The reason _QM2_ 's forecastle is as long as it is because she was built as an ocean liner, or at least a dual-purpose liner. The breakwaters were even added to do the best they could to ensure the waves of the Atlantic wouldn't break the forward superstructure. But the boss at Carnival who commissioned her (forget his name) insisted on balcony cabins, which may be what ticks you off so much about her: despite the characteristics that make her an ocean liner, _QM2_ also greatly resembles a cruise liner, and if she wasn't as large as she is, I doubt the designers would have agreed to putting balcony cabins on something expected to do the traditional transatlantic crossing, because that's pretty deadly. Also because a certain capacity and speed was insisted upon during construction, she was made too long to use the Panama Canal, which meant using a longer route. If she'd been permitted to be built more along traditional ocean liner lines, you'd probably like her a lot more, but then how much would modern passengers like her? Ships are designed to fulfill the purpose for which they are designed. This includes cruise liners. They are designed to wander up and down coasts with as many people aboard as possible, so often they don't go for flowing or strong-looking designs, they go for putting hotels and city blocks on top of hulls. And amusement parks. It's absurd on the face of it, but it obviously works. There's no practical reason to ever go on a cruise liner, since they're a luxury entertainment, but lots of people do.

Can’t agree with you on a couple, Especially the Queen Elizabeth, I think she looks magnificent, and the QEII is stunning. I agree with you on Normandy, they totally ruined her. The new Cunard liners have more in common with cruise ships - they look like a block of flats. Keep the passion, big thumbs up

Mostly due to the fact that they come from the vista class of cruise ships. It's cheaper to buy previous designs and customize the interiors than it is to completely build a new ship, with a new design. Also, its cunard trying to keep up with other modern cruise lines.

IMHO Norway’s 1990 refit DID take away a lot of her exterior beauty, but it did extend her commercial viability, as those added cabins proved to be very popular.

You can’t grade Great Eastern based on the fact that she’s designed in the typical style of the age. “She has no superstructure”, most ships at this time didn’t. Was her career shit, yes. But I completely disagree with it being on this list. Same with the Britannia, how are you gonna grade it based on the features it had when those features were the norm during that period.

The gap between the funnels was the result of the central coal bunker located there for better stability ... above of the space of nothing was the main dining room 1st class a 3 deck cathedral for food, while in British sips the 1 deck canteens had been prefered ... but I understand your Britishers pov, and having Scottish relatives I aquainted a lot of Britishers

In my opinion the Queen Elizabeth would be in my top 10 best looking ships. The only main difference between her and the Mary is the funnels. But I do see what you mean. My number 1 ugliest ship (if we’re including cruise ships) would be the Symphony of the Seas. It’s quite literally a box with verandahs. I also don’t like the “2 tower” design on the inside. I can find beauties in almost all ships though, so I don’t really hate any ships I’ve seen so far.

While I understand your sentiment, I don't think I could have put Queen Elizabeth at the top of the list. Unlike the Queen Mary and Normandie, she never had the chance to run as a passenger liner before WWII, and that the retrofitting to a passenger liner after the war left something to be desired. (To be fair, Britain HAD just fought a long and costly war.) I had heard that, unlike Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth was a "cold" ship.

Well i knew a video made with KineMaster would be garbage.., thanks for keeping the tradition. Ok queen Mary 2 is NOT a cruise ship. She's an ocean liner through and through. Made with thicker steel that regular ships. Longer bow etc. Queen Victoria is built like this because SHE IS a cruise ship. They didn't built her with an ocean liner design in mind. As for the rest it doesn't make sense. You say that queen Elizabeth is bad looking right? And then saying she looks like queen Mary. Well I don't know.., maybe they were sister ships? Well you get off to a bad start by misspelling the name of Aquitania. Great Eastern was built at a time when ships as we know them were evolving so putting her in your list was pointless. Equally, your inclusion of Britannia. Oceanos, a very good conversion of passenger cargo liner into a cruise ship. Finally, the Queen Elizabeth was an improved and refined version of the Queen Mary, certainly the superior ship of the two. It seems as though your views and opinions as superficial and based upon zero research and probably limited knowledge.

Queen Elizabeth - The Ultimate Ship" published by Carmania Press. It has been described as being the definitive history of that ship. If you are able to find a copy I hope that you'll enjoy reading it.

Great eastern was made of iron. And tbh your wrong about most ships in this vid. Most have been designed with many factors taken into account there for getting to how they look with all this taken into account makes them beautiful by design. IE most modern Cunard ships for example won’t have the super structure or lines of ocean liners of old. Why because they have cruising at the core of its concept and designed for passenger numbers and on board entertainment facilities over looks. So to be fair they may not be the most beautiful ocean liner but as far as cruise ships slash ocean vessel then it looks okay. So looking back over the history of ships I’d say there is a lot of them you may need to see before doing one of these again. And I’m not saying this as nasty but I feel it’s a bit unfair to the designers of some of these great ships and to the men that built them to be calling them ugly. Plus Isambard Kingdom Brunel died during the construction of the Great Eastern and his ship was way ahead of its time. He was a visionary that shaped the Industrial Age and his Great Eastern laid the first trans Atlantic cable and part of ship still exist today out side Liverpool football club. So just think with out that ship they would be years behind to where they actually where with communications over the Atlantic.

Whilst I know opinions are like an anus, everyone has one) I found your defense if your opinion pretty empty. Your judgement of the Norway is based on photos and not experience. Her 2nd renovation was pretty appealing to most ship lovers. But it kept her relevant for another decade, and had NCL not been in such bad financial shape,her maintenance and care would have been better. Even with the extra decks, she maintained her lines, and was still a beautiful ship to sail in. The modern ships: Vista Class Carnival ships, Gem and Dawn class with NCL are products of the times, as was Britannia. Finally, Queen Elizabeth 1940, ugly ? She was graceful and powerful all at once, with beautiful sweeping lines and luxurious interiors Queen Mary is lovely and her interiors slightly warmer, but in terms of sleek modernity, Liz had the winning hand.

These are some of the most nonsensical and uninformed opinions I’ve ever heard. - The “big blocky superstructure” was popular at the time. Titanic had a blocky superstructure. - Great Eastern is an arguably great looking ship for its time. Yes, she had masts and a paddle wheel, as _every_ liner did at the time! Isembard Brunel designed her like the genius he was. - Queen Victoria, although boxy, is a through and through cruise ship - that’s to be expected. - Queen Mary 2 is probably the best-looking passenger ship afloat. The majority of superstructure sits behind the lifeboats for stability and safety and she looks fine. Other ocean liners have superstructure set back behind the lifeboats as well. - I agree SS Norway was ugly but hey, cruise ship conversion. - Norwegian cruise lines does make some of the ugliest ships, but again the bar should be lower for cruise ships. - Kaiser Wilhelm Der Grosse and her sister ships were the first liners to have four funnels. The designers could do whatever they pleased having designed the first four stackers. And their designs are pretty iconic. - Britannia was from a _totally_ different time. The funnel was fine and paddle wheel was _standard._ She should be judged against other ships of her time. - Oceana was of hardly any significance even at the time. - Your opinion on Queen Elizabeth is completely invalid. It just comes down to nonsensical and ignorant subjective opinion. QE was considered a sleeker and more evolved form of her older sister Queen Mary. Her interiors were similar to QM’s as well. Please be a little more open-minded and better informed, especially when passing needless criticism on classic historical ships whose designs have never been associated with ugliness.

Have u ever heard of Costa victoria, Allegra & marina? Those were famous for being “ugly”. U also a do realise NCL pearl has three sister ships; Jade, gem & jewel, so why not mention them? I’ve sailed on the NCL Jade and queen Victoria and they are both stunning, facts! You cannot just say something and then label it as “your opinion”.
