I think I need to clarify that "upset" doesn't mean bad. It just means subverting expectations. Many of these picks are good upsets.

if only we don't base the winner off the precursor awards, non-related narrative (body of work), and blinding sentimentality, we know who will win. there are almost 10 thousand academy voters that are diverse, most of the time it's about the taste but simply, most of them are basing their choices off the best performance for that year without bias. because all of us don't want to lose due credit because someone else is more impartially preferred. OLIVIA COLEMAN and MOONLIGHT did not cause upsets for those who are not influenced with pseudo analysis.

Meanwhile I’m over here still shocked and clueless as to how the hell Bohemian Rhapsody won Best Editing... let alone getting nominated. When it came out the same year as Searching... where the film is entirely editing & it would not have worked at all without it. And that film didnt even get nominated.

I agree. She had the best performance of the year. Literally all of the sentiment for Glenn Close was she was overdue and she would have a record number of loses. It had very little to do with her performance in a movie that wasn’t getting any more nominations. Also Olivia also won the globe so as far as precursors she wasn’t far behind. People might discount her Bafta win because she is British but it right before the Oscars and a solid second. Indeed when she had won I wondered if it swung the momentum enough. Clearly it did. People might have been surprised but they were happy she won. She was amazing.

Yeah sure switie... If good narrative, then the credit deserves to be meted out to the scribe... If good narrative is propellant for accolade, then certain performances shouldn't have neccessarilly won... she snubbed in every "big awards" not just the oscar, but she's winning in some film festival. it's quite predictable because those big awards always see genre film as another thing. the biggest snub last year was Ethan Hawke which should be the one to win.

@Diego Pisfil Dude, I aLso must disagree with u and @theoscarexpert and say that #Birdman was a deserved win Aside the thought about the Production Duration, I couldn't say anything more that hasn't already been effecientLy done yet... NonetheLess, taking a Look at Birdman, it was totaL overthetop creativity at display from frame to frame... And I say here today, that #BIRDMAN will be more memorable as a #cLassic - watchout for it'd even be references for Lecturers at FilmSchools - and source materiaLs for young FilmMalkers... #blockings_Framing_flow_rythm_characterization_sets_realism etc... You can't call some movie winning an upset if it's thought to be one of the two films most likely to win. Green book wasn't an upset because it was clearly that or Roma. You can't call Moonlight an upset because it was always going to be that or La La Land. If something like Blackkklansman had won over Green Book that would've been an upset or similarly if something like Lion had won over Moonlight.

I was expecting Olivia Colman to win, the UK media had been predicting it all week in the build up to the Oscars. So it wasn't a surprise to us. And, she deserved it too. Also, Spotlight deserved Best Picture, brilliant film. Finally, Mark Rylance absolutely deserved his award. He was amazing.

Sometimes (like some of those upsets!)Oscar is just plain WRONG! Looking at the history of these awards it’s actually STUNNING how many iconic and memorable performances and films lost to average and forgettable ones. You just say to yourself “Really?! What the heck were they thinking?!”
@Wired4Life2
@Wired4Life2 4 жыл бұрын
Stallone and Close's losses aren't that surprising when you consider that they were the sole Oscar noms for their respective films, losing to performances in films that had at least a handful of Oscar noms heading into the night. In other words, the Academy felt some pressure to give something to the more recognized films across the board.

Hmmm... I don't think so... If you deserved it, you deserved it. JAMIE FOXX in #Ray, FOREST WHITAKER in #TLKoS, DENZEL WASHINGTON in #Glory JULIANNE MORRE in #StillAlice... Their films didn't particuLarLy do well with noms in other categories, yet stiLL went home with the statuette... So I don't really think that was really the case here😏
@Wired4Life2

@@faibabernard Foxx was in a Picture/Director nom. Washington was in a film that barely missed out on Picture/Director noms. Whitaker and Moore may have been the sole noms for their films, but they swept all the major acting precursors.

Ex Machina is way ahead of Mad Max and Star Wars in terms of VFX that year. Most people watched Star Wars and Mad Max because these movies are widely released with big budgets and obviously watched by more people than Ex Machina. And the people who disagree with Ex Machine are the ones who are not familiar with the technics of VFX shots. Most critics at Gold Derby are not the ones with the right knowledge about visual effects. Critics can be wrong. People must watch all the nominees before having an opinion. I am glad Ex Machina won the Oscars. It was one of the best VFX films of that DECADE.

Sometime in the near future Glenn Close should be given an honorary Oscar for her collective work. Glenn Close has a Beautiful Singing Voice. In her next film, if she sings with great feeling while playing a very emotional character, she will win the Oscar. I hope that happens. She should use all of her talents.

I sincerely hope people would stop comparing Glenn Close to Julianne Moore. Moore's performance got raved ever since it premiered at TIFF and she won all the industry/televised awards under the sun that year. Globe, SAG, BFCA, BAFTA, Indie Spirit plus tons of critics awards that Close didn't manage to win. Nobody has a real shot in Moore's year and for those who are not aware The Academy HATED Gone Girl (rightfully so imho). Only similarities is that they were both overdue at that point and being the sole nominee of their respective films and that's it. The Academy loved Moore's performance and it shows. Obviously the same can't be said about Close.

John Bonham Yes it is, La La Land is the Singing in the rain of our time, and Moonlight, despite Naomi Harris and Mahershalla Ali great performances, is a very forgettable movie.
@mateogalvezarrascue6401
@mateogalvezarrascue6401 4 жыл бұрын
Jay Cee For me it isn’t. I think La La Land is a movie that will live for many years. And putting it in the same place as Singing in the Rain may sound ridiculous now, but not in the next 10 years. On the other hand hand, Moonlight is just another overrated film from the Left Hollywood. It was choose with the intention to give black people more representation in the Oscars, I get it, but it wasn’t the best that year. Hacksaw Ridge, Hell or High Water and Arrival were MUCH BETTER movies than Moonlight. Although, I understand Moonlight may be a meaningful for black and gay people ... at least it was better than Black Panther ...
@mateogalvezarrascue6401
@mateogalvezarrascue6401 4 жыл бұрын
Jay Cee I never said it cannot be meaningful for a non black or gay person, it can. However, when movies are being rated based on how many black or Chinese people are represented ... that’s when movies start to lose meaning, at least for me. Is very known that in the last years Hollywood overrates movies that point out this social issues. I am a guy who likes good stories, simple as that. For example I loved Get Out. But for me Moonlight was just boring, lame and trying too hard, although with good performances. Maybe it was not targeted to me, who knows. Also I understand you didn’t like La La Land ... subjectivity. But it’s one of the best musicals of the century. It’s hard to say if La La Land it’s at the same level of masterpieces like Singing in the Rain, only years will tell us if it survives the pass of time. What I tried to say in the earlier comment was that La La Land is probably the best musical of our era, just like Singing in the Rain was for the Golden Era of Hollywood in the 50’s. If you deny that, you are denying facts man ...
