I love how we all can have different opinions, yet still be friends in the watch world. I love integrated bracelet watches (and own 3). I think roman numerals on watch dials look classy. Aaaaand I own several homages by Pagani Design and their subsidiaries. I enjoyed watching this video, it's so nice to see a KZbinr having their own opinion and being 100% unbiased, instead of just going with the flow to gain views and followers! 👏

I used to 100% agree with the male end links - but after owning the Seiko 62mas re-issue, which is already quite long at 48mm lug to lug, I did dread it's male end links - until I tried it on, and also tried swapping for a rubber strap. On a rubber strap, the watch starkly drops down, makes the watch not only look taller and bulky, but makes the lug to lug actually look too big on my small 6.5 inch wrist. Whereas on the bracelet with its male end links, it rounds out the watches profile so it looks uniform on the wrist, especially as the end links curve down around the wrist. Just goes to show you have to try on a watch before knowing if you like it. It also helps that the 62-mas re-issues not only have a hardened steel case, but also a hardened steel brushed bracelet. For anyone with small wrists: don't rule out +40mm dive watches, and don't rule out male end links!

I have the Steeldive homage (or knockoff, if you prefer) of the Seiko 6105 "Captain Willard"; it's a good watch, keeps good time and quite honestly, represents excellent value for money. Which leads to the very question you asked: why can't Seiko offer similarly well-made products for less? I've noticed over the last few years that Seiko seems to be creeping into the luxury watch market segment, and in my honest opinion, that's a mistake (they've already got Grand Seiko, after all). Offer consumers great value for money, like Steeldive and the other "homage" watchmakers you mentioned, and Seiko would do even more business than they already do.

Imagine a Seiko at a reasonable price with sapphire ( the sarb's long gone) & an adjustable clasp that San Martin have recently produced? Of course, a rhetorical question.

Seiko is very overrated in my view. Seiko has horrendous quality control and just generally bad quality watches, and they are usually ugly, it's only their lume and famous heritage that keeps the brand going.

I bought a steeldive... The "great wave" dial. Excellent lume, bezel is great, overall I love what the watch could have been... However they put the 6 o'clock indice so crooked it's laughable. The date quick change function also broke within a week. But it's a nice paperweight now. 👍

Great video as always Russ! I have to agree with you on most of the things you talk about, the only thing I’d add to homages is that it can also give you a feel for a style of watch and what suits you. Before I bought my Tudor BB I wore the homage from San Martin and it was thanks to that I decided to save up and by the real thing. Also the wife may have a point with the gold G Shock ahaha look the full metal but silver or black for me! 😂

Well I definitely see your point but let me just say one thing about the doxa. The doxa 300t or 1500t don't really give you anyting that impressive other than their Heritage. Their movements are pretty much subpar ETA movements and the finishing on the watch is nothing to be jumping up about. So when you have a brand like seestern that makes the same watch well kind of the same for you know 20th of the price it's more enticing to me. At $2,400 from the doxa, youre not really getting much out of it other then the name, sooooo. There you go

I deeply dislike the fact that the vast majority of dials with Roman Numerals don’t get the 4 correct. I have sold some otherwise fantastic watches because of this. It’s also made me not even look at other watches. If the manufacturer can get the 6 correct, there in no reason to screw up the 4

About casio homage watches, I actually consume skmei or sanda watches because I live in Brazil, and I don't know, you know, but the prices of watches here in the country are extremely expensive. An example you cited was G-Shock it was the DW-5600, that this watch in Brazil costs on average, 72 dollars, and his homage from skmei costs 10 dollars. And you know what the worst part is, that if we take that value and convert it, the original G-Shock will cost 350 reais and the skmei for 50 reais, and the minimum wage in Brazil is 1340 reais, therefore, it ends up becoming an unfeasible to buy these original watches. I myself am a person who buys homage watches, precisely because I live in the conditions that Brazil imposes on us, but I am sure that in the future, everything will improve.

I agree big time on the homages. They're fantastic watches by every metric but I just can't support a brand who's whole schtick is that they shamelessly copy every popular design out there and put their logo on it. Sometimes it's even to my own detriment. They have an Alaska Project Speedmaster homage that isn't even a direct 1:1 clone like many of their watches, and it's cheaper than the Mission to Mars MoonSwatch while offering stainless steel and sapphire instead of "Bioceramic" (plastic) but I still can't bring myself to buy one. I'd rather pay more for a worse watch knowing it's sanctioned by the brand and not a knock-off. I just can't get myself into the head space to feel good wearing a watch that says 'Pagani Design' on the dial knowing what they do.

I'm not a lover of GMT watches, I just don't see the point, I can usually work out any time difference in my head quickly enough. The thing about casio is that they have a very distinct aesthetic which is really not for everyone. The brand casio is also very associated with inexpensive watches, as well as calculators etc. This is perfectly fine, but there's a LOT of people that don't want a watch that screams affordability. Doubly so if it's basically the watch they wore in school in the 90s. I'd say they are very over-recommended and possibly overhyped at the entry level for these reasons. If you like the aesthetic, fine, it's a great choice in terms of reliability and practicality, but there's a reason people are mostly buying fashion oriented watches or 'mall watches' at the low end and it's because they are perceived as much classier by the average person off the street, and truthfully have much more diverse aesthetics even if they are generally worse quality and value.
@jimmyw7530
@jimmyw7530 Жыл бұрын
@@JudoP_slinging indeed. I think that if Casio took on the classy design aesthetic, or even teamed up with a fashion brand they could really appeal to an audience much wider than they already have. They could be even more legendary than they already are now!

@MultiBamBamBamBam what? You gotta under stand that 1200 bucks is not a attainable price especially for something as shallow as a watch, "the real thing" is more than 12 times the price at a similar quality. Point is granted with fasios but not in this case

@MultiBamBamBamBam well too bad you cant tell noone what to do with their money. Point stands, similar quality at a fraction of the price is very much what any buyer, no matter economic status, will find appealing. @@ClaudiaARocha For me the Fasio was the one thing I disagreed with him on. I wouldn't buy the g-shock but the F91w is pretty much the generic digital watch form factor at this point. Several brands e.g. Timex make more expensive watches that are arguably homages. And there are all kinds of interesting customizations to the LCD screen and watch surround...I don't think the authentic-ness is really a factor for this kind of watch.

Homage watches are a great way to get discontinued/vintage designs with modern reliability and reasonable prices. They also offer additional colorways a lot of the time. In these ways, they're offering a service/product that you literally can't get "for real" a lot of the time. I bought a San Martin homage of a Helm Vanuatu for about as much as a real Helm Vanuatu would cost, because I liked their unique colorway and upgraded movement. I think getting the watch you want is ultimately what it's all about.

Never understood the hate for homage watches. In order to be competitive in all markets, you take what worked for someone else, make some slight (sometimes better sometimes worse) differences, try to cut the cost as much as possible to make as much money as possible with all demographics and boom. Yeah it feels cheeky as hell when it’s a blatant copy but if it wasn’t selling so well they wouldn’t be selling it. Consumers have all the power when it comes to something taking off or being phased out. So can we really say these companies are at fault when we are the ones ultimately deciding what sells and what doesn’t.

Slight adjustments are how every watch has been made over the years. I don’t like watch that are made to look like another watch . It’s the easiest (lowest hanging fruit) business model that for some reason has been allowed to go on ???? Of course it’s us watch buyers who determine what sells and what doesn’t. It’s “what can we make that guarantees us the quickest return with not a lot of thought . It’s not for me. Plus!!!! Once again there is no HATE??????
@larrylacostjr.2075
@larrylacostjr.2075 Жыл бұрын
Regarding your 10th point, I doubt anything will change. And, competition is not necessarily a bad thing. Adjusted for inflation, when the quartz crisis came to be, say in 1970, are the mechanicals and automatics less or more expensive? If you say more expensive, you’re right based cheaper alternatives that providers better accuracy and shock resistance. The bills at Rolex, Omega, etc keep coming in and if you’re selling less watches, what are you going to do with the price? It increases. My Omega Seamaster automatic back in 1996 era sold for just over $2,000. You can get one of the same model, used, for the exact same price today. Thinking about it, adjusted for inflation, that’s a loss on my watch. However, can I buy a brand new Omega Seamaster for $2,000 or one priced adjusted for inflation? NO! $6,000 to $8,000. By the way, my Seamaster movement operates just fine as it’s been maintained by Omega over the years… I don’t need an 8000 series movement just to tell time and date. So what happened that caused this? The overhead of spokespersons? Brand name? Maybe… but less competition at the time, yes. In addition, when many Swiss watchmakers went out of business during these crises, less competition meant the survivors could also do what?… increase their price. Adding Chinese homages, and some good ones at that, means that Swiss watchmakers have to innovate and compete better instead of resting on their laurels. OR, if you’re Rolex, another reaction to do is buy up the watch community so that you have control on sales, warranties and sales on other competing Swiss watches (like Rolex did by buying Bucherer 4 days ago). Getting back to #10, if you want to be upset with this; then be upset with your own loved watch company; Seiko. They are the ones who are selling the NH34, NH35, NH36, NH38 to other companies. And they are the ones who really don’t care what you think when they’re selling these movements by the hundreds of thousands making more money than you can imagine. So what’s the end game, it’s something you won’t be able to avoid, but it’s something to respect… this is not China’s first rodeo when it comes to copying things. And there’s nothing we can do about it. The demand for expensive looking watches that run and look very well is great… and they know it! Time for the big boys in Switzerland to get off their chairs and start innovating to the next level for consumers instead of taking a back seat with watches that are used to tell the time. If not, the Chinese will and will leave the Swiss companies in the dust. It’s only a matter of time… (pun intended)…

Romans look perfect on Cartier tanks, not so much on round watches. I like California dials - funky and different. Male end links work well on 36mm watches (eg. Rolex Explorer and Oyster Perpetual). They add wrist presence to a smaller case size. Agree on Casio clones and luxury divers with bad bezels, they are ridiculous. I'm not a fan of integrated bracelet watches, but the PRX represents excellent value in that segment. Agree on the seconds hand and displaying ugly movements. Cheers!

Integrated bracelets are great as long as they have a push button release so you can switch from bracelet to rubber to leather. I prefer those to watches that have a gap once you remove the bracelet and swap in a leather strap. The integrated look has a nicer finished look. They also avoid that unsightly taper of a wide Maxi cases with a skinny looking shoe string strap. An integrated case allows the strap to have a more graduated taper.

I have no problem with homages of discontinued models from brands most people would never be able to afford. I would rather buy a San Martin than a SEIKO 5 any day. Much better value proposition. As for G-Shocks, they are God Tier and many companies like Armitron and Skmei are actively cloning current models. I don't like this at all. In fairness, Armitron does have its own designs, too. As for the gold Square, I own the gold and silver one. I am an enthusiast and collector of Casios, but I cannot help but observe that Skmei's homages have a reason for being. In less developed countries, the price difference between a Skmei and a Casio is really significant - we're talking double or triple the price - so, even though in Europe or the US it's kind of stupid to buy a Skmei, in the rest of the world , there is a strong economic case for this.
@jonathanstamp

Absolutely correct - everything is relative. To a multimillionaire the difference between a Tudor and a Rolex is negligible

After all this progress of humanity,labour, technological breakthroughs and so many years of hard work of almost every person,even in more financialy troubled nations,for progress sake, the average individual should have been able to at least get one to two authentic original Rolex during their lifetime.....For rugged use only the high end Casio ones that cost over 800$...still, in the end of the day it remains a really cheap watch...800$ to 1000$ shouldnt have been much for no individual at this time...Lower class copycats shouldnt exist.Give options to people for a higher grade life...Not always make them settle for less...🎉

In defense of Skmei, at least in Asia, they are $5 to $10 worth. For $20 or less, you can have a mechanical automatic watch, which only good for beginner watchmakers to learn to dismantle the movement, honestly the accuracy is awful for mechanical watches. Skmeis are gateway drug for a lot of people starting a watch collection.

Many homage Watches continue to keep getting better and better, and the prices are still about the same. Also, many use Japanese automatic movements that are reliable and accurate. I own a vintage Rolex submariner, but I also have an Invicta, pro diver, and a Pagani design moonwatch homage. They look great, have Japanese movements, and I enjoy wearing them. Total cost for both was under $200 !

Why people buy SKMEI than Casios? Because if you're not aware we do have Third World Countries. Trust me, even Casio is pricey. With high crime rates, robbery and manual labor. We wouldn't spend much if all we want is a watch that we can beat and walk around without sacrificing our pockets.

Homage watches from Ali for me are best way to see if that style of watch fits me so one day i can buy real thing, if not just sell is for same price or couple euros loss rather than getting seiko spb willard reissue for example and eat 400euro loss if i don't like it. Also you can fiddle with regulations and modding so there is a place for these things im my book.

I'm a diehard Omega guy, but I'm not a fanatic. That James Bond diver looks the business, but it's very disappointing, & I simply do not like the Diver 300s. I have a 1st gen Planet Ocean and a caliber 8900 Aqua Terra. I love the style and attitude of them. I have Hamilton, Casio, Lorus, and microbrands like Scurfa and Torgoen. I don't even bag on Swatch. The only brands I openly and actively disdain is wrist cancer trash like Invicta, Hublot, & Sam's Club fashion garbage. Personally, I'm not putting a plastic digital thing on my wrist, except my vintage 1990 Lorus that cost $10 new.
