The concept might come off as dated these days, so take it as a retro-trip in EVERY respect: gameplay, humor, characters, etc. I would recommend you start with the OG. There are several re-issues, including one which was a point and click remake.

I think what really happens when people make something great that pays respect to the original IP, it will bring people in who will then look into the old titles, and then any new titles. It will strengthen the whole brand. BG3 while nice appeals more to the DOS fans, and the way it strayed away from BG made me not really want to play the DOS games, which I never got into the first one, so passed on the second. A prime example of this for me is Lord of the Rings. I hated reading as a kid, and avoided even required reading in high school and college, but in my mid 20's Peter Jackson made the LotR movies, and I loved the first one so much that I ended up reading The Hobbit and the LotR trilogy, before The Two Towers came out. To this day, I still read a lot of fantasy books and some comics, and it all goes back to The Fellowship of the Ring being so good and true to the books, that it made me actually learn to read them and really appreciate reading. That also helped me in my RPG playing as well, as I played RPGs since the early 90's but I just skimmed enough to know what to do next until I got into reading. This may be an extreme and rare example but I do think a great game that respect the IP will not only appeal to old fans but will bring the new fans back to the old content as well.

LoTR is indeed the best example. The original video (before I edited 8 minutes out) had a lot of examples from TLoTR, because I think Peter Jackson's trilogy is the very best example ever of this.

@@YeOldEntertainmentWhich is slightly ironic, because there were (and are) a decent number of "first-circle" fans who weren't (and aren't) happy with some of the changes made in the Jackson movies.
@YeOldEntertainment
@YeOldEntertainment 11 ай бұрын
@@benl2140 That's also true of Doom Eternal, The new Larry games, Final Fantasy 7 and to an even greater degree, the new Xcom. I think no product is ever going to do it for 100% for the OG fans. For example... there seems to be some consensus about the Two Towers being the "best of the three films" and it's the one I like the least by a significant margin, because I really don't like how they did the Ents "conversation" compared to the books, I still think they are a fantastic adaptation, but some people are so strict and narrow about what the new entries need to be, that there is zero chance of pleasing them. I think those who fall in the category of "I hate the LoTR films because they fucked up the books" are so few in number compared to the population of people who read the books, watched the films and enjoyed both... that they fall outside the three sigma model.

As a Final Fantasy fan who laughed out loud when SE dropped the teaser of Remake, I applaud them and wanted to burn their HQ at the same time. MASSIVE SPOILER OF FINAL FANTASY VII'S STORY BELOW FFVIIRemake is not a remake on the usual sense. It's a plot device. The game is a sequel to the entire compendium, about both Sephiroth and Aerith realizing that they didn't get what they wanted in the end of VII's story and thus decided to go back in time to correct it. Aerith wanted humanity to survive post-Meteor (which didn't happen on the end of original VII; remember the last FMV that showed Midgar reclaimed by nature in its entirety) and Sephiroth wanted to win the game (possibly by killing Tifa so that Cloud wouldn't be able to correct his memory and making sure that Aerith lives, making Aerith unable to convince the Lifestream to stop Meteor). Remake (also Rebirth and the next one) is a New Game+ for Sephiroth and Aerith. Conceptually, this is awesome, but calling the first game out of a planned trilogy a remake when it's the norm that a remake is just a remake is extremely slimy.

Conceptually it is indeed awesome. In practice? Some seem to like it though I really believe that it will age very poorly. The remake/rebirth games are not at all what anyone was asking for.

I think the TMNT game, and doom really nailed the 2 sides of the coin. A revival of a better looking game that was great, vs a reinterpretation of a beloved game that looks to capture the essence of the game, without just being a new skin. The new sonic game 2d version that I think was a fan made game also really captured the feel of the old games, if that is your thing. I also loved the remake of the original myst game, that really upped the experience, and the immersion. Even though it was the same puzzles, it felt like an entirely new experience. And maybe wasteland to wasteland 2, although there were the fallout games that kinda hijacked the scene of the original wasteland. I happened to get bored of both games, but they definitely felt like they were cut from the same cloth. Diablo 3 can probably go on this list, too. Still waiting for Bully 2, Rockstar, far more than another GTA.

Crafting was terrible. The world map was abysmal (which had the unintended good effect of making exploration matter) Combat was just serviceable, most DLCs were filler, And then you have the persistent problem of the post-apocalyptic themed RPG --> okayish companions at best. (Except Rex! Rex is the best). Now... all THAT aside, yes... it's beyond perfect, because it goes beyond expectations, it has an undisputed place in the podium of games from the 2010s.

- Pretty bold to say TMNT turtles in time is so much better than any other brawler when Streets of rage 2 exists. I love them both equally, but the ending when you can both fight your co-op friend and become the bad guy blew my tiny child mind at the time. Maybe it even started my preference for narrative choices and thus RPG later. - I don't get the "questionable appearances" for Streets of rage, a game filled with punks which have always been about stupid haircuts/outfits - I never thought there had been Leisure Larry games after the end of the point&click era, I only thought of them as "those games with the pervy loser and crass jokes for teenagers" - I wasn't a PC player back then so I'm not sure, but it seems new-Xcom has been more influential than old-Xcom ? Pretty wild for a "re-imagining", but I think you're forgetting a vocal minority with "old fans loved the new one" - Obsidian also had to work with the Bethesda engine, which must be way worse than the Bioware ones they used before to make already pretty buggy games, it's a small miracle that the game runs at all 😄

@@YeOldEntertainment I'm sorry if I came across as overly critical/negative. I really like this channel and because here you're not drowned under hundreds of comments I tend to use critics because I want to start a conversation. Saying "you're 100% right" doesn't get you far besides a like. I also try to limit my walls of text so sometimes I edit out too much and I don't use smileys as much as I should 😅 For Larry, I meant that this video informed me that the series was more than what it looked like at 1st glance. For the punk thing it was more of a joke, plenty of "questionnable appearances" in the series - should have put a smiley I suppose. One game I really hope could be on this list in the future would be Vampire bloodlines 2, but I doubt it and that's an understatement. I don't have much to say about the list itself because either I didn't play the original, or the new one, or even both... But from general video game discourse it seems solid, so good job.

The intro is the only music that has the same volume on both the left and right channel. So my guess would be that you are using speakers, maybe mono-speakers even. My recommendation is -->don't. Use headphones. you won't have that problem with earbuds or headphones.

@@Gothenburg1 it's not a technical issue on whether I'm using speakers or headphones, it's just the volume of the sound or how it's designed. I remember the first video of his that I watched. It was 2 am and I was not expecting such a loud intro. Look, English isn't my first language, so I might struggle to communicate this through text.
