Another good twist villain is Tighten from Megamind. The movie makes a really unique move by making a loser of a side-character into the main villain by giving him superpowers and then just having him make the descent into crime that would naturally come from empowering a creepy incel.

WarriorofLight I think Tighten counts. A plot twist is usually something that changes the direction the story is going. And the biggest loser in Metro City becoming the worst superhero they've ever seen definitely changes the story's direction. But, I will say that Metroman's secretly being alive is a much better plot twist.

Also, The Incredibles (2004). In that film, the hero lets his fan down for their own safety, and said fan becomes a super-villain whose actions (luring a bunch of superheroes to their deaths with the Omnidroid, successfully shooting down a plane in hopes of killing Mr. Incredible's family, and use the aforementioned Omnidroid to attack random citizens so he can swoop in and "save the day") are completely disproportionate to his motivation.

I deeply appreciate the commentary on Hans. Seriously, even without that book they made to further detail his motives, he's a very subtle kind of villain. Heck, he all but sings his motivations in Love is an Open Door. Being the youngest of his very long line of brothers, his inheritance would be next to nothing, so such a needy princess like Anna offered a chance at everything he could ever want. He'd just have to play the nice guy like he had been while brooding in the shadows. There are other villains I like better, but I think the hate he gets is mostly from the oversaturation Frozen got when it first came out.

No, people hate Hans for numerous reasons, one of which is that he's, to put this bluntly, a shitty twist villain. For one the twist happens so late in the film that any development of his character and motivations is nonexistent. Secondly the more you think about it, he's a complete dumbass. He went through the effort to fake his relationship with Anna to get the throne of Arendelle, only to *reveal his whole scheme to her face* and then proceeds to leave her alone *BEFORE* she died. If anyone came across her like a maid or if she managed to write a note detailing what he did, his plans would have fallen apart. Give Ernesto some credit here, he made sure that Hector died before stealing his songs and done so in a way where Hector wouldn't have known that he was responsible. What Hans did was completely unnecessary and outright counterintuitive to his goals. He could've easily continued feigning innocence, if his kissing Anna didn't work, he could've easily rationalized it that even if they loved each other, that they simply didn't know each other long enough for it to truly count as true love. If he did this then he could've gotten Anna to publicly declare him king of Arendelle before she dies, since him just telling others that she did with no proof wouldn't fly and further investigation would've gotten him caught. This way once Anna died, he could easily claim that Elsa murdered her and gotten her executed, thus fulfilling his goals in a way he could get away with. Honestly, I think Ernesto deserves to be placed higher than Hans since his actual character was more developed, he feigned innocence for as long as possible, which shows more cunning and he was an effective villain who didn't clutch onto the idiot ball like a moron. He was frankly the twist villain that Hans should have been.

My only problem with Hans is the Rowboat scene when he fell in water and came out with a nice smile when he wax alone I know it was to trick the audiance but it would been better if we saw from another angel or if they changed the scene after he fell in the water,he was not bad asa villian but it was stupid of him to ignore the kiss and just go for kill the sisters by letting one die slowly and the other to kill with his sword. For me it would been better if they did the kiss and nothing happen and Anna realise that Hans does not truly loves her but he does not know it himself because his true love is to rule the county, so with a failed kiss he tells Anna it looks like the only way to get the summer back is to kill Elsa beacuse that is what think would work, sure Anna would tried to stop him but because she was weak she would fail and before Hans lock Anna in the room he would told he is sorry and he does love her. Rest of the movie goes how it did, but the Anna punching Hans would be more satisfied instead. But this is just my reason.

In said book, it details Hans' brutal childhood where he suffered abuse from his 12 older brothers except for one due to being the youngest and his father who despises weakness, sees his eldest sons bullying Hans as a sign of their strength, to the point of refusing to acknowledge Hans' presence during family gatherings. The cruel treatment and the king's favoritism towards his brothers were the main factors for Hans' sociopathic behavior in the film
@appatary8523

In my opinion, Ernesto's case is a bit special. I think he barely does anything else as a villain because, at the point we met him, he literally has no reason to do bad. He isn't interested in, idk, poisoning the water of the living or taking over the town, he just wanted fame and glory and, unlike, let's say Hans, he already had it. He just wanted to keep his reputation intact, it seems fair to me he doesn't do much after the twist is revealed, just the needed to keep what he wanted to keep. He is the villain of his story, but he's not a very bad and maleficent villain with a mustache who wants to do bad just for the sake of it, he just has the mustache but not the intentions

Exactly. What makes Ernesto stand out compared to other twist villains is that, in a way, he has succeeded in his goal. He has already poisoned Héctor and became famous for his partner’s music, so he doesn’t really have to do much other than silence those who know the truth. I also love the irony in his defeat. He’s still famous, but not in a way that shows adoration. He still has what he wished for, but since he treated Héctor, Miguel, and their family with hostility, the people now do the same.

Oh, sure... if you ignore the fact he tried to kill a child (a child he'd believed was his own grandson mere hours beforehand, I might add,) to retain his fame post-mortem, and did everything he could to ensure a man he murdered was silenced, discredited and forgotten (even in the afterlife.) A murder/cover up which, btw, resulted in the victim's beloved wife - and generations of his family after - shunning him and everything he stood for, until La Cruiz's actions were exposed to the public years later. TL:DR - He took everything from a man he was suppose to be good friends with - including Hector's life, love, family and even nearly succeeded in ending the very memory of his existence. All for his own petty self-interest, and desire for fame no less. That's pretty bad, if you ask me.

There is also the fact he literally saved Elsa's life..why? If he was planning on killing her anyway? Did he expect getting her remove the winter would win over the people? why not just let her die then he was the one that went on the expedition so he would have gotten the honour anyway.. So many things that just don't make sense.

Turbo isn't really part of the "twist villain formula", that would imply that the movie has no villain for most of its runtime and then just has someone be the bad guy at random with little to no foreshadowing. The twist, as mentioned, isn't that King Candy is the villain, but it's also not _just_ that he's Turbo. It's that a character who seems like he might be redeemable or have good intentions - a quirky little Mad Hatter type of guy - is actually diabolical in the extreme, and petty enough that he did this just because two players turned away from his game for a few minutes once. In an earlier draft of the movie KC and Turbo _were_ separate characters with KC getting redeemed, so the idea was definitely intentional (this comes from an interview with the creators on the Blu-ray IIRC, and it's a shame that people pay so much attention to trailers/marketing/cameos but don't bother to watch stuff that comes directly from the crew). The audience is encouraged to give King Candy the benefit of the doubt even with the suspicions mounting - maybe he just doesn't want Vanellope to get hurt? - but then we learn that he's so unhinged that he's a danger to everyone and cares about no one but himself. He apparently didn't even care about making the other 2 Turbo Time racers homeless (or indirectly killing them) back during the RoadBlasters incident either.

I'm so glad King Candy/Turbo is so high in most Villain twist lists, his reveal from the foreshadowing to the build up is absolutely incredible. The writing in Wreck-It Ralph is so good that even if you THINK you know who the villain is, it does a great job of making you DOUBT. When KC tells Ralph the reason for 'doing what he's doing' (e.i. not letting vanollepe race and thus going through 'evil actions' to do so), it convinces not only Ralph but the audience because everything he says is TRUE. The game COULD get unplugged and Vanollepe COULD die. And yet on top of that, his reveal as Turbo was brilliant as almost no one saw coming, Ralph and Felix's reactions mirror the audience, everything begins to make sense, and not only does KC/Turbo have to die THREE TIMES (game unplugged, Cybug, Cola Mountain) to finally be defeated, his Cybug design and battle scene is GENUIELY terrifying. The animation and voice work from Alan Tudyk is perfectly utilized to make KC/Turbo such a great and dangerous villain.

I don’t really consider Syndrome a twist villain only because him being a villain isn’t really meant as a twist. Instead, it’s due to the fact that Incrediboy/Buddy *became* a villain as a result of Mr. Incredible’s actions. The twist doesn’t really hinge on him being a villain, but the fact that even a superhero’s idol can end up becoming their greatest nemesis.

He’s one of my favorite Disney characters/villains but everything surrounding how the plot twist is written and his characterization following that is so corny and doesn’t work when simply cutting him down to ranking him by the plot twist. Disney really needs a new track record. Can you make a list for the most shocking plot twists in animated movies? Here's a good one: *Mighty Eagle & Zeta - The Angry Birds Movie 2.* "When the Birds and Pigs arrive on Eagle Island, the Mighty Eagle backs out and reveals to them that Zeta is a woman scorned and was his ex-fiance. As if that wasn't unexpected enough, when Mighty Eagle arrives to surrender, Zeta, more furious than ever upon seeing him again after all those years, angrily reveals to him (real name Ethan) that Debbie, who up until that moment seemed to be just another one of her minions, is _their daughter._ Not even Disney could come up with a twist that clever.

We do learn more of Hans backstory in the novel revealing that he had been bullied his brothers and while his father did live him, he had an "Only the strong shall survive" mentality and saw Hans as the weaker son hense being the thirteenth in line. My boyfriend and I were talking about this just the other day. We were talking about how Coco and Monster's Inc did so much better than say Frozen, which came out of nowhere and had 0 build up. The point of a twist is to connect the dots and breadcrumbs you were given in a way you didn't expect. With Waternoose, you get hints that something is wrong. While we see him as supportive of Sulley in the beginning, he's melancholic, he's desperate. He says he would do anything to keep his family's company from going under. That coffee scene should be a masterclass on how to set up a twist motive. And along the way, we get more hints that maybe Randal and Fungus weren't alone in this. The build up is subtle but well written enough to where you can pick up on every clue you missed.

I've always said Hans would have made a much better sympathetic villain. If Hans had actually kissed Anna and it DIDN'T WORK, prompting Hans to try to convince Anna to have Elsa killed in order to save Arrendelle. This would have been a huge test for Anna, is her sister more important to her than the safety of the Kingdom? But then Anna slowly realizes that Hans wants to rule Arrendelle more than he actually loves her, forcing Hans to make the decision to turn against Anna, "for the good of Arrendelle." This would have made a much more powerful impact I think.

I actually like Hans as a villian. There are numerous subtle hints that foreshadow Hans' villainy throughout the film before his reveal. When Hans falls back into water and lifts a boat, he gets a dreamy look on his face, likely thinking about the crown. Hans' duet with Anna, "Love is an Open Door", holds a few dark meanings on Hans' side of the song. The lines "I've been searching my whole life to find my own place" and "Love is an open door" secretly represent Hans' quest to dominate a kingdom, and doing so through false romance with Anna (in contrast with her actual love toward himself), who is his door to power. In the same song, Hans doesn't match Anna's movements in some scenes, hinting he's struggling to keep up with her. When Anna decides to leave to find Elsa, Hans protests that he doesn't want her to get hurt, because he hadn't married into the throne yet. However, when she puts him in charge, his objections vanish, and he seems to perk up. When Francis is about to kill Elsa, Hans looks up to the chandelier (presumably noticing the previous arrow had failed to hit its target) and points the weapon up, glancing at the ceiling when he shoots. While Elsa sees Arendelle frozen from her prison cell, Hans sees his reflection, hinting his self-serving nature.

Yeah people forget that a good twist villain is about subtle foreshadowing, not straight-up having the villain act perfectly normally and then suddenly being bad with no clues. It's supposed to surprise you the first time you see it, but provide re-watch value when you go back and notice the hints. Turbo is a great example of this foreshadowing where you just think King Candy is quirky at first, then realize he's nervously covering up what he's done. The fact that he's the _villain_ isn't a secret (which is there from the beginning), the secret is the fact that he's genuinely merciless and a malicious invader rather than being a funny clown. Whereas Hans just acts like a regular guy and then is suddenly the villain at the last minute.

Hey Animat, this is for the Q&A, so I think this question is appropriate to put in the comment section of a list of the best twist villains: what makes a good Twist Villian? I’ve put the trope in a few of my stories since I have a soft spot for it, but I’ve thinking about how to do them right. Can you give us some pointers on how to do it right?

❤💖 To be honest Mat, I don't have an issue with plot twist or plot twist villains if done right, well written or well-executed in animated film, live action film or tv show. The best plot twist animated film villain would be hands down King Candy from King Candy where he started off as a iconic video game but his toxic obsession being racer and winner made him a villain and even overthrowing Vanellope to take over another game. What a villain! Some work, some are good, some are ok, some are pretty bad, forgettable and predictable. Sure can be cliche but if done right. 😃😀😄😁😊 👍🏻 💖❤

10:55 "Hans is like Gaston, but with more brain & brawn" I'd say Hans is more like Scar from the Lion King. He wanter to overthrow Elsa & Anna so he rule Arendelle like Scar wanted to overthrow Mufasa & Simba so he could be king of the Pridelands. Hans blamed Elsa for Anna's "supposed" death like Scar blamed Simba for Mufasa's death(when it was actually Scar who killed Mufasa)

Ups’w twist villain is my favorite as he shows very clearly how serious he is, as when he pops up at their house to find the bird first thing he does is light the house on fire. It surprised me and then I was like “oh shit he’s serious.” It was very good.
