When it comes to "Anastasia", what makes it great is the animation and the awesome Oscar-nominated music. The songs are catchy, the animation is stunning, and the characters are great. Also, "The Prince of Egypt" is an amazing adaptation of the story of Moses. Love the music and the animation is amazing!

What a great list! I remember they showed Twice Upon a Time on Cartoon Network AGES ago, when I was a kid. Back then, I only watched cartoons just for the sake of watching cartoons, not appreciating the art of animation, so that movie put me off just a little, since it looked weird. Now that I'm in love with the art of animation, I'd love to give this movie a try! I also remember how beautiful the movie Anastasia was! (Before I knew the name Don Bluth, I'll admit I also thought it was a darker side of Disney, too.) The Rescuers Down Under to me was a case of the sequel being so much better than the original, something that in the 90's was a bit of an issue with Disney, considering their "Direct to DVD/VHS" phase XP The 2d animated Dreamworks films were also wonderfully done, I had fun with El Dorado and only recently watched The Prince of Egypt, and it was so well done!

It was like a dream that only I had and no one else could recall and I was crazy. 10. I remember RobTheWonderful (another animation reviewer I highly recommend checking out) talked about this film a while ago, and it looks really intriguing. I think this might've also influenced Pen Ward with creating Finn and Jake for "Adventure Time." 9. Among all the characters you mentioned, you forgot my favorite (besides the eagle): JOANNA! With that aside, I still think it's pretty good. 8. Certainly a great adaptation of a great book, even with its different ending. 7. I thought this one was decent. The animation and songs were great and some of the characters were likable, but it still seemed to rely too much on emulating Disney's formula at the time and I personally thought the bat was kind of annoying (even if he's voiced by Hank Azaria). Still better than Bluth's other 90s films. 6. "Prince of Egypt" was a masterpiece, "El Dorado" was entertaining, and "Spirit" was a pretty good adventure (especially one that avoided being a stereotypical animated animal film). Haven't seen "Sinbad" in its entirety, so I can't give my full opinion on it. 5. Another Disney classic! As for the gargoyles: I liked Laverne, but I didn't care for the other two.

Why should Dreamworks be ashamed of making Road to El Dorado, Prince of Egypt, and Spirit? Those movies are masterpieces and, in my opinion, better than most of their movies nowadays. (Sinbad was alright but not a fave of mine. The other three are in my top 5 favorite Dreamworks films. Just the same, I'm glad all four are getting some deserved recognition.) Also, I am absolutely ECSTATIC to see The Hunchback of Notre Dame on this list! 😍

Anastasia was my freakin childhood movie, I’d watch it as many times as possible, even now whenever I felt like it.

Nothing personal, but I think need to call you out on what you said about animal farm. I have read the book, and seen the animated movie you are referring to; not only was the ending changed like you mentioned, but so was the windmill's destruction and the death of Mr. Jones. I could go on about even more events that were different between the book and the movie, but the point is that it's nearly as different from its original book as the Hunger Games movie.

Twice Upon A Time is easily one of my favorite movies ever... Watched it over at my cousin's over the summer back when I was like... 8. Havent seen it since but I still remember it quite fondly and have seen clips here and there that refresh my mind of it. It's great to see somebody else knows about it and recognizes it.

The too recent underrated or overlooked ones, mostly due to limited USA release (that causes apparently an unnoticed issue) or strong unexpected competition, would be: Kubo and the two strings Capture the flag Early man Breadwinner

My issue with The Rescuers Down Under was there were so many conservation movies/shows in the 90s. We had Captain Planet, Widget the World Watcher, Fern Gully--and that is just off the top of my head. You know you are in a 90s movie, if the villains are just about polluting, destroying nature and killing animals just because they are rare (but only the really cute merchandisable ones--none of the scary ones). It got to the point where I am all, "you know... I kind of understand the villains from Captain Planet--let's fuck up the planet"

I LOVED Anastasia growing up. I wasn’t super familiar with animation studios at the time, so I didn’t know if it was a Disney film or not, so finding out it wasn’t made by Disney was surprising. More surprising, however, was when I found the movie on Disney+.

spirit stallion of the cimarron is the most emotional DreamWorks movie , that handled the it's drama really good . I believe the movie is good for children . Sinbad is more about action , adventure and self perception , which is suitable to the movie theme . road to el dorado (in my opinion ) is a perfect in everything and did all elements good . It's sad how medicore movies like despicable me and the secret life of pets , made high box office , while great movies in these list didn't .

I loved the Rescuers DownUnder as a kid! The CG opening was the first time I had seen anything like that before in an animated film. At least not since the final scene in the Great Mouse Detective, which I also loved.

I’ve heard of all these movies (some of ‘em only from you), but I haven’t seen any save for clips of Animal Farm when I read the book for class in high school. Time to change that. Well, save for Hunchback. Love that movie, and totally agree that it’s one of Disney’s most underrated films.

i always thought that Hunckback of Notre Dame was kinda weird to fit in the disney line up, because while we have movies like Little Mermaid, Sleepy Beauty, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs or even Dumbo and Alice in Wonderland with twisted and dark moments or elements in its story they werent as dark and depressing as Hunckback, yeah is lighthearted for the most part but its really a very depressing and overall "grey" movie if you think about the background time its set, this wasnt a good time for people living by christianity rules were all that wasnt their definition of "justice" and "perfection" were some sort of twisted abomination that had to be destroyed and feared because was or either a witch or the son of the devil or the spawn of the devil. Yeah it does portait this subjects VERY WELL, like after the scene were the Hunckback is enjoying the carnival Frollo makes him suffer for defying him to come outside with all the people, and then the colorful sunny warm day of fun and games turns into a grey-tormented day of mockery and punishment because people just dont understand things that are "different" and they just fear what they dont understand and bash it into the ground because one person with power says that its not normal thus we must fear it because its not one of the creations of the lord. Yeeeeeaaaaahhhhh, its MUCH DARKER than what it shows you so i always thought it was kinda strange and odd for disney to have such darker movie that doesnt quite fit with the rest of the line up, even if they do have darker moments or themes.

If we talk about Disney's darkest movies, The Hunchback of Notre Dame is much better than The Black Cauldron. The former's darkness lies in the themes is dealing with, while the latter's darkness lies just in the visuals. Just because a movie is dark doesn't mean it's good; what it really matters is the execution. The Black Cauldron, while ambitious and has some good ideas, failed at delivering a deep and coherent story as well as fully developed characters, not to mention that the Horned King is such a shallow and overrated villain. The Hunchback of Notre Dame, on the other hand, is a true masterpiece that deserves more attention. Although it's not a faithful adaptation of the original novel, the movie managed to deliver a consistent and emotional story, great characters, an excellent villain, gorgeous animation and a powerful soundtrack.
