That’s a great list of underrated guitarist you listed there. Lifeson for sure never gets the props he has earned. I also think Schenker, but for obvious reasons. Addiction and bad attitude has always been the albatross around his neck, but his live solo in Rock Bottom on Strangers In The Night is one of the great solos ever put to recording. I also feel that Glenn Tipton has always been underrated as a guitarist. Love many of his solos.

I don't know who would be on the rest of my list, but my number 1, who I believe doesn't get enough recognition for not only his guitar playing but his songwriting too, would be George Harrison. The guy is often overshadowed by his bandmates in the Beatles but you have to admit that some of the most recognisable Beatles songs were taken to new levels by this man. He might not be too technical, but he knows how, and maybe is the epitome of serving the song. It's such a shame that his guitar sound (as recognisable as it is) didn't really serve him as well as he served the songs. But I will stand by him, his playing and his tone always, as my favourite musician and songwriter ever.

@user-nj5ci1rd7o How Cool. I met him one time as well in Seattle. In 1984 or so, I was going to school in Eastern Washington but had to come into town to cover for an old co worker as we had both worked for the Supersonics basketball team and he needed me to work a couple games for him while I was on spring break. After the game we went to a bar close to the venue of the game. We were sitting just outside the bar and inside the bar was a group of exuberant folks who were playing some kind of game in which disposable drink coasters were being flung around like frisbees. As fate would have it one of the coasters came flinging over to our table and hit me right in the forehead....no big deal, actually kind of funny.....a few seconds after that the person that I assumed had tossed the coaster came over to retrieve his weapon and apologize. I happened to be a HUGE Pat Travers fan and I felt the need to let this guy know that he looked just like Pat Travers and without hesitation he dramatically replied "I am Pat Travers". I just about shit. He shook my hand and headed back to the bar. My friends were looking at me like "that's it"? "You are not going to name every song on every album and what key it is in and how you can play all of his songs on your guitar?"........ I was kind of embarrassed that I didn't realize he was in town, but I had not lived in the are for almost two years......This was too much for one of my friends, who was used to dealing with famous people all the time went back and told Pat what a huge fan I was, and the next thing you know we were all flinging coasters and made honorary members of their posse that night. I still have the coaster signed by the whole band with a funny quote and drawing from PT. It says "when you get to the end of your rope, hang on". Having worked for the Sonics for almost a decade, I had come to learn that it is not always pleasant meeting your heroes but this was truly a grand slam. I still don't think a day goes by that I don't listen to at least one of his songs

Man, those clips of Albert Lee were just shredding. I always balk at Lifeson being considered underrated. The guy is on just about every guitar lover's top ten, and deservedly so. You have to be underrated to make an underrated list, and Lifeson is one of the most appreciated guitarist there is. IF people arent sure he has the chops (are there any people like this?) listen to the Necromancer (off of their least commercially successful album in their catalog). He does it all in that song. Texture, shredding, blues riffs metal style, Right hand power one minute, intricate work the next. just absolutely kills it in that song. (one of many many many)

Dave Davies, look at his over 50 years of playing guitar. He influenced many musicians with his pioneering use of distortion. Over 30 years with his brother in the Kinks and many solo albums. Dave influenced hard rock, heavy metal, and punk rock. After the Kinks broke up, he even worked on movie soundtracks. He was often overshadowed by his brother Ray, Dave Davies could write songs and play with the best of them.

When I think underappreciated guitarists the first one that comes to mind is Lonnie Mack. When his instrumental records Wham and Chicken Pickin came out in 63/64 a lot of players were shocked that anyone could play with that kind of speed and precision . He raised the bar for lead guitar playing. There was nobody else around at that time who was playing like that and it would be a few years before anyone else released any music that featured lead playing with that level of skill and dynamics. Mack was ahead of his time.

I have zero disputes with this list. It's excellent. The viewers here are very knowledgable. They continually point out the greatest under appreciated guitarists. Thanks for listening to the people. The guys from Kansas is a fantastic one considering how big the band was and how their music is still relevant. Now, a note about Alex Lifeson....I would say for about 30 years he was criminally underrated and under appreciated. But in the last 10-11 years he's gotten a lot of recognition he deserved and finally started popping up on "Greatest Guitarist" lists, which really never happened before for him. Even Rolling Stone had him on their shitty list a few years ago, which would have been unheard of before they deemed Rush "cool". But for his entire career, and being in the shadow of all-time greats like Geddy Lee and Neil Peart for so long, still fairly underrated. The bottom line is he's a much greater and influential player than the recognition he's gotten/gets.

First, love your vids! Second, the term "underrated" to means to the "music critics" whos usually wouldn't know a good album if you glued it to a brick and hot the m with it. Some of these guys I have never heard of so than you for bringing new axemen to my attention. I'm always looking for new music. Most of these guys are very well know to their fans and anyone in the Rock world. It's the Pop culture that doesn't know true musicians and listens to the top 40 where probably every song can be played with the same four chords. So when the term "underrated" is used, these axemen are underrated to those who think boy bands are great....LOL Keep Rocking!!!!!👍👍👍👍✌✌✌🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸

Yo, great, well, GOOD list anyway. I loved UFO in the 70s, and Alex Lifeson was the best part of Rush, IMO. But my fave on here is, of course, Rory Gallagher! No biggie, but since he was Irish, his name is pronounced Galla-her, not Galla-gur, the way the English pronounce it. Very sad about his early demise, he sometimes became a man possessed up on stage, just playing like a dervish. Great jokes, as usual, Alan.

Some great players on the list,Roy Buchanan was a fantastic player and one of my favourites.I've been fortunate to see 3 of these players live-Alvin Lee,Albert Lee and Rory Gallagher, they all blew me away with their amazing playing.I think Terry Kath should be up there as well,an unbelievable guitar player taken tragically too soon. His soloing on 25 or 6 to 4 is legendary, great tone and feel, using different pickups and subtle use of the wah pedal.

Saw the Chicago Transit Authority at the Eagles Auditorium in Seattle, summer of '70, opening for the Jeff Beck group -- a night of guitar magic. Kath was outrageous, driving rhythm chops followed by searing leads, incredible. And Beck? Well, Beck was Beck, with Rod Stewart on vocals. I'm sure the ticket didn't cost more than ten bucks.

Alex Lifeson seems to be the most famous for being underrated. Lifeson is not only underrated as a guitarist, but it probably the only one on this list who is underrated in his own band. When you jam with Geddy Lee and Neil Peart, it’s easy to be overlooked. Schenker certainly deserves more credit than he gets. Just his solo in Rock Bottom on the Strangers In The Night Video should put him in any guitarist hall of fame. One of the great guitar solos ever put to recording. Rik Emmett’s awesome guitar playing was too often overshadowed by his tremendous singing voice. The guy has the voice of an angel, great tone and superior range.

What the heck, here’s my list of guitarists who are not only underrated but rarely if ever show up on these sorts of lists. * Chris Poland, from the first two Megadeth albums. Every Megadeth second guitarist who followed owed a lot to his weird, fluid approach. * Sister Rosetta Tharpe, high-energy gospel singer. Badass blues guitar soloist, too. Finally getting some recognition. * Jan Akkerman, from the band Focus. Prime example of a pre-VH shredder. * Danny Cedrone, who played the blistering solo on “Rock Around the Clock” and then died tragically before the song became a hit in 1955. * Bryan Gregory, early lead guitarist with psychobilly legends The Cramps. It’s debatable whether he could even play guitar at all (or if British guitarist Chris Spedding actually played the studio tracks he’s credited for) but the solos on the album Songs the Lord Taught Us really opened up my mind to the potential of all-out noise in a simple, sinful rock ‘n’ roll context. * Joe Maphis - Country picker extraordinaire. MONSTER technique. I mean Godzilla-level. * Leroy “Sugarfoot” Bonner, from Ohio Players. You think funk guitarists only play little chittery chords? Think again. * Ricky Wilson, from the B-52’s. Limited technical abilities, yes. But inventive as hell. And if you’re gonna be remembered for a single riff, you could do a lot worse than “Rock Lobster.” * Malcolm Young - His band mates in AC/DC called him “riff-maker.” He didn’t want the spotlight, he was the reason there was a spotlight in the first place. * Reeves Gabrels - Alt-metal maniac from David Bowie’s band Tin Machine. Only guitarist I’ve heard who caused me to exclaim, “hey, that’s what I wanted to play when I got good enough!”

Not a bad list, but I would have Michael Schenker at 1, and Alex Lifeson at 3 with Criss Oliva (And (lronounced Oooooleeeevaaa) in between at 2. Putting Rik Emmett in was a good choice, as well. Rik is probably the best combo Lead Vocalist/Lead Guitarist out there. But you really scored with Criss Oliva. Savatage is my favorit band and Criss tragically died in 1993, right when he was starting to get serious acclaim. If you go by sheer talent, Criss can’t beat Michael Schenker, who is the number one Hard Rock/Metal guitarist of alltime. But putting Criss at number one on an underrated list is entirely correct. Criss IS the most underrated Hard Rock/Metal player in history.!!!
