I knew a girl who was on the show. She was nice until we got to 8th grade, then she and her friends became truly awful people. Teenage hormones I guess? My thought on this is that the producers didn't actually have to do much to get her to act like a brat, she was one at the time.

It's a big deal in the us because it's when you can drive, bear in mind you don't really get another coming of age because you can't drink til 21 by which time you're probably either a student or working so don't have the time for a big thing. In the uk we celebrate 18 because that's when you can do most things (including drink) and it's the end of compulsory education so double celebration.

In the Netherlands (back when I became 16) it was the legal drinking age and the age you can get into bars and clubs. So yea, it's a bit of a bigger party then becoming 15 or 17. My parents don't ever drink, but that birthday they got me beer and wine and it felt like a really big deal! And I think I'm not a spoiled kid. My parents usually gave me a 10 euro gift. Btw, the legal age is now 18 here and I think that makes more sense.
