It really depends. The main reason I disliked "Temple of Doom" was indeed the character of Willie. @@jesseowenvillamor6348 Note that I said "character of Willie", not Ms. Capshaw. The other Indiana Jones movies had women, just none spent the majority of the movie screaming. After the first Indiana Jones movie had a strong, competent female character, Willie seemed to be step backward (I believe that Gene Siskel used the term "Screaming Floosie") and her shrill screaming quite literally hurt my ears in the theater. It was that performance that quite literally made the movie an unpleasant experience for me. It was so annoying that I have never bothered to watch the DVD of Temple of Doom that I was given a couple.of decades ago in a boxed set ot the first three movies.

One has to make a distinction between a bad movie with bad acting (i.e., Battlefield Earth and John Travolta) versus an okay movie with bad acting (The Godfather Part 3 and Sofia Coppola). These should be separate lists. For example, nothing was going to save Battlefield Earth, Travolta only made that bad movie even worse versus another actor in Sofia's place who would've elevated an already acceptable movie (The Godfather 3).

@@user-mg5mv2tn8q Then I say one should blame the writers for creating the character; not her for portraying it She just did what she was hired to do; *especially* the screaming part. Many folks may not like her character, and might have been happier with it without her, but she didn't *destroy* the movie. Certainly not like others on this list destroyed theirs. Don't get me wrong; I think the movie *would* have been better *without* her character altogether; or at least if they had scripted the movie with a woman that was more than just a female Doctor Zachary Smith (the Jonathan Harris version). But we got what they scripted and whether one loves or hates her performance is imo just a matter of personal taste. Appears to me she just did what she was basically told to do, and she was good at what she was specifically hired for - screaming and being a nuisance. That was the intent all along. Most of the other actors on this list (or others they skipped such as Jesse Eisenberg in BvS or Matthew Broderick in 1998's Godzilla) however were simply badly miscast altogether.

Winona Ryder was initially cast as Mary Corleone, but had to bow out. I'm certain Francis Ford Coppola could have found another great young actress to play the role of Mary, but he chose his own daughter instead. That was poor judgement. Mary and her fate in the film are pivotal for the audience to be pulled into the film and really care about what happens. Sofia has proven herself to be a highly-skilled director, but she was never a good actress. Her father doomed the film as soon as he decided to cast her in the role. As for Keanu in Dracula. He didn't ruin that movie, not by a long shot. It was a terrible casting decision (even though I'm a big Keanu fan), but she show was still very good.

Part of the reason that "Raiders" worked so well was that the lead female character was strong. The original movie was an improvement on the serials that inspired it, "Temple" was not and seemed like a downgrade in comparison. A screaming floozy (the term used by both Siskel and Ebert) and gross-out gags like eyeball soup, ripping beating hearts out, etc. The increased graphic violence of this movie was a large reason the "PG-13" rating was created. Capshaw's screaming was literally painful when I was in the theater. I have avoided watching the film since it came out in 1984 largely because Capshaw's character was so bad, even though I was given a copy (in a boxed-set) a couple of decades ago. This video prompted me to re-read a couple of reviews which reminded me of the excellent stunt work and chase scenes, so I will probably dust off the DVD and watch it. At least now I can press the mute button during the screaming.

I agree. I can't blame Sofia Coppola for that terrible miscast, she was just a kid and said yes to a very amazing opportunity. The blame lies squarely on the shoulders of her father. Even though he only had 3 weeks, he could have found a decent replacement. There are so many young actresses out there. It would have a been a scramble, but they didn't need someone famous, they just needed someone who could really act.
