Lots of good points here. I lived in Maui for 12 years and loved it all! Most of the “drawbacks” you spoke of were what I loved most. I recently visited and there was a great little late night spot called Esters that stayed open until at least midnight. We went to a great comedy show at MAPA right above the cocktail bar and then stayed for a drink. I think there’s nightlife just on a smaller scale, it’s no New York but clean air, friendly people, and beauty everywhere would be my preference. I hope to be able to come back and retire there one day. Thanks for all the great memories.

Wow, thank you for sharing your personal experience. It's heartwarming to hear that what some may consider drawbacks were actually the things you loved the most. The late-night spot, Esters, is incredible and we are so lucky to have it you are absolutely right. You obviously have great taste! I sincerely hope that your dream of retiring here becomes a reality one day. Thank you for sharing your memories and for your kind words. They've added an extra touch of positivity to my day.

All of those concerns are real but it's still a great place to live. Another tip is to quickly find "your people" - those who may be of similar age and have similar interests. Not quite a small town, the pool of such people is much smaller than in any metro area. A silver lining is that those people may have fewer distractions. It's also a great place to try new artistic or creative pursuits - the surrounding beauty is certainly an inspiration.

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. I really appreciate your perspective. Finding "your people" resonates with me, and I agree the smaller pool of individuals can lead to stronger connections and a better sense of community. The surrounding beauty is definitely an inspiration for artistic pursuits! Thank you for your kind words and for taking the time to watch and engage with my video!

This is a great video. I have found living in Southern California, the cost of living in Maui is close to the cost of living in SoCal.

These are some great points to consider before choosing to live on Maui. And you are so right that they could be downfalls for some or exactly what a person is looking for. Thank you for the local insight🤓

One persons Pros and another persons Cons it seems like. Glad we all have different interests because if not the world would be pretty boring!

For empty nesters with no kids, no dogs, not interested in night life it sounds like the only drawback is the health care issue.

Great insights! Thanks for candid, honest information. I wonderful service to help people discover and discern the perfect place for their lifestyle. I’m glad to be connected with others, who purposely live somewhere that has such excellent local produce, and a more nature, oriented pace and lifestyle. I in thank you India for sharing your beautiful aloha Vibe 🌿🏝️🤙

This is very disheartening. I’m from the mainland currently trying to negotiate a contract with a local hospital in Maui. I’m an experienced medical professional that has a lot to offer. I hope I can work something out contractually because I would love to bring the help that is so desperately needed

Maui has the unique situation of having a TON of money per capita on the island at any one time, like a staggeringly high sum, but almost all of it being from tourists or part timers using loopholes to avoid paying taxes. That results in an eco system where everything is expensive but basic services & wages are very low.

The best thing Maui could do is find ways to close the loopholes that allow rich part time residents to avoid paying their dues. It also needs to ramp up taxes on big resorts.

Very comprehensive and so many interesting tidbits the travel books won't mention. I like how you also mentioned the counter points as well - what one person would not like, another person is seeking! Traveling to Asia/Australia/New Zealand might be actually easier from here : ) or so I thought and I am sticking to that, lol!

You’re so right! There’s a direct flight from Oahu to New Zealand. 9 hours, how crazy is that?!

I live here on Maui and is the most racist place I’ve ever been. Also, the average local people are quick to hate the United States government and mainlanders, but quick to ask for handouts from the rich and the US government. The cost of living is astronomical, if your not rich, just visit. Also, there is no upscale culture such as plays, music or any type of fashion. Upside, it absolutely beautiful year round and the ocean makes it all worth wile. Many people are kind and caring, but there is a real separation in social status. Also, if you bring a care here, it’s going to get obliterated with door dings from the truest and residents alike.
