TL;DR blaming a ship that has been unchanged for 8 months for the current issues in CBs is losing sight of the forest for the trees.

Cruisers and DDs on point, thinking almost the same :-) CVs are cancer, subs will kill the game in my opinion, russians get special class of there own etc One change on the BB side. NC great ship, grind the Colorado and get ready for fun with the NC and then ramp it up with the Iowa Out of all the tier8 BBs, my pic is still the Amagi, don't know why but that ship just works really well for me Keep in mind I'm not that good at playing BBs, American line was first to tier10 then came the "balance" line (read russian) and now the IJN line Dough I'll grind any more BBs after the Yamato, I just don't see a point and I'm really sick of JBs and Georgias and Ohios filling the MM Has anyone else noticed this? Silver ships are almost gone from high tiers, JBs, Smolensks etc dominate the MM Where do people get so much coal and steel? I only have one coal ship and it's gonna take me an ice age to get more

Des Moines is better than the hindenburg maybe some bias in that statement but the DM is just the king of dps. DDs are a joke to it. Cruisers showing you their broadside will die instantly because of the reload rate and running demolition expert and some fire setting signals make HE equally as good as the AP, it makes torps overrated

Zazume I’ve been saying that since I got her, I still say it as I played for 80 matches and become #1 place on the ship leaderboard. Funny thing is, not so many people believe me at that time and I just keep playing her with my unique captain build and laugh at their stupid tears instead.

Don't forget that the 113mm AP has a short fuse threshold (19mm), so even if a DD broadsides (which usually means other DD AP won't arm) the Daring will still get full pens. I think Shimakaze is thin enough that the shells go out the other side before they detonate, but other than that the Daring will tear any DD apart

If you think 62kts is "very slow" you're either playing a lot of Halland, or you've never seen the Black's torpedoes. 62kts won't break records but it's a decent/average speed, with the IJN gunboats having 67kts torps. Daring can use AP thanks to the improved ricochet angles, it's turret layout makes it easier to go nose-in and still retain 67% of it's DPM (Kita and Haru nose-in have 50% and 40% of their DPM respectively), Daring also has 360 degree turrets, so it can change the side it's shooting from without having to wait for the turrets, it also has a hydro to give advance warning of torpedoes, and has a faster rudder shift and tighter turning circle than the IJN gunboats, so it has an easier time dodging the torps that are spotted. Kita and Daring have practically the same concealment, but Daring can have RPF where a Kita is likely to have IFHE, giving Daring the information advantage, and Daring will have a concealment advantage over Haru, making it easier for the Daring to control the fight. Daring can also disengage using smoke more comfortably due to the 6 charges and short duration of the smoke consumable, whereas the IJN Gunboats only get 3. There's plenty more I could mention, but the TL;DR is that if you're in a Daring and constantly losing 1v1 fights against the Kita and Haru you need to git gud

Great video! Here's an idea for another one: There are a lot of unique commanders (both quest ones and for-dobloon ones) and too many choices to put them in (Kuznetsov?). What's your opinion on which ship is the best match for all the unique commanders?

Yamamoto for Yamato + Legendary and Harugumo line, Kuznetsov for all russian except smoke DDs, The French Unique Commander(UC) for Kleber or Henri, British UC (the latest one) for DD or Minotaur line and for the CV u better grinding Hakuryu, Lutjens for 2ndaries BBs or Hindenburg but i will choose Hindenburg, Halsey for BBs and both Cruiser. . . . its my opinion, u can disagree

Yamamoto - either Yamato with legendary mod (improved expert marksman makes turret traverse better) or Harugumo (most likely to get first blood, improved preventative maintenance is best on DDs) Kuznetsov - works on anything but probably best on Kremlin, Stalin, or Moskva for faster consumable cooldown. Also these three have more hp so the odds of dying before you get use of your heal are better Halsey - best on Des Moines, faster expert loader synergizes really well and not too difficult to get confederate with fires and strong AP Cunningham - either Daring or Conqueror, getting Witherer with either isn't impossible Auyboyneau - definitely Kleber/Marceau, you get more HP and it makes more sense to get captures and potential damage with them Lutjens - Hindenburg, 140 main battery hits is easy and you benefit from both improved EM and PM Sansonetti - Venezia obviously Jerzy - Halland/Smaland obviously

Flamu, the blatant bias towards the North Carolina is forgiven. I grinded that one a few months ago after the recommendation and I love the ship. I did the New Mexico via coop battles and then I had to do the Colorado. Dreaded it, but it forced me to learn central battleship positioning, which I now always try to do. It did end up enjoying the Colorado, yes really. Then the North Carolina. Well, I absolutely love using that ship in a central position and sneak up on unsuspecting ships before unleashing salvo's. I don't think I got so many devastating strikes with any other ship. In general I don't shoot beyond 15km because of the flight time. Below 14km those guns are so satisfying. Also pre-emptive congrats on the 100K. Just 300 to go right now.

Fiji is one of my absolute favorite ships. I love the acceleration as well, it gets from 0-30 knots in 10 seconds. It's insane. Great concealment, heavy damage, good torps, smoke, good heal... At T7 it's unbeatable.

Worth noting that another reason why Venezia was the number 1 pick this last season of CBs was because with the lack of DDs you need something to cap, and as it turns out the fuel smoke lasts exactly the time you need to get a cap in CBs.

Coming from someone who has played the Venezia a lot in clan battles, I can tell you why it's used. So we nearly made it to Hurricane this season and the Venezias usage is based on a few things. 1- Ability to kite (using double steering gear upgrade it dodges shells very well) 2- The usefulness of the smoke. You can disengage when you have overextended and need to turn away quickly. You can enter cap and smoke, and based on the different timers in clan battles, you can cap with 1 full smoke duration (unless reset). 3- SAP eats Stalingrads for breakfast. If aimed correctly, you cam wack them for 8-12k a slave depending on what he's giving you to shoot at. And 4th but not that important- She has torps on both sides that are unelectable until 1.1km. For those of you who don't know, THAT'S LOW! You can have a set on the same side reloaded as that side is still in the water, use them! Chasing a Venezia is a pain in the ass when you have 4 sets of torps out that you can't evade is ANNOYING. Now, given this seasons clan battle meta of Carriers, this is what it's used for (some things obviously never changed with or without a CV). The Henri isn't a great pick now due to it's nerfs, and Venezia can eat it up if aimed at it's bulky superstructure. Consequently, Venezia is it's replacement #FixHeneri (I still like her, just not as much). I also run Venezia in randoms a bunch to "Finish amoung the the top 3 on your team in winning battles" emblem. I have about 60 so far and a 68% win rate and 2700 PR. So coming from a good players perspective, the Venezia can teeder on OP, but I'd say it's just Strong. In fact, I hate fighting another one amd would rather aim at slower, bigger targets to ensure good damage.

Just grind to Jutland, and after reading some posts dated 2 years ago I decided to re-spec for IFHE and give up RPF which I really enjoyed in Lightning, although the stats values in the port say HE has 19 mm pen. Now.......happily return to RPF

Hey, i have a question, how it works with animations of AA guns and secondaries? When i am shooting at ships, the secondaries rotate and visibly shoot but when planes attack, the dont move at all. Also how it works, when ships main guns are also AA guns(halland, lightning and such)? I never see halland guns rotate at planes. Do you have to switch guns and secondaries into "AA mode" or somethink? Thanks for explanation!

No need to switch between aa and secondary. AA is treated as a damage radius around your ship and the firing of aa guns is not modeled like secondaries. That means that a gun that is for both secondary and aa will technically be firing at both at the same time. You can turn off secondary and aa fire with the p key. This will help you keep from being spotted if your as range is greater than your spotted by air range.

Say Halland, your AA consist of your AA only and Main guns. While it does not give you a visual effect, your AA damage includes the damage from you main guns too. Same for Battleship's with secondaries, in the game you secondaries will LOOK silent or even fire at other ships, but when enemy planes are nearby, your AA damage will always be full (including AA guns and secondaries etc. The things you see in Port under the AA tab).

Thanks flamu i'm a casual player this will help.. i have been debating the Yamato for a while now i have the ARP? fleet Kongo and t7 cruiser they're alright but i didn't know if i wanted to grind the line, i might use free exp to get up to higher tiers as i'm currently doing towards the NC already! (though my goal was the t10 in that line) I haven't played many BB's outside of those t5 so NC would be a good one to get used to on your reconmendation. Could also use a guide on how to slap out Captain exp? i'm still at 15-14 skill captains and its ugh.. swapping around a few as i go up the torp DD japanese line, and CV line but the credit cost to pay the higher tiers is rough if you don't have a decent game.

My favorite tech tree ship now is the new T10 Soviet heavy cruiser, Petropavlovsk. This thing is a beast, with it's fully 360 rotating high caliber main guns, that are almost laser accurate, which are powerful enough to citadel BBs. Nothing is more enjoyable than getting multiple citadel hits on T10 BB monsters like Yamato, and Kremlin. This cruiser is very tanky, and quite stealthy for being a big heavy cruiser. I always wanted a Stalingrad, but just can't get near the amount of steel to get it. The Petropavlovsk is a good alternative, and well worth the grind.

Myself i really like the ZAO , because you can dodge so many shells at long/medium range, people don't really want to close the distance because of the 12km torps and the 9.9km concealment. But i feel like you really need some map awarness, knowing who is shooting at you, when to dodge and when to disengage otherwise you can be punish very fast. The only time i really struggle is when there is a ennemi DD smart enough to not shoot at me but keep me spotted for his team, while i don't have support from radar ships or dds from my team.

I used to routinely sink BBs and CVs with my DDs. Now the speed and agility seem to have been nerfed while the secondaries on all other ships seem to have been buffed till they match the range of my guns and can't dodge like I used to be able to. Last year I could run in to 3-4Km , launch torps and escape. Now I can't seem to catch them when they are going away full speed. Or outrun them to escape. Not to mention it now takes 7 or more torps to sink an undamaged BB.

So an off topic question. in all your videos, the water "texture" is smooth. Almost like glass. I love the look of it. How do, I get mine to look that way? mine has small waves and the seas are "choppier". I realize it's in the settings, but every time, I play around with them, I get something completely different.

I started in mid-May, and 7 of these are on trees I want and am developing. Mostly its because they tend to be ships with "quirks" that are unique to the line. Things like the British CL vastly superior AP ricochet angles (Fiji), the ability of British torpedoes to be launched singly (Fiji/Daring), the Kleber's massive speed advantage, the unusual penetration/ROF of the Akizuki+ (Kitakaze) 100mm guns, the Yamato/Musashi unique ability to overmatch ANY ship's armor, Italian (Venezia) SAP and Exhaust smoke generators, American BB consistent gunnery (Montana, which means getting the North Carolina). Instead of the Kremlin, I'd rather have the Grosser Kurfurst with the German HE pen bonus on its secondaries. Also the British crazy high repairs at high tier on the Edinburgh+, so that's again collecting the Fiji along the way. On the maybe list is the Hindenburg leaning towards grinding for it, and Daring is kind of 50/50. Again, German HE penetration, and I recently got the Graf Spee as part of the Dockyard event, so I have a Tier 6 German Cruiser now. I'm not really sold on the Halland or other Pan-European DD, and as I said, Kremlin powercreeps the GK, but not in the matter of secondaries. Not on Flamu's list but on my list are French BB for the Republique (high 2.0 sigma for better accuracy, but also to develop a French BB captain for the Premium Tier 10 Bourgogne with its various boosters allowing for crazy stuff like 38+ knots in a BB and 12 sec or faster reload). I also waffle on British BB, there's quite a few Premium British BB I'd like to play in, but I'm not sold on playing through the tech line. He's not joking about the Kleber grind. Mid-Tier French DD was BRUTAL. I went 8 straight losses in the Tier-6 Guepard before I got my first win in it. I only have a 20% win rate in it. I have never lived through a battle in it, my damage rate is abysmal. My average damage for Tier 3 Fusilier is 10 times my average damage in Tier 6 Guepard. I think that I was only able to move on to the Tier 7 Vaquelin because I found the Guepard rather powerful in the Submarine battles (it actually has THE highest depth charge damage of any ship). Vaquelin is a little better, but it is only a bit above average speed, it's not until Tier 8+ that the French DD start hitting the top of the class+tier speeds. It's just brutal having no options in the Guepard. Average speed, no concealment, a reload booster. Every DD smokes up against you because they can hide and you can't and you can do nothing but back away from the smoke cloud shooting at you or die. Can't escape plane detection from the ever present carriers and death. Get sent into a LOT of uptiered battles and die because you can't do appreciable damage and can't hide. Actually I've since done in depth stat studies of all the ships in the game, and lots of Tier 5-7 ships have abnormally whack stats. For example, all the 1.5 sigma battleships are in this range. Lots of tech tree lines don't get what makes the high-tier ones unique and advantageous, but still suffer the disadvantages of their lines. Besides the French DD, the Italian CA Trento at T6 suffers similarly because its Engine smoke does not last nearly as long as it does at higher tiers, 25 sec vs 45 sec. But the ship is quite easy to punish from almost any angle. Another example is the massive British heals which that nation gets. For BB, it appears on the T7 Premium Nelson, but otherwise only appears on 3 of the T9-T10 BB. Otherwise they just get normal heals like everyone else.

Alright my question for you all is What type of skill tree build would you use to build for reload and not range like Flamu mentioned? Me personally that type of build would be a TREMENDOUS help with any crusier ship grind that had a fast reloading gun's.

What still absolutely boggles my mind is that when Conqueror was considered massively overpowered, not only did they nerf the Conq, but they also got the sledgehammer nerf all the way down the tech tree to tier 7 where Monarch and KGV/DoY really didn't deserve it AT ALL and no body cares... about either of them even though if Monarch or KGV/DoY get up tiered then they become target practice for the enemy team. Kremlin is way more overpowered than Conq ever was but it gets the nerf toffee hammer instead..... Some people say Russian bias is over stated somewhat in this game... I still disagree, Just look at what they did to the Henri IV as well... (Er... we haven't done any testing but we are nerfing the acceleration by 50% because of all the winey bitches on the Russian server said we should) Kleber got the sledgehammer concealment nerf, Alsace got the sledgehammer gun nerf. When is it going to stop? Oh I almost forgot.... Odin... I love how they justified the MASSIVE hit point nerf of it because it has lots of armour and torps etc etc..... Just laughable really considering it has less hit points than the Scharnhorst which is considered to be it's predecessor and before it never had a really brilliant health pool. 62k was about right even though it was a bit on the low side I still think it was about right. 52k though.... no... just no.... German fun denied! I really hope they don't "balans" the up coming Pommen

There are two Russian ships in the video - the Kremlin and the Tallinn. And yet, you still whine about "Russian bias"? What about "French bias" - the Kleber? Or the "British bias" - the Daring, the Fiji? Or ships such as the Musashi and Alaska, which are tier 9 and three quarters? The game has a much more global problem - the powercreep. The Soviet ships are not to blame for all of this.

This is just wrong, Conqueror and Conqueror alone was nerfed specifically, twice. Heal cooldown went up, concealment was nerfed. The citadel nerf to all the T7+ tech tree ships (which I assume is what you’re confusing this with) was done at the same time as a large heal buff. If you’re not constantly getting sniped in the citadel the changes were a good thing. And yes, Russian bias is overstated. If you don’t live in the bubble of Flamu’s comment section where he actively cultivates this kind of attitude, it’s pretty obvious.

Also a lot of buffs are needed to balance out the game. FDG, Colorado, Monarch, KGV, Kaba and even Golieth(compared to what bullshit the Ruskis are getting and the fact that it's a floating citadel) I'm sure there still more that's missing out but those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. Plus a lot of premiums also need looking at.
