My father ran away from home when he was 14 and joined the Army; he lied that he was 18. He was 6 foot tall so he got away with lying about his age. As he was shipping out to Europe, his mother contacted the Army about him. Since he passed boot camp, the Army didn’t want to give him up. So they changed his orders to Europe as and instead shipped him to Panama where he patrolled the Panama Canal. By the end of the war he was 18 and legal and stayed in the Army until 1962. Although he didn’t have to go to Korea due to his prior experience, he nevertheless went to Korea during the Korean War. Unfortunately, he and his group were some of the first US soldiers deployed there, but he was captured and spent the entire time as a POW. When the war ended he was sent home on a ship (he called it a slow boat from China). When he arrived 6 weeks later he weighed less than 100 lbs. His normal height and weight was 6’2” (he grew after joining the Army), and 220 lbs. Only 3 guys made it out from the POW camp, and despite daily beatings he never signed a “confession” like the North Korean military wanted. He told me once that they only fed them a half a bowl of watery rice every day. He said he found wild garlic to add to his diet and that they’re full of vitamin C, so he never got rickets(sp) unlike so many other POWs did.

Oh my word. You & i should talk. My grandfather ran away at 14 and joined the marines. He was a mystery. Combined w the brief amount he spoke of his srvc...His memorabilia, bumper stickers, Purple Hearts (3), & other service medals suggest has fought in WW2, Okinawa, Bay of Pigs, Korea, Japan. That’s all well and good. He was 14 to start with. Then I found his stash of “I’m a Vietnam vet and damn proud!” 🤷♀️ Im trying to make that math work? Idk? My mom won’t speak about him. She says he was a shell shocked crazy person. She should be ashamed. She’s a nurse AND has a MASTERS in EDUCATION. He confided many Korea stories w me. Heartbreaking. Yes he was a bit of a mess. Now a days a 14 yr old boy can’t order tacos by himself without panicking or being triggered. Wtf does that even mean? My grandfather ran away, became a MARINE and served his country. The horrors he saw. The lives he took. And today... we have to *bleep* out the words murder, suicide, rape, etc! Why because the new generation of delicate ears might be offended if they hear it. Unable to live their best life if adversely triggered by reality. My grandfather is rolling over in his grave.

13:00 - My father joined the marines in 1943. He was 17 years old and he had just graduated from high school. He was stationed in the south pacific on a group of islands that were bombed daily by Japanese planes. He told me he caught both malaria and yellow fever during his tour of duty. I'm not sure if he had access to adabrine, but he was so sick he was as worried about dying from malaria as he was from the Japanese bombs. During air raids, they hid in bunkers covered by logs, and any bunkers that were hit directly killed everyone inside.

The KKK is still around sadly. I grew up in a small town in Illinois. I played with the kids across the street, they and their mom were white. The mom married a half black/white man. He was really nice and we all loved him. One night I woke up to the sound of an ambulance across the street. He went to the hospital for smoke inhalation after a cross was burned in his yard. I didn't understand it then and really I still don't. This same town is a tourist town, and I have heard people tell a black person, "this is a sundown town". Ridiculous!

Several writers, including US Navy Rear Admiral Robert Alfred Theobold, have argued that various departments of the US and British governments knew of the attack in advance and allowed it to happen, so the US had a reason to enter the war. In a 46 page booklet entitled 'The truth about Pearl Harbor', released in 1944, John T Flynn argued that Roosevelt and his inner circle had been deliberately provoking the Japanese government before the attack hoping the Japanese government would sanction an attack. What happened there wasn't quite as clear-cut as it may seem on the surface.

You didn't mention that the "family joy" photo's story is that the husband and wife divorced. I believe it was because of infidelity on the wife's part because she thought he'd never return.

Thank you for pronouncing my hometown correctly. Im born and raised in hilo and my god, from the destruction, downtown looks nothing like it was back in the days. I wish those people was more informed about tsunamis to make the escape, yet they took the advantage to try harbor as much fish left in the bay. After the 2nd tsunami hit Hilo, we've built a brick wall that prevents water to be sucked out quickly to help the tsunami form. I appreciate you in having Hilo number 3 on your first run of this vijeo.
