Most high-end watch images in ads or even on websites (Omega and Rolex, for example) are not photos of the watch, but computer generated images of the watch. That is why you have to go see them in person. Years ago I was planning on getting a silver dial Speedmaster until I saw it in person and decided I liked the black dial one better.

Hey Tristan, love your content as always. I often listen to your video's during my commute in the car and the audio (besides the intro) is always very quiet. Maybe you could apply a modest compressor and some gain in post to level out the audio a bit so there are less peaks and they are closer to -3dB to -1dB. Since what happens now is I turn up the volume and I can hear you fine, but then an ad comes on and I jump in my seat how loud it is XD

I came across that Richard Mille thing only weeks ago when my cousin´s foster son (who is now 20) mentioned the brand. He is very much into top brands in every category, the more pretentious the better. Right now he wears a nice vintage Tissot PR516 that was handed down to him by my late uncle who was a big watch enthusiast (and from whom I have my Junkers and my Poljot Flieger Chronograph). Maybe he´ll find his style without going after Richard Mille hommages by the likes of Invicta. 😉

Watches like the Richard Mille look like something I'd appreciate more if it were a table, desk, or mantle clock, large enough to appreciate the mechanical artistry. I've seen several watches I would appreciate more if they were a personal desk clock. I think of several designs of the JLC Atmos clock that are lovely to sit and contemplate the design and engineering of the piece.

Not wanting to be impulsive, I researched my first automatic and about 5 years ago found your channel and you recommended the Bambino. So I bought three - nothing impulsive about that right? They are all beautiful and each with it's own personality including how accurate they are or are not - one of them is actually pretty accurate. Since then I have bought several other automatics that you recommended and the most accurate one is my Junghans Max Bill. It's funny how automatics have their own character each one. The Invicta Automatic Professional 30093 is a beauty and it looks like a Rolex and it's quite accurate believe it or not only losing about maybe a minute every other day. it has a lot of energy so can go for a long time. I got it for 98 bucks at a Marshalls, but it seems like a watch worth much more than that. I have a quartz Boeing watch I won at a Christmas party. a Casio G-Shock, a Citizen Blue Angels. Another HUGE Invicta quartz. The Max Bill is probably the only watch I have that most would not consider junk.

Giving this a "Like" and subscribing because of the "Hellraiser" puzzle box beside the lava lamp. 16:56 Along with this shimmering commentary: "A *real* watch is a refinement; it's a tradition. You can hand it down a generation--no matter what the cost of the timepiece. It shows personal style and sends a subconscious signal that the wearer is a person that takes time seriously. It elevates an outfit when matched correctly. It can be a long-life companion; there in the key moments of your life. And also a gateway to learning and enjoyment: every time I see my grandfather's pocket watch, I feel a physical connection to a person (unfortunately) no longer with us. How can you [in the case of smart watches] attach sentimental meaning to something that stops working after a few years and you have to throw away?"

Reason #2 hit home for me....the Smartwatch!! I just recently upgraded my smartphone, & along with a new tablet, I decided to go with my very first Smartwatch!! And yes, I can agree....they don't always "go," with everything, ie, a certain outfit ( a tuxedo or suit & tie), but my main reason for acquiring one is to keep up with the times. They are the "wave," of the future, & like smartphones of today vs. 15 years ago ( when they were first released) I'm sure they'll be a lot more one can do with a Smartwatch years down the road. But I still also have one foot in the past & still adore my "collection," of real watches, as well, & will continue wearing them, as well......even with that certain suit & tie, lol!! Cheers!! P.S. I also agree with yiu about the "debt," factor!! While certain brands make great watches, ie, Rolex, Omega, Audemars Piguet, Patek Phillipe, ect., NO WATCH IS WORTH GOING INTO DEBT FOR. Save your money for it!! You'll be glad you did!! 🙂😁🤣🤣

100% on the last advice. better having a good homage as a beater than supporting fakes and also criminal industries with questionable work ethics. there is nothing wrong with having a Seiko Tank Solar instead of a fake Cartier Tank. (Also you get a really nice timepiece with minimum service efforts because of solar) Watches shall be fun. I am lucky enough to already have my grailwatch I always wanted. It isnt by any means the priciest timepiece in the world, but the story, the heritage and everything surrounding it, makes it priceless for me. (its also a vintage piece from the 70s in mint and perfectly serviced condition. I wear it on special occasions and important celebrations and it has great sentimental value)

As a TGV fan boy (well a Hugo fan boy really), I eventually had to have a Flighty, even more so after I watched Mark from Long Island Watch's terrific video tutorial on the use of the slide bezel. Anyway, being slightly seedy on a Saturday morning I headed off to E-bay, At $400 AUD for the sellers last brand new one I thought what the hell not much to loose and heaps to gain. However, when I received the watch there was a sticker on the case back that said Made in Thailand. I can find no information online about Seiko producing there. Also, The large yellow seconds hand stops when it reaches midnight - I start it off in the morning and it stops at midnight. Alas, maybe as TGV suggests here I have fallen prey to the grey market. I still love the look of the watch, it doesn't look fake to my eye - and I have seen plenty of fakes on my travels to Thailand - and I guess I will just have to restart the stopwatch each time I wear it.

Well done, Tristano. I hope someday you might consider adding a category: any watch that is manufactured with a precious metal that inflates the price by 500% or more beyond the worth of the metal. At the moment I'm thinking of the 18K Tudor Back Bay, which at most has $2500 worth of gold in it, but the price jumps from around $4,000 for the steel model to more than $16,500 for the 18K version. There are plenty of other equally notorious examples.

TGV, just a point of view: I have three children and they never wore a watch because they felt it was redundant; their mobile told the time so no need. Finally when smart watches came out they felt it was cool to have something around their wrist. FF now my two boys sport the 20 year old Tudors I bought for them when they were toddlers and recently they bought Seiko dive watches for everyday use, while my teenage daughter sports a Casio F-91W (Clear) on her right wrist, while still holding on to "my" smart watch on the left. (I always forgot to charge it so I gave it to her). The moral of the story is that smart watches at least made it cool for the millennials and Gen Z to have something around their wrist and thus making it an easier transition into automatic watches.

Hi TGV A man in a nice suit wearing a smart watch...I always think “you’re a bit too smart to be really smart”😆 But I don’t think that the smart watches really is a treat to the real watch industry as much at the same level as the quartz crisis was. Think there’s a growing trend of going analog as our world goes increasingly digital. You can see this valuing of non digital craftsmanship products when it comes to cars, hifi (vinyl records) and...watches. A lot of people has a smart watch for all the convenient functions, but a real watch for dressing up... They know very well that a REAL watch is mechanical. That’s probably the reason that the prices has gone trough the roof - but that’s another problem🙄 Otherwise, thanks for all the good advice and keep up the good work👍

BAD VALUE!!! .... and yet the juvenile curious side of me goes hmmmm I wonder??? How bad could it really be??? Could I be surprised??? Never seriously considered a watch l Iike that ... why not??? That’s only true if you actually pay attention to what social media tells you! I personally don’t give a shit about it. I buy the watches that I like and I buy them for myself and not to please anyone else. I also don’t fall victim to what the “in- crowd” thinks I should have. Lastly, all those posers buy the hype watches only so they can show off and they’re stupid enough to pay massively inflated prices for it. In other words, stop caring about what the people that are of no value to you say or think and start doing you! 🙂

While I partially agree with you, I believe that social media had a tremendously positive impact on the watch community. Mainly by making the hobby more attainable, understandable for masses. It allowed tons of watch enthusiasts around the world to connect, share, educate each other and help with developing interest and taste in watches. Thanks to social media I learned so much about movements, modding, fixing watches. Learned and bought the brands and models I would've never known otherwise. Found friends and fellow watch nerds. Saw hilarious dramas unfold. All in all it's not the social media itself but the way we use it and allow it to influence us. I love to consume KZbin, reddit, WUS, Watchcrunch and many other resources, but I never really buy anything solely based on what I see there. Take TGV - I frequently disagree with him and certainly don't share his taste in watches, but I do enjoy his content.

This does bring up the 100 good watches vs 1 AWESOME watch collector’s conundrum. Modern manufacturing and CAD have allowed many talented watch designers with a vision to turn out some awesome pieces that aren’t breaking the bank. If a watch as rugged and “functionally beautiful” as a marathon was produced in 1960 and sold at the same price as a Patek customers would say it was worth more money than the hand built slightly imperfect Nautilus. Nowadays manufacturers have all but perfected mass production and need in house hand made pieces to ask outrageous sums for or the pricing seems absolutely absurd. Does that mean that the Nautilus is going to function better than the GSAR? Not at all, they serve the same purpose and if we were comparing them side by side, apples to apples like a steel diver vs a steel diver, in the real world, one might be ever so slightly better at performing its duties than the other but is that tiny difference worth a 90,000$ premium? Lol hell no! Enthusiasts like us place more value on them as jewelry because we don’t necessarily need a watch. If your life absolutely depended on your timepiece would you rather be wearing an FP Journe or a Casio? Exactly lol. I’m willing to bet that if you took any individuals collection of ten 1000k watches and stuck them in a closet with someone else’s collection of ten 1,000,000$ watches and opened that closet 100 years later that the “cheap” pieces won’t have just turned to dust because they weren’t expensive. There are very few valid reasons for buying expensive vs good that I can think of, maybe appreciation as an investment instead of for wearing pleasure? Point is just because something is expensive doesn’t mean it’s that much better, and just because something is good doesn’t mean it needs to be expensive. I can buy any watch I want. Seriously. No watch is out of my reach. I have been blessed/lucky to have picked some good investments at the right time. I wear a Tudor BB58 every single day and it makes me as happy if not more so than my neighbor who wears a different rose gold Rolex every day of the week simply because they were costly. Don’t buy into the madness!!

Completely agree that seeing a watch in the flesh is essential if you intend to actually wear it. I bought a rose gold flyback chronograph online and when it arrived I hated how it sat on my wrist and immediately returned it. I also absolutely loved the Tudor BB58 but decided to go to a dealer to try it on before buying, and I'm so glad I did because it looked like a child's toy on my wrist. The opposite can also be true; while I was in a jewellers one day I asked to try on a white dialled Omega Seamaster Professional, a watch I've always thought looked awkward and ungainly, but when I saw it on my wrist I fell in love. I have never seen any watch suit any wrist as well as that Seamaster suited mine. TL;dr always try a watch on before committing to buying it

Recently found your channel and rediscovered my Love for watches. I wanted to thank you for talking about replicas. I didn't even consider the negative impacts, and so didn't hesitate to buy fake watches, but since then I have found quite a few lower level watches that I genuinely Love. My Casio MTP-4700 that I got for $6 is one of my favorites now, and as much as I like my Submariner and can appreciate it, I don't ever have any occasion where it feels appropriate to wear it.

I recently made an impulse purchase of a 1965 Vulcain watch from Switzerland. Seller had a good reputation from buyers and stated the watch was in working order. The price was low so I purchased it. Got it and the photos were spot on, in fact it looked better than shown. However, when I put it on, after about 30 minutes it was running really fast. I did some online investigating and found several reasons it could run fast. I decided against returning it and take a chance it can be fixed. If not, it's a beautiful reminder of what can happen when making an impulse buy.

If another competitor can make something similar for much cheaper and of good quality then I'm gunna go for it. It doesn't matter if Rolex made it first. I just wanted to give you some constructive criticism: Since you like to create longer videos with several segments you should look into adding timestamps in your videos - that way if a viewer looks for information on one specific watch/subject he can easily skip to it. Especially in your really long videos (podcasts) that would be a nice addition. Apart from that i absolutely love that you add a lot of history and personal experience to your videos instead of just keeping it short. Have a great day :)

Too many people caring more about the name or logo on the watch than the piece itself. We are all guilty of not wanting to step down a notch after hitting a certain milestone/level on products. I play guitar and can certain confirm that playing a $2000 guitar doesn’t make you better than when playing a $500 guitar. Same goes with watches. Appreciate the time piece for what it is and you can’t go wrong.

The guitar comparison doesn’t make sense. The reason for buying a better guitar is not to make you a better guitarist, but to have something that sounds better, feels better and is nicer to play. I have to disagree about the second hand reputable watch dealers, as many of them have ridiculous prices, for example I have seen many second hand watches that are not in pristine condition, sold by them at the same price of a new watch (same model) sold by a Grey Market dealer. Paying used at the same price as new, that doesn't make any sense, at least not to me. I have bought from many watches from Grey Market dealers and it's not true at all, that their support is bad, it depends on each shop some are good and some are bad, so sorry but I'm not buying those "avoid" things. Thrift stores, garage sales and pawn shops have allowed me to fuel this habit without costing an arm and a leg.
