Every since I found out what Harvey Weinstein was able to do behind the scenes (pre-metoo-sex-stuff) to get Miramax films the big prize, I knew that lobbying, schmoozing, and advertising are very important to the Oscars. A great movie released in February is not going to do as well in the awards shows as a great movie released in December will because the Dec movie will be so much fresher. That's where the lobbying machine comes into play, along with many other other circumstances that benefit from advertising.

The Boss Baby being nominated for best animated movie, while Your Name and A Silent Voice were not. Like, what the fuck?!
@ianwestc
@ianwestc 3 жыл бұрын
Your Name was a really sad story (the movie award development, that is). Why did it not receive a Best Animated nod? Because the studio absolutely bungled the release. It received a North American release in mid-2017, but the studio gave it one-week release at the end of 2016 in two theaters in New York and Los Angeles just so it would qualify for year 2016's Oscars. What was wrong with that? Almost no critics got the chance to see the movie to even forward it for a nomination. And what movies did get nominated? Zootopia, Kubo and the Two Strings, Moana, My Life as a Zucchini, and The Red Turtle. Yikes. 2016 is the possibly the strongest year ever for the Best Animated Feature category. EVER. The next year, 2017, we got Coco, The Boss Baby, The Breadwinner, Ferdinand, and Loving Vincent. Some decent movies, but also a few weaker entries. Why did Boss Baby get the nod over Your Name? Because Your Name was not eligible. It had its chance the previous year, but no one saw it until five months after the awards show for which it was eligible.

The most egregious snub by the Academy, in my opinion, is Bruno Ganz not getting a Best Actor Nomination for Downfall as Adolf Hitler. Not only is it absolutely amazing, but I deem it to be quite courageous to present one of the most evil men in history in a very human performance instead of a caricature. Whenever he is on, it's nearly impossible to take my eyes off of him he was so good.

I couldn’t agree more about Boogie Nights. They were probably snubbed because of the plot line of the story. The academy probably thought that they didn’t want to hand out awards for a film based on the porn industry. I really thought that Goodfellas would have won an award. I still watch that movie to this day. The storyline and actors were amazing in this film.

Mine is a little obvious: Best Supporting Actress for Melinda Dillon as Ralphie's Mother in "A Christmas Story". Melinda's performance was a lot like her character. She helped ground these crazy people in these crazy situations, and she did it with such grace and nuance, while still finding time to sneak in subtle humor. When the movie airs on its regular Christmas marathon, do yourself a favor and view it at least once while focusing solely on Ms. Dillon's performance. A great role for a great actress that was sadly overlooked.

This is why the fans/audience are so important. Because even if they snub them they know they won by some means because other people think their movie was great. To paraphrase Drake "If you got people singing the words to your songs and coming to see your performances in the cold hours of the night and spending what money they have just to hear your songs you've won already you don't need this award right here" the same applies to movies. If you got people quoting it and it affects pop culture in more ways than you'd think and maybe they see it as a classic and many other factors then you've basically won in the eyes of the people.

But I don't see where the competition was better than The King's Speech. It had lots of interesting relationships, important history, snappy pace and an incredible ending. The Social Network was really good but kind of tailed off at the end. Plus, it's hard to top Firth, Pearce, Spall and Geoffrey Rush in the acting department. Eisenberg was great but Andrew Garfield overacts and Justin Timberlake was Justin Timberlake more than he was Sean Parker. Rotten Tomatoes has a higher audience score, too.

@@jeffreym.8957 Darryl Zanuck wanted to make a film about D-Day that was as accurate as possible. There were even advisors on the film who'd actually been there. It had been less than 20 years since the event. There were still a few things it didn't get exactly right, like failing to fully acknowledge the Canadian troops involved but, all in all, a tremendous undertaking. It also follows the experiences of British, French & German forces, so it captures things from both sides & shows the soldiers & officers (including the Germans) simply as real people. They also speak the actual appropriate languages, with English subtitles provided. Unfortunately, at that time, scenes of blood & gore were frowned upon, so we don't quite see the battle in all of its brutality. We do get a look at it from some very impressive wide angles & bird's eye view shots, plus it's in b/w, so that gives it the feel of newsreel footage. The cast is filled with stars, too, from John Wayne to Richard Burton, from Fabian to Roddy McDowall, Henry Fonda, Eddie Albert, etc.
