Bear in mind that easy battle difficulty gives you a 3 or 4 times multiplier to auto resolve, meaning that whenever you need to fight a battle there, you are going into an impossible situation. Setting battle difficulty to hard or very hard and then reduce the in battle AI cheats with the slider is the best thing you can do. Otherwise the game lies to so so badly that you feel bad when you lose every battle.

There are a few things that need to be put into context: Spending all gold: The main question here is how your ecomomy is doing. A faction like the dwarves almost always want to do this because they have strong basic income. But when you are playing the vampire coast your settlement income is shit, your money comes from raiding so you're basically living from the gold you have until the next conquest. You might need it for raising the dead and if you wait for two turns you might be able to get an upgrade for your legendary lord. Of course they should spend gold, but it's not always the best choice. Building your settlements: Especially the "garrison everywhere" strategy is not consistent. Again: The Dwarves/ elves and other "civilized" factions almost always want to do this because they have amazing garrisons and amazing garrison buildings. Also each settlement is very valuable to them so they want to defend it. It makes sense. If you're playing the greenskins however it's almost never a good idea unless you have no other idea for the building slot and to much money. The reason is that their income building is simply amazing on the cost/income scale so you almost always want to prioritise that. Also they have really shitty garrison so when a full stack is coming the chance of defending is pretty slim. Additionally there is amost no value put into those settlements. You can rebuild it fast and there is little gold invested. This is why greenskins usually almost exclusively build this when defending a warfront or in a valuable capital that they cannot afford to loose. Basically: Think about what situation you are in and especially what your factions strategy is. Do you build settlements and economy or do you pillage and raid, building little villages you don't care about with a few important bastions and stategical points every now and then.
@icollectbadgers
@icollectbadgers Жыл бұрын
Spending your gold on upgrading money buildings is one of the fastest ways to wreck a Dwarf economy. You dump 4k into the settlement upgrade so that you can dump another 2k into upgrading the Toolmaker, and then to make matters worse maybe you decide to protect your investment by constructing a garrison building. All for an extra hundred gold per turn, meaning it'll take 100 turns before you make a return on your investment. I agree with your overall point though: There are lots of cases where you are better off saving some gold for when you need it rather than dumping into whatever buildings you happen to have available at the time.
@stukaseptember

i would also add few thing s about diplomacy: 1st, don't just declare wars, first check if your target is already in a war with someone and ask them to pay you for declaring war on your target. especially in early game, this money can amount to 1-2 turn worth of gold which will boost you further. In addition, once you familiarize yourself with what factions are "starter fodder" and will die in first 10 turns anyway, just ask AI that is fighting them to pay you for joining war that is gonna end soon anyway. It's free money. example: playing as Kislev, Western Province caravan comes around and thus makes this faction aproachcablle by diplomacy. They are by default fighting Dissenter Lords of Jinshen and will inevitably beat them. So offer to join war for gold or use it as bargaining chip to get trade deal 2nd, if you really want to be friends with some faction, or get trading deal with them and they are playing too hard to get, attack occupy some settlements of their enemies and trade them fro aliance or what ever you want. or even just gold. Also its worth noting that AI values military buildings in settlements over others when setting the diplomatic value 3rd, once you have an aliance, actively assign targets for your allies trough diplomacy window. AI is messy on its own but 9/10, they will actually follow your orders

Hi. Not bad advice, but the bit at the end of section 9 ( 2:40 ) about building defense buildings everywhere.. I've been playing Total War games from the beginning and I've seen the devs trying different things when it comes to defending settlements. Like in Medieval 2 you could house a specific number of specific units for free in a city. Since Rome 2 we have a very limited amount of space in any city. So in a big province, you can have 8,4,4,4 spaces and as the main building takes one, we get 7,3,3,3 so 16 in total. If you play on very hard as I do, you get -4 control and you have to counter that - that's at least one slot. Then we have things a faction might want and need. The Chaos Dwarves can make minor settlements camps or factories. In the first case, you want those 3 slots (mining, scavenging and control). If you have a resource building, that also takes a slot. So if you start building buildings that enlarge your garrison, you will be limiting yourself extremely. In some cases (other races) you can squeeze a military building in most cities, but in other ones you need the space for other things. And if you have a minor settlement at level 1 and a military building at that same level you will get about 2 basic units. Now if your attacked by a very small army, this may matter, but it usually won't. Also, if you're rapidly expanding, and do the sensible thing and build economy buildings first, by the time you get to the military ones, the front line would have moved anyway. Back in Warhammer TW 1 I tried to reinforce every city in my first campaign. Now, if I do build those buildings, I do it just in one or two key locations. It's much better to recruit an army to stop an attack. If your empire has buildings that give you lords on a decent level, say 15, you will usually get a mount and can use his points to make him a great fighter or/and mage of the bat. You should save a few renown units for such a situation as you can recruit them instantly. Now you have a good lord and a few elite units on the way of the enemy. If you have time, recruit another army and fill it with something good in defense (archers, crossbowmen). That's the best strategy.

There's something very, very important to newer players, something that Legend mentioned in one of his videos. It's related to battle difficulty and auto resolve. If you select the easy battle difficulty, it gives 3 or 4 times power multiplayer for your troops in auto resolve. This makes it so you don't have to play any battle, and when you can't win in auto resolve, and you try the battle manually, it's absolutely impossible. This makes many newer players feel terrible and think they're very bad at the game, while in reality, the game is lying to them. The best thing you can do when starting the game, is put battle difficulty in hard or very hard and then change the battle bonuses to the easy stats. This will give you reasons to play the battles and learn them in situations where you can more substantially do better than the auto resolve. As you then improve, you can rise the in battle AI bonuses to a place you feel confortable. I personally play with no bonuses for me or the AI, but that's entirely my own personal preference.

Another mistake i could name is spreading too much. When you find a chain of poorly defended settlements and you capture them too fast, you might have everything unser control until a random faction nearby decides to declare war on you. More provinces does not always mean better

With Point 4 I don’t agree with leaving my assassin’s out of the army. Even when they take out another hero it’s still a low chance die roll if they actually kill VS wound their target. For some factions, Bretonnia for example, the Assassin hero is the Paladin, which is also my extremely strong melee hero. There’s no way I’m leaving my paladins out of the army. In my experience the best heroes to leave out of the armies are the ones with Block Army. The ability to pin an enemy army in place for a turn me is far more impactful than simply having an assassin roam around. And as a bonus typically the heroes that block armies are also the assassin’s (but not always).

For number 5, knowing when to tell your units to walk instead of run is very important. If you're out of range of the enemy's ranged units and you're just moving towards them, there's no reason to charge. Your units will be tired going into melee while the enemy troops were sitting pretty and relaxing. Leave the charge until the last moment.

The fatigue penalties for movement are near non-existent in Warhammer TW units can pretty much run all day experiencing little to no penalty meanwhile combat will chew through fatigue in a matter of minutes. It's why things like Fatigue reductions are pretty much pointless for infantry and why fatigue spells are so devastating on SE dualists. TBF I kind of miss movement fatigue it was one of those things that made TW: empire/Shogun 2 maps feel so much bigger. Then again sieges would suck even more than they do already.

The biggest thing that makes save scumming so necessary is that a settlement almost always drops a level whenever it is conquered. So if the AI conquers a settlement and then you reconquer it, it will be almost always worthless. A tier 4 settlement will be set back to a nearly useless tier 2 settlement which is a absolutely devastating loss. Compound this over, lets say an entire region, and your empire will have likely regressed almost to a point of no return. Its why finding natural barriers and stopping points for your conquests is sooooo important. Using mountains and allies as walls is a massive benefit to you as you will be able to push in different places otherwise. You want your empire to expand in a single direction, not inflate like a balloon, trying to expand in all directions at once because inevitably you will find that your empire is stretched out thin, and there are armies attacking from all sides.

For me, the point about using saves is that it gives me options. Unfortunately or not, a 'smooth, safe sailing' gameplay style is almost always successful, but there are a lot of opportunities for crazy hijinks, like a faction-wide blitz or daring enemy territory raid. I don't want to give up on zany schemes entirely, but I also don't want to hang my entire campaign on my latest brainstorm succeeding. Now, there are gamers who do like that - who like to risk everything and play with no net - and that's fine. It's just not me. At the end of the day, as far as I'm concerned, it's a game, and if you're playing in a way that makes you happy, that's kind of the point. If you're doing things that make the game either boring or frustrating, because you're convinced it's the 'right' way to play, my advice is: stop doing that. There are plenty of things in life that are boring or frustrating - you don't have to make more of them for yourself. It's your game. Figure out which way to play makes you happiest, and play that way. - - A big aspect of autoresolve is learning which factions (and in some cases army builds) are darlings of the autoresolve feature. Empire can get away with a lot more auto than say, Skaven. An Ikit Claw-led army fully capable of pulverizing an enemy fortress while losing only a few skavenslaves might very well be autoresolving as a crushing defeat. Autoresolve is deeply wonky - sometimes wonky in your favor, sometimes not. Learn the difference.

Something else I feel people (myself included) tend to do too much is taking ever settlement in front of you. Sure this is usually the best option however it also ends that army’s turn. Instead hold right click to see the movement of your army and try to see if it’s quicker to move around that minor settlement to get to the AI’s major recruitment settlements and take or raze them. Life is MUCH easier when you remove the enemies ability to recruit elite units and leave them stuck with t1 infantry. Obviously if you can, take or raze any settlements on the way but if at all possible take region capitals first before cleaning up the region.
@yaboityler2617

Yeah clearing the province capital is always the priority if you can make it there. The gold reward is higher, it cuts off their best recruitment, and you can start working on your own higher tier buildings eariler. It also means that you defend from a walled position if they try to retake it on their turn.

I strongly disagree with the alliance point. I really like to have at least one or two defensive/military allies. It can keep one of your flanks secure from enemies, or at least create a buffer between you and enemies. If they are neighbours you often end up fighting factions close to you that you want to be at war with anyways. And if it's factions far away you get dragged into a war with it doesn't matter either since they'll not come to your land. Besides that you can recruit their troops which I find really fun and it's also a usefull addition to your recruiting roster and recruiting capabilities. Especially if you are in provinces where you cannot recruit your own elite troops: your allies troops are always available. I also really enjoy the mechanic that you can loan complete armies from your allies. You can get a pretty good army for free for 10 turns and you can do it on a place on the map where it suits you, plus it doesn't matter that much if the army dies.
@djosjowa8433
@djosjowa8433 Жыл бұрын
another thing I like about allies: you can conquer lands in a climate that is unsuitable for you and then sell it to an ally for pretty good money. It's a win win: the territory is still held by a friendly faction, you don't have to spend the effort and money to maintain public order and defend a bad climate settlement and you probably sell it for more money than the settlement would ever give you in profits.

Depending on the faction, that is the most optimal way to do it, IMO. Take your starting province and a 2nd neighboring province and defend them until tier 4 when you can start increasing your hero capacities and getting elite units. Once you have that core setup, pushing out and recruiting other armies is much easier. The next important step is to make sure you finish off your enemies before getting distracted by other objectives. Especially before declaring another war. Sometimes, the AI makes this hard and will gang up on you. This is where garison buildings on your frontline settlements come into play. They can always be sold later, and an economic or military building can be built when the threat is gone. Even a tier 3 minor settlement with the garison building and a newly recruited general can easily defend against most early non legendary lord attacks. Once you get to the point you are capturing large sections of the map. The last important thing to do is. Whatever recruitment building you are using the most is to make sure you build 10 of them to get your global recruitment time decreased. It is incredibly powerful to be across the map fight a tough battle and then be able to recruit fully healthy units in 1 turn from the global recruitment pool. Even in uninhabitable territory, like the chaos wastes where you may get no replenishment. You can combine damaged units and recruit back to a full stack in 1 turn.

In regards to special buildings, read what they do. You wont always need the bonus and some cost 10-15k to build. Money that could give you a new high tier unit or more troops in an area. For some factions resources are a waste to build since they dont trade or have to little trade it doesnt make enough difference. Know your faction, otherwise the right special building at the right time can be extremely powerfull :) In terms of the AI and was I have found much use of all the new command features, building recruitment stuff inside there towns... It sometimes let me bridge weakness by combining another races unit with my own. I had this amazingly unholy mix of undead stuff and greenskins as Azhag. I agree with avoiding military agreements they are not great. :)

My philosophy is to always manually play a predicted loss. Sure, you might lose, but you'll almost certainly inflict more casualties than if you auto resolved, and auto resolve is really bad at factoring magic and ranged, so you might have a necrofex doomstack that it claims is a decisive defeat when it most certainly isnt. Also, auto resolving can lead to more casualties on your side then necessary, so certain character like skarbrand and the beastmen need to manually fight so that they get worn down slower.

@4 Being okay with save-scumming as a newer player is important IMO. I've been there. It can take time to learn how to play out battles and stuff. When a newer player seems close defeat auto resolve and is like "i should be able to pull off a victory" and then pulls of a valiant defeat because 15 different avoidable things went wrong in the battle, or the player just used a terrible formation or whatever. And then the player repeats that 10 times, slowly learning. If they don't save scum, that lost means they are out the game for the next 3 to 8 turns. And they have to repeat that 10 times? All the while, some of their campaigns just fail because of anti-snowball decisions. These are multi-turn mistakes, things like not building towards the right units for their faction - And ending up stuck with ineffective meat shields. Or not building enough economy and being restricted to 1 army when the enemy have 4 full stacks on your border and more on the other side of their empire, or too many wars and not enough diplomacy, or letting Grimgor snowball and then focus you down, and you don't have lightning strike. etc, etc, etc. New players don't know what they are doing. There are many ways for their campaigns to get screwed and for things to slow down to a slog. Save scumming lets the new players just retry some of these things and keeps their campaign going.

#6 In TWWH2 Nearly my entire campaign as Clan Skryre was auto resolve valiant defeat, manual decisive or close victory. My army was clanrats with shields, ratling guns, and jezzails. Clanrats suck at everything except their purpose in life - Meatshields. Ratling guns and jezzails are great damage. This was especially true with settlement battles. It's like the game expected me to actually climb the walls and get inside the settlement. Which I never did. The victory condition was never to take the settlement. It was just to kill everyone from outside the settlement. I only enter the settlement if the enemies are too far away to kill. I also had a similar experience with Oxoatl. My army was chameleon skinks. Literally. I had my legendary lord, which was a chameleon skink, and a skink hero, and 18 chameleon skinks. It's like game expected the range units that can fire while moving and had decent movement speed to enter melee combat with the enemy. In manual battle, that was never the strategy. The strategy was kite. It wasn't even cheesy. Chamaleon skinks can shoot in all directions (they have a circle range instead of a cone range), have decent speed, and can shoot while moving. They are a kiting unit. I'm just using what they have. A lot of my victories was valiant defeat auto resolve against norsca factions, which are melee heavy with few range units. Against my 20 kiting range units. Auto resolve is pretty anti-ranged.

3:10 i personnaly use the save to test thing out, you're not sure if the enemy army will attack you ? save and find out. recently as an example i started an imrik legendary campaign and needed to wipe out nurgle before ghorst or drazoath declared war on me and since imrik have a rough economy start i only had 1 army, saved at a "checkpoint" and continued on, and you know what 2 turns later drazoath was sieging my capital while imrik was sieging ku gath.

>garrisons in every settlement Uh. That's a noob mistake. Garrison settlements that must be attacked by the enemy, are vulnerable to attack, or on the border with an enemy. That's it. If you need to defend your hinterland periodically against hordes or something build an extra army for defense.
@Henskelion
@Henskelion 6 ай бұрын
Armies cost upkeep though, unlike garrisons. Not that you should build garrisons everywhere, but they're definitely useful at border settlements that are going to be potential chokepoints. Capital settlement garrisons are also super useful if you have any of the endgame crises turned on.
@InternetMameluq
@InternetMameluq 6 ай бұрын
@@Henskelion Garrisons almost always do cost money, though. Most factions, especially with ones with settlements worth defending have buildings that will be valuable. Conversely a settlement that is undeveloped isn't a big problem if it's sacked, so a garrison is unneeded. But I agree with everything else you said, I literally thought it was my own post at first.

I dont typically suffer from too many of these problems, however my one friend that likes and enjoys the game does... in fact, I feel like he suffers from at least 9 out of the 10 total issues. The bad thing is, he is not new by very many means. It might just be because we like to play multiplayer with one another but he tends to have issues deciding what to do and where to go. In this case, he plays Tomb Kings, which he sees as a generally easy to play as faction who specializes in generally throwing loads of armies against a brick wall... the problem rises I believe when he auto resolves too many fights, and even sacrifices his high tier starting troops. The reason he says he does this, is cause he doesn't want us to need to wait the whole time (regardless of us telling him contrary to such that we would understand and not care (when we dont want to kind of faf about by controlling the AI army)) though, I feel like such a recap on what you may be doing wrong in multipler against/with friends would need another video in itself to explain that whole mess.

Big like on the save-advice. Id argue that its the best way to learn the game. If you replay the same battle three times to get the best outcome, you have learned how to manage your army and you got immediate feedback about which tactics work and which dont. If you play the same battle just once, you may learn nothing; you won, but was that because your army was just better? Or because you actually played well?

Despite being a new player (less than 40 hours), glad to see I'm doing very few beginner mistakes. The only thing I really need to fix is garrisons. I tend to focus a lot more on economy or unlocking units with defense being an afterthought. (I overly rely on armies to do this) Auto-resolve I think I'm fine, I only use it if it's low casualties with no units lost. Otherwise I manual battle everything cuz I know I'd do a lot better than auto-resolve.

Saving games is helpful and all... but sometimes the most fun comes from taking heavy losses and then trying to recover.
@Tucher97
@Tucher97 Жыл бұрын
So here is a thing when it comes to whethering to auto result or manually right, take this question into consideration if you have units that regenerate and/or able to recover during battle lets say Norsca skin wolves and Lizardman rejuvenation crystal, yes, you maybe losing a few in that regiment but it does not mean said regiment will enter the battle at full health. Another, pay attention to your unit card, what do I mean by that? Simple, sometimes your Ork ard boiz who are bigga and arda may seem like solid high end infantry, they also antilarge. Another example, just because your Norsca hunters armed with javelins maybe Anti-large, it does not mean your skinks with javelins are anti large. Now you may say "well all range units are anti large" and yes that is true, but are those gunners anti large when they are out of ammo, in melee? No.

If anything, the more experienced a player is, the less likely they would be to use save scumming as they shouldn't be making the kinds of mistakes they need to recover from and don't need the benefit of learning from trial and error like noobs do.

Most of the time defensive and millitary alliances are a good thing because it allows outpost building withing allied cities and war co-ordination which can be useful if you don't have any armies in that area. Also unless you make a millitary alliance with a weaker faction (which admittedly is a really bad idea) the ai absolutely WILL do a lot in the war. So new players, ignore 3, it isn't true.

Standardize your turns : you have limited ressources, be it gold or movement range, and you NEED to optimize it ! Nobody wants to find out they can't upgrade their settlement because they tried (and failed) an assassination just before that... That boils down to basic concepts, no need to overthink it. Move you heroes before your armies, wait to have finished this turn's battles before building stuff, make sure the gold you spend hiring and recuiting doesn't lock you out of building, and vice versa,... You don't have to lock yourself into such scheme either, maybe you REEAALLLLY want to make this landmark, even if this means no hero action this turn ;7

You don’t have to play every manual battle that you think you could win. I was playing as Grom and I was fighting the dwarfs, and I would auto resolve every single fight even if I thought I could manually win because fuck fighting dwarfs. I played one manual battle where the dwarf warriors got knocked down to 1 single dwarf and 4 health but they still fought. Dwarfs have to be completely decimated to the last unit standing and I refuse to do that, especially when the last man standing could be a single irondrake who just refuses to give up.

That drawing analogy deleted your credibility for making the point of save scumming. Its a solo PvE game do whatever you want to have fun, just tell people that. Do not try to invalidate the players who enjoy perma-death. I don't alt-f4 out of the long dark when a bear attacks me because I will lose 200 hours on a save, the point is that it is an achievement and by design alot of difficulty is lost when save scumming. Living with your decisions is what makes games like Rimworld an amazing game for creating stories of triumph over difficult odds.

Disagree about save scumming. You don't need a perfect campaign with no losses. Often when you save scum you spend ages on a battle that didn't matter as much as you thought it did. Personally I give myself 1 redo for any battle. The objective isn't to win games, it's to have a story arc. And save scumming wrecks a story.

Some people are more into the empire building part, and playing every battle takes a lot of time. I have a friend that's more like you, where the campaign is just the excuse to get to the next battle. I guess it's just preference. Although it is true that total war leaves a lot to be desired in the empire building part, specially if you compare it with any paradox game. Then again, Total War isn't a grand strategy title, so it's understandable.

Haven't watched the whole video yet, but number 10 has alot of caveats..... Depending on your faction and what you want to buy soon or eventually, saving the right amount of money can be huge. I try to keep at least 500-800 in bank early game and 300 upkeep unless there's an emergency. Also, save scummming is the dumbest term I've heard, along with the calling everyone a s.j.w. era. Games glitch and f--- up sometimes. The game gets weird cheats sometimes. Our only weapon against this is saving and reloading saves. Lol.
