Number 10, letting the fluid evaporate, is hardly an issue for me. I know how to craft my own wicks by pulling strands from cotton oil lamp wicks, weaving said cotton strands together into a smaller wick, and then sealing the tip by tying it together with thin copper wire, so it doesn't become undone. Been doing this since 2006 with great success, these self-made wicks have been very robust and reliable for me, even resisting charring pretty well. And, more importantly, I have access to near infinite supply, making the wick charring a non-issue to me. This is the absolute strength of the classic oil Zippo, compared to other lighters: Its high degree of end user maintainability. These suckers really are built to last from father to son. Few other companies appreciate quality like this anymore. You buy a BIC, you use it until it goes dry and then you bin it. With Zippo, you just keep it going with spare parts, and it's gonna be with you decades later. While I appreciate the new butane inserts they recently introduced, there will regardless always be a place for the traditional oil insert as well, for its simple, rugged reliability.
@Zippofanatic77outdoors2 жыл бұрын

@Rohit_Gawande_Patil3 ай бұрын
How to make wicks at home? Please make a video if u can
@ShockproofJamo3 ай бұрын
@@Rohit_Gawande_Patil Making them is quite simple, really. Go out there, and buy one of those flat cotton oil lamp wicks with a red streak running in the middle. These are super cheap, something like 2 bucks a piece. Then, using scissors, you'll wanna cut yourself a piece of the wick that is about 11-12 centimeters long. That's about 4,5 inches for the Americans. You will also wanna have some copper wire, and cutters to cut the wire with. The copper wire from worn out, burned out old Zippo wicks will work fine, of course, but any copper wire will do. When you have your 11-12 centimeters (4,5 inches) of cotton oil lamp wick, you start pulling threads from it. You'll want to have about 11 threads for this, so you'll begin to unravel the original oil lamp wick to pull about 11 threads from it. When you have your 11 threads, you will want to group them into a cluster/bunch/bundle that runs completely straight lengthwise, all right? So you have 11 cotton threads, pulled from the oil lamp wick that are in a bundle of 11, and you grab this bundle from both ends with your fingers, and keep it pulled straight and taut. While your bundle of 11 threads is pulled taut between the fingers of your both hands, you will then begin to twist the threads into a helical/corkscrew/spiral shape, by twisting the left hand end of the bundle to a clockwise direction, while at the same time your right hand counters this by twisting the right hand end of the bundle of threads to a counter-clockwise direction. When you twist your threads into a spiral shape like this, what you wanna do is you'll want to create maximum tension, so twist the threads into a spiral shape, as far as you can possibly make them go. When they are at maximum tension, bend the threads bundle into a hairpin shape from the middle/halfway point of the bundle. DO NOT let go of the ends on either side, or the whole thing becomes unraveled. So, by bending from the middle, you'll want your bundle to double up, like a jackknife. Because you have earlier twisted the threads into a high-tension spiral/helix shape, you'll notice how the bundle twists around itself from all the tension the tight spiral/corkscrew shape creates. This is the expected and desired result. You will now have in your hands an estimated 6,5-7 centimeters (2,5-2,7 inches) small, helix shaped cotton wick that looks like a girl's braided ponytail. Now you must seal the other, frayed end of your newly created wick with the copper wire mentioned earlier. So, using your finest knowledge of knots, tie/wrap your copper wire around the frayed end of the wick so that the frayed end doesn't become undone. I'll leave you to decide the best method for this one. Lastly, you'll want to put the new wick into your Zippo's insert. You'll notice that as the wick wrapped around itself, the other end was left with a convenient loop. Place thin steel wire into this loop, and bend it/double it up to create a hairpin hook. With this hook, you'll then pull your new wick trough the Zippo insert's wick hole to install it. Your Zippo now has your very own, custom made wick installed. Trim the frayed end with scissors to your liking. I hereby donate my knowledge of this trick to the Internet's vast library of public domain information, so that anyone may use this information at their pleasure, free of charge and royalties. For the benefit of the Zippo lighter community.

I’d have to fill it up every single day with fluid. I quit carrying it around after a few months and forgot about it. Now fast forward to today. I was looking up what fluid I should use in this windproof March I used cause I assumed my fluid must have gone bad or something and I learn the repacking and i realize the reason the lighter I loved and lost worked so well is when I first got it my little cousin was messing with it and accidentally yanked the wick out so I had to take it all apart and repack it. If you want to keep your Zippo running like new get two things. A small hobby wire brush (crown type) and cotton swabs used for gun cleaning. Use the brush to clean the crud from the spark wheel and use the swab to clean the wick. It'll light like new every time. And I had that exact thing happen to me last year. Sent my 1982 classic brass Zippo in to be refurbed, and they fixed it up perfectly. The day I got it back a “friend” asked to see it, did that stupid pop on the lid, and launched it into the edge of a table, putting a huge dent in the lid. 41 years I had that with hardly a scratch, and then it ran into an idiot. Another "don't" would be to not be annoying with the Zippo. E.g. flicking the lid over and over in an otherwise quiet room full of people. If you really need to fidget around with it, you can still spin it between your fingers or something, just do it quietly. Otherwise you're just a slightly fancier version of the guy who keeps clicking the ballpoint pen. Nobody likes that. And I'm not saying don't do it at all. It's fun to play with and I do it all the time, but read the room a little.

For me it’s not about how the lighter is hardy or fancy but rather just that I like the experience/mentality with stuff like this. Sure I could have just gotten a bic or clipper and some butane but the zippo requires patience and to slow down. I smoke and have other hobbies that require me to be meticulously prepared and methodical so I’m used to a routine of maintaining/cleaning miscellaneous apparatus alike. Same thing with Japanese tea enthusiasts and coffee drinkers, they have a whole process plus equipment just to drink a beverage. Entirely unnecessary but an experience when done properly.
@Zippofanatic77outdoors2 ай бұрын
Yeah to be honest I’ve just been using butane inserts for the last year. Basically maintenance free. Other than filling it once a week.

I make my own lighters and I'm testing a couple for evaporation. They still light up after ten months from their first fuel fill. It's all about sealing which zippos do not do since their lids are not air tight.
