As someone who used to play tabletop WH, it's crazy to think that Skaven aren't balanced out by the randomness to their mechanics/roster/lore that is present in the army books. Oh, your doomclaw went bonkers and wheeled into your clan rats because you rolled a 1? Woops... Without the quirky (but somehow fun and lore appropriate) balancing measures, they are just OP.

Snikitch is good. Thrott is good. Ikit is good. I feel like it's even. 3 good, 3 okay. Tretch kinda sucks but the other 2 are okay. And the skaven have so many tools and units that are just bonkers that with the right army comps the lord half the time doesn't even matter. But my favorite l, hands down is Ikit.

That could be done with a single patch. For example by giving a random chance to change their controls to reverse. Tell them to turn left, 15% chance they go right. Order to charge ahead. They make 180 and charge your line.

Likewise the reliability of the Dawi’s tech doesn’t stand out either. Their tech is held back by their stubborn refusal to innovate but as a result the old tested and true designs aren’t going to go haywire or misfire etc.

While boring, I will say the ABSENCE of a mechanic makes Daniel a little bit better, which is of course the lack of his need to appease the various gods to field an army of their units. He can use whatever he wants, and often gets bonuses just for free. It feels like the gods are courting you and I think that’s a lot of fun, and I hope that’s how they improve on the faction and justify excluding Belakor from it.

I think people refuse to see that sometimes a simplistic power fantasy is what some people want to play rather than a more intricate faction. If you want Demons of Chaos with more mechanics, that's basically what WoC is post rework.

Your faction can teleport ambush, vanguard deploy everyone with nurgle plag and global recruit high rank units in a single turn. "Oh, but he is bad because he cant duel tyrion or valkya."

I just think it's a drag. You start at the very top of the map and you can only expand left or right at first. Warriors of chaos are very strong on your right so you'll probably ally with them or you can try to subjugate them which isn't very easy. You're basically in the middle of nowhere with no enemies to fight unless you want a hard time

​@Diogo Vieira To be fair, once you fully upgrade him you SHOULD be able to go toe to toe with most top tier lords. The upgrade system (the main draw) is useless if you still struggle to be powerful. The faction is designed around your boy being his best self which is pointless if he doesn't become the best.

To be fair queek is faction that boffs the frontline, and while he is more melee it doesn't remove the mechanics the other factions have brought into his armies, which makes his faction far more beginner-friendly in my opinion. It is a tougher area for all the variety of enemies, but he fits in there with his focuses of enemies being greenskins and dwarfs.

Slaanesh is one of the most inventive race. It's the only race who can win the game using mostly a completely different way to win than all the other races. This is Total War, and yet, Slaanesh has the extreme luxury of being the only race which can win without waging much war. It's all about the agents invasion and vassalizing. At least it works awesomely in lower difficulties. Maybe it's not the same feeling at all in harder difficulties, and that would explain the rating here. In any case, with how I play, it works perfecly and is super unique, corrupting half the map instead of conquering it like all the others is super original and so extatic.

Im super new to RTS games and Warhammer on top and so far Im super impressed by the amount of races and the unique ideas with most of them. Customizing your Daemon based on which gods you earn favors with, destroying and pillaging and then leaving the ruins to dust with Skarbrand or becoming the Oppenheimer of Warhammer with the Skaven are such fun and original things that even if any of the races becomes my least favorite or personally not the best, I'll find a way to enjoy them all.

To be honest, I find the Vampire Counts ranking rather inaccurate. They can expand easily and have a massive list of units to choose from. Meat shields, crazy monsters, and damn good lords and heroes. Late game, they tend to dominate as some of the strongest factions from my experience. I do disagree with the original comment of this thread for two reasons. 1. Ogre artillery hits like a fucking truck. 2. They make most cavalry virtually useless against 90% of their infantry. If anti-infantry cavalry try for ogres, they usually get stuck and mowed down.

@delusional6857 1. Two words, Fly units. Dark Elves are one of the most aggressive factions when it comes to units and their flying units embodies this. Even if we were to ignore them, their Witch Elves can just as well get around to the back lines and take them out 2. Black Guards are anti large and are surprisingly good against them plus the sea creature thing is also pretty darn powerful as well The Dark Elves and The Ogre Kingdom are my favorite factions in the game(along with the beastmen, greenskins and Norsca) and trust me. Dark Elves even before their buff was stronger then the Ogre Kingdom

I played Norsca recently and TBH you did them pretty dirty haha. I loved how quickly I became a monster in my campaign; they snowball early very easily and then you get so many fun quest battles that most factions only have one or two of. The hunts are so much fun and I think they're worth being in the middle just for those!

Brettonia is hard to get the ball rolling but once you get the economy going and unlock grail knights nothing can stop you especially with the new update. Doing a louen campaign atm and full stack of grail guardians and hippogriph knights destroy multiple stacks of anything.

I just did a chaos campaign with Archaon and I would stack aspiring champions and at one point I walked through a stack of 9 armies in one battle, and I barely took any casualties.

I remember playing as the dwarfs in warhammer 2 for the first time the scaven conquered basically the entire southern part of the map. They would not stop ambushing my army’s and dwarfs don’t do well in an ambush. So I gave up in disgust and switched to the vampires. The scaven don’t like fell bats or Vargheist’s 😎 also “what’s that? you have ambushed me. Why thank you for starting so close to me “.

I guess if you play dwarves or empire and you know what you are doing, both can be incredibly powerful. That being said, i dunno how either can be better than high elves, when both three of their factions have a very defensible position and can confederate with relative ease. Its almost too easy to have Tyrion, Eltharion and Alarielle confederated as High Elves.

@@lk5388 High elves have very weak siege and are hard carried by the sisters tbh boring too. Dark elves are in bad starting positions but are aleast fun. Dwarves are stupid strong and have very few bad units and are the best faction to bring a new player to. Empire has some of the best siege in the game. Both of them also have more variety of foes, only a few dark elf factions are fun to play.

Rev crystal bastilodons alone make lizardmen top 5. You need at least 2 in every army they are just so essential and so powerful. Lord Kroak's Deliverance of Itza III is also one of my favourite spells in the game. In a campaign as Kroq-Gar I was hiring level 49 heroes by the end of the game and my cap was in the 30s. Super powerful and fun armies. Is their Geomantic web a boring mechanic? Absolutely! But stomping opponents to death with giant dinosaurs just scratches that primitive itch in my brain.

I love so many factions. My ranking also changes all the time. At the moment I just love the Warriors of chaos... Valkya, Archeon etc Also, pretty much on the same level is Cathay. Then I put Vampire Coast, Dark Elves, Vampires, Kislev - Kata specifically and N'kari.

After 3.1 Dark Elves slaves got a massive boost. Charfs should hide in shame for how good DE is with "volunteer" workers. ATM this video come 6h ago while update like a day or more. Probably Colonel didn't have time to check things. Dark Elves slaves are so OP i didn't even think about saving them, not only i have positive income of "workers", but any larger battle will give me slaves for at least 10 turns.

Well basically Norsca are a part of warriors of chaos, its custom. They did a good job introducing custom races like norsca and vampire coast, but you could basically integrate the whole norscan roster together with warriors of chaos and still be lore accurate.

CATHAY turn 50-70 very hard and you have entire Cathay under you and can spam armies because you can just keep them in the great bastion with its 75% upkeep reduction bonus. They are way better then the Empire or Kislev. Terracotta sentinels are one of the most cost efficient large units loosing pretty much only too arachnarok spiders not even speaking about celestial crossbows which are one of the best ranged units in the game. and they have good garrisons which empire does not, nor kislev. Great bastion is super op mechanic for leveling your charachters in turn 100 you can have at least 6 lvl 50 lords. And for the Emperors grace Nurgle should be the last spot.

50+ is late game nearly all factions spike around that time and it still doesn’t make up for Cathay’s roster being boring as sh!t not to mention harmony is probably if not the most tedious mechanic in the game.

The beastman are literly the strongest faction in game, by a mile and a half, 1: they get stronger with more battles, so harder difficulty jsut buffs them 2. They can win the game and burn half the world by turn 60 3. There encampments are hidden making them near impossible to destroy

Especially as Isabella’s Sylvania - I can have almost all of the old world with insane t4-t5 unit and hero stacks by like turn 20, by vamp spamming and battle sites. They also convert provinces to 100 corruption in like 2 turns.

Insane you don't even need to build military buildings. And you have an answer for everything. Vampire lords are strong as hell and heroes too. Insane healing. Not so great economy but when the bulk of your army are easily replaced doesn't matter. VC easily top 5.

I’ve played Total War since Rome 1, including the whole Warhammer series. I bought all the DLC for WH1 and 3-4 pieces for WH2 (e.g. I did get Tomb Kings, but not Vampire Coast). The nickel-and-diming definitely started to wear on me, but I haven’t been tuned in to the shitshow at all in the past year. I passed on WH3 at launch and I haven’t touched any of the saga games, so no Pharaoh. So, I guess I was on a Total War hiatus for a couple years there, but purely out of circumstance and not because I was actively involved in drama. Anyway, I finally grabbed WH3 like 5 months ago when there was a big sale, and I’m just now getting around to consider playing it. So I’m watching a few videos to get input on what faction I want to play first. I got to your top 3 and they’re all interesting and cool. I’m not spending $25 on Chaos Dwarfs before even playing my first campaign. That leaves Grom and Ikit, and I’m like, “I better go check if those are DLC lords/factions.” You can tell where this is going, they both are and I have neither. And I’m just like… could there be a more perfect encapsulation of what’s going on with CA and Total War right now. I just want to play the fucking game and try a faction that I saw looked cool in a video. 🤦‍♂️

Daniel at 19 seems extremely lenient, considering how slowly he gains access to those demon units and what little mechanics they provide. He essentially carries the campaign for the first dozen turns or so.

Beastmen can also buy items from the dread shop, meaning that you can buy good items and combine them into powerful items early on. Troll hide, blue armor, gives strait up .2% regen for any lord or hero as an example

Ironically, in my Dark Elf campaign, the Norsca are nearly all that’s left besides the Lizardmen and the Chaos Dwarves. They own everything to the North. No Empire, High Elves, Vampire Counts, or other Dark Elves left.

Nakai is probably my favorite campaign in the game. His army is strong which is nice, but I like that the horde and vassal mechanics he gets just means all I have to focus on is having a good time purging the map of the more evil factions

Ogres should have a meat mechanic that works like Skarbrand blood host. You can use it in a pinch to get 25% extra movement range after the battle. Or use meat to fill your movement bar before end turn. Bretonnia need a hedge knight Lord so they have a way of getting trophies for killing large monsters. Specific monster trophies can be used to buy banners or turn limited buffs for your army. That would be a lot of fun. Good for Alberic especially. Norsca need Fimir legendary Lord if there is one. Dark Elves need a mechanic that gives them a massive buff to slave output when they take over high elf territory. Bum rush the high elves then take over the world.

The meat mechanic is so badly implemented smh Ogres are supposed to be op, but with high upkeep to allude to their mercenary roots... then you have a high comsuption of meat by Ogre troops, however you can eat the Gnoblars unit to replenish the meat... but the Gnoblars are the work force (the Bretonnia peasants), so I think a modder needs to figure it out how to mix the meat system with the peasantry system. Drunk Flamingo did made a mod were was possible to eat Gnoblars, but that's it, there was nothing else beyond that

I have to strongly disagree on Bretonnia, the lack of supply lines even when other factions get it at 4% is such a massive bonus. They also get spell casting lords which again is a massive bonus over factions that don't. They also have a very effective army, the peasant economy can be ignored if you go industrial and even then they have so much more money then other factions.

The ONLY thing that keeps Imryk from being top 3 is probably just his location. Late game I don't think any other lord can really touch him and he'll literally steamroll with a doomstack army. The limitation is that there are a lot of cheap army enemies around him, so you end up playing a lot of whack-a-mole for a long while. Get an alliance with dwarves and add Iron Drakes to his roster and it's flat-out sick what he and his army can do given that the enemy is all going to be flammable.

Been trying to start a Vampire campaign (Mannfred) recently but even on standard difficulty its just impossible. Within the first 5 rounds at least three neighbour factions declare war for no reason and immediately send full stacks at me which I cant beat by any chance. The early units you have, skellies etc, have absolutely no skills and even though I can replenish my armies kinda fast after a battle the enemies, including non-undead factions do it at the same speed. When I send out a hero to discover the map pretty much each new faction I find declares war. The dunekings in the north kill the other vampire faction with one single battle and take my first city one round later with a full army. When I attack them with my faction leader I lose so many troops that I barely do any damage to them. Meanwhile the empire in the west attacks me as well with a full stack full of armored knights which beat me affordlessly even on vampire corrupted territory. It pretty much goes like this: full stack enemy attacks - I lose because only weak units - enemy still has full stack - next city lost - enemy keeps marching - capital lost - end of campaign.

Skaven are still ok in the early game just buy 4 plagueclaw catapults. They are your key early on and can hold their own quite long allowing you to focus on sorting out your economy and development.

There is a mod that turns the Tomb Kings into an A-tier faction. With rune like mechanics. They've always been a favourite of mine because I like the idea of a morally grey army of the dead. Khalida much prefers killing vampires to killing the living.

I remember in a vampire count playthrough I had one unit of about 13 skeletons that were literally the ONLY unit that survived the first 10 turns in my army from the start, so I called that specific unit the damned 13th and they were the mascot of my army... Until Franz completely annihilated them from existence with two steam tanks, some cav charges, and quite a bit of clashing with swordsmen.

Also, Imrik is still the strongest LL in the game at max level. He is literally unkillable after a certain point. He doesn't even need late game units In his army. He will kill any other LL so fast it's basically like they weren't in the battle.

My favorite is Beastmen for one simple reason: they make it worthwhile to use heroes as agents instead of units. Heroes in general are OP units, yes, but their agent actions are still powerful held back by the cost to use them - a cost that Beastmen can ignore. No upkeep on heroes, a tech that gives -50% hero action cost, an LL skill (not faction trait, so any Beastmen faction can get it once they confed the right guy) that reduces bray-shaman action cost by 25%, and gorebulls having a level 10 skill that gives -25% action cost means that both bray-shamans and gorebulls can have free hero actions on top of their 0 upkeep. A couple shamans spamming Steal Technology each time you unlock a new branch of your tech tree lets you get all those juicy tech boosts significantly faster, and they can spend the rest of the time keeping agents wounded and keeping the enemy from moving their armies properly. Gorebulls, on the other hand, can just escort your armies as essentially a bonus unit that deals a ton of damage to SOMETHING each turn - whether shredding an army, perforating a garrison, or acting as a potentially more permanent agent removal with their Assassinate action, there's little reason not to have one ensuring each army and settlement is a nightmare and a half to engage in force.

Might be a tad biased but i don't agree on slaanesh, at least on the part about their seductive influence mechanic being a gimmick, being able to subjugate a really strong faction means you get a massive income and a meat shield, meaning you don't have to care about defending that area. And since n'kari gets a massive buff to his vassal income it's very viable to rely on vassals for income

You do that with the ALT key. Select your units, hold ALT and left click drag to move them around, and they'll keep their relative position and formation. If you hold CTRL as well you can adjust their orientation as well but make sure to stop pressing CTRL before you issue your order or else they'll run/walk (the opposite of your default). Another protip is that you can use the arrow keys to make your units move a small amount in any of the 4 directions.

A weakness of the skaven seems to be the autoresolve. Apearantly the AI underestimates how strong masses of cheap troups are. So as long as your army has a lot of clanrats or slaves you have to fight all the battles yourself. Wich is okay for my but should be mentioned.

I'd love it if the ogre kingdoms got a good boost and got their best units. I'd love to see the bruiser as a melee hero varriant and maybe a maneater captain as a customizable lord variant. Thunder tusks and yeethees would be awesome and a new legendary lord like golflag maneater would be awesome too. I'm convinced Bragg the gutsman would be a better legendary hero than a lord so I'd settle for that. Some units from gnoblar country would be cool too.

Norsca honestly need a rework and a full, large roster update. Just a rework won't cut it. They need at least 2 new legendary lords, 2 or 3 new generic lords, more heroes including legendary ones, a full mechanic update, new unit variants, more Fimir units (and maybe a Meargh lord or LL) and Throgg needs access to every other troll variant in the game (maybe even some new ones, like boulder throwers). The faction is so cool but is one fifth the size it should be.

Gonna have to agree with Skaven at #1, but definitely not because of Ikit Claw. Yeah, he's strong. Yeah, his faction mechanic is op. But rattling gunners function perfectly well without infinite ammo. The real rat at the top of the food chain is Deathmaster Snikch. His recruit cost increase is a non factor after a small time and the positives... well. First of all, not having to worry about loyalty is already so good. But the shadow deals are just busted and the ability to delete any faction every 100 turns (basically twice in any decently long campaign) is the single most broken thing ever.

Yep, I noticed the insta buildings. The major advantage of slavery is just that, weird how long it took for CA to implement this mechanic (that should be a thing in every TW, "historical" or not). I had a really interesting Morathi campaign, mods that added the "seduce" mechanic from Slaanesh (but that's it, for her to not be too overpowered)... by manipulating the dark elves neighbors and use slaves to build quickly in the jungle, it was cool

I just started a campaign as Hellebron to see the fixes to her mechanic as well as the new slave updates and I think the biggest struggle is their lack of magical damage early on now that it’s such a necessity vs demons, and starting next to Valkia makes you have to really kiss her ass and pray she focuses someone else until you can build up.

Hellebron and her starting death hag were able to dump Valkia without trouble. The rest of her army gets slaughtered by missiles. I usually had her and her death hag on Blood Cauldrons before beating up Valkia.

Wood Elves are way too low. Easily top 5. Id also easily put High elves above Kislev and the Empire. And I do feel you let Ikit carry the skaven a bit much. But i also have a grudge against them bigger then any Dawi. Legit forgot they were a playable race till halfway through. They will always be the enemy to me.

Thrott was my most broken playthrough ever. I had 20 mutations on every unit in his army. Nothing could beat him. It was absolute insanity. Ever have a Hell pit abomination that has increased hp regen, fire aura, stalk, magical damage, an ability to cripple armour by 40 points for 30 seconds, call lightning x3 times, increased speed and a plethora of other things? Yeah, I had that shit with throt. On one hellpit...he's broken beyond belief late game.
