Wasn't Rebecca overweight and the guy that she was with constantly told her, in many ways, that she was lucky to have a guy give her any attention at all so she could take what he was giving her or be alone? I'm getting emotional just thinking about it. I had forgotten about the episode with Blanche being abused. The Golden Girls taught me so much. I still watch them every night.

The Homeless shelter episode is sooooo ahead of its time. Not just for discussing the costs of living that the elderly have to endure, but the young man that Blanche befriends is homeless and an alcoholic....despite having graduated with his Ph.D. It is a wonderful reminder that having an extremely high amount of success ...doesn’t make you immune from life’s pitfalls. And the HIV episode was soooooo ahead of its time
@nujeru995 жыл бұрын
Jonathan Parks please point to the tv shows in the 80s that were dealing with the topics of the costs of aging, the spectrum of homelessness (the fact that you could have a Ph.D and be a homeless alcoholic), and HIV-particularly handling the topic of HIV by not blaming it as “God’s punishment” for being gay or a drug user. Oh yeah that’s right, those issues weren’t close to being approached on tv back then....especially with the poignance and depth that Golden Girls did. So yes, these episodes were ahead of their time

@@nujeru99 haha, I find it ...well its not funny but that phrase has become so common when we are angry to say, I find it extremely annoying that someone such as yourself can tell me what I did and didn't watch in the 1980s, fellas I bet you didn't know half the shows that aired in the 1980s, just what you find on the internet that tells you "all the wonders of everything". oh you fools, you've been scammed and tricked by a cunning magician to make the real history of the past be covered from your eyes, and people are still working on making it finally disappear. it is disgusting how you see the past, I remember countless shows in the 1960s addressing these issues...oh? did you think the Leave it to Beaver and Love Lucy were the only choices of shows to watch. good grief! you know nothing but think you know everything. I used to watch Peter Gun and the Road runners in the 1950s all the time. Tom and Jerry in the 1940s, Disney excursions all dazzled in that magical Television ported world. the kind soft opening of the television, and the easy nob turning and tuning to get your exact preference. and nice costs to, all these baby boomers talking up a tree about never having Televisions making it sound like they were $4000 or something. we purchased our sets, I helped my uncle buy one, and I went once with my Brother to purchase one and the prices were simply great! only just around 300 dollars. you've been lied to son I'm sorry to say, next week we'll learn about the large majority of people that were not racist much to that shigrin.

I am also sickened by the treatment of our elderly. Why can't we care for our elderly the way they do in Asia? Elders in Asia are treated with high levels of respect from younger generations. If you ride the subway or a bus in a city such as Seoul, South Korea or Tokyo, Japan and you'll see that younger people give up their seats for elders. I always address older people I cross paths with as either "Sir" or "Ma'am."

You missed season 3 episode 1: "Old Friends". This is the one where Sophia befriended an elderly man on the bench on the boardwalk by the beach and he turned out to have Alzheimer's. The show dealt with the subject very sensitively and realistically, as they did in other episodes where they dealt with the reality of dementia. Before Golden Girls I can't remember any popular series, especially not sitcoms, that dealt with it in such a way. Most often there would be an older character who was "colorful" or "eccentric" for comic relief, but never realistically addressed as having dementia, which is a horrible condition that affects millions (both victims and families). Golden Girls addressed it so well, with maturity and respect.
@bricksandkeebs6 ай бұрын
I cried buckets over that episode. “You can cry all you want” and then Sophia offered her shoulder for her friend to cry on. It hit home since my beloved grandaunt had dementia, plus I did know years after the show that Estelle Getty is actually in the early stages of premature dementia. She was already forgetting her lines that the staff had to post her lines on inconspicuous places so she can remember.

I've seen all the episodes over seven times. They are simply timeless. The Episode "Not another monday" always puts me to tears.

Dorothy's Anti-Semitic Friend- There was an episode of The Mary Tyler Moore Show about this, too, with Mary Frann as Mary's anti-semitic friend. I think it was called, Some of My Best Friends are Rhoda.

On the suicide one i feel that you missed the part where her friend says "I don't know what to do" and Sophia tells her that she can't change her mind tomorrow and i thought that was probably the most important line from that whole scene

-When Dorothys son introduced his new fiance who was a black woman and much older than him -When Sofia found out her new friend suffered from Alzheimers -When Blanches daughter struggled to leave her abusive fiance -When Dorothys lesbian friend visits and develops a crush on Rose -When Rose was traumatized after their home was broken into -When Sofia learns her son is a Crossdresser

Yes, the onr about Blanche's daughter Rebecca was sad for me. She was, in the words of all doctors in this day and age, mortally obese and she was "clinging" to a man who would spew out....basically fat shaming her 😢 I don't want to endure that from a low life

Unpopular opinion, but man is this show golden. It is a treasure, especially of it's time. And I say unpopular opinion because almost everybody I've met have hated this show. I think it's time we bring reruns back

I love this show. I'm 31 years old and I love this show. This show dealt with topics that were a little too touchy or taboo for that time (late 80's, early 90's). They did a great job doing that!

@2:42 The women were not "retirees" from the run of the show they were in the late 50's to early 60's and still working. Dorothy, Blanche and Rose all had jobs and were not retired
